If you love Atelier games you will like this. Its origin on Switch is clearly apparent, it's pretty average looking. The people in the towns just stand around, no animation so it feels like a ghost town. The characters are twee and a bit naff, proc gen dungeons make me a bit sad to be honest. The dialog is pretty much replaceable by predictable 'uplifting positive' ChatGPT dialog. None of the characters really have any edge to their character except maybe El. One thing that didn't feel right was all the characters from other Atelier games, it jarred. Just have characters from the local world. It feels like fan ficion? The combat is fine, never understood why debuffs sometimes disappeared and sometimes didn't, some kind of overwriting system that I couldn't be arsed to find out about The crafting is meh, the gift colour system is a bit aggravating and forces you to farm proc gen dungeons for random catalysts which was so tedious I just did without. One thing really annoyed me was that you couldn't finish getting the town completely regenerated before you were in the last hour of the game in the final dungeon. Also, crafting is pretty much neutered till then so there's a HUGE jump in crafting power in the last hour or two of the game. Badly balanced imho, though I understand why they did it. So yeah thumbs up for Atelier fans, but meh
It's worth the purchase, full stop. Loved it from start to finish, and now I'm doing NG+ on Legendary. Notes for Atelier series fans looking for a more specific review: It was really fun, but the amount of optional conversations with all the characters from past games really wore me out by the end. They're pretty much all the same in structure. "Oh, we have something in common, so we're talking about it." By the end of the game you're like "I already know you two have something in common. I don't need to hear about it." But you have to hear about it, because some skill tree unlocks are tied to a character's story progression. Really just a minor criticism, and one that can be solved by skipping the conversation entirely with a button press. Game balance is *much* better than Yumia. I started NG+ on Legendary and enemies are still difficult even though I'm using my maxed out gear from my first save. Little annoyed at Resna and Valeria being optional $18 DLC, but this is pretty normal of Koei Tecmo by now. I have a negative review on my account criticizing this as far back as Lydie and Suelle. It's just what they do now: scrape off characters that would've normally been playable to sell them to you as DLC. Hate that. Don't want to support it. But TLDR; I enjoyed my time with this game, and I'm going to finish NG+ too. A very good entry to the series. EDIT (because I don't know how I forgot something this major): IT RUNS ON UNITY. You DO NOT need the Atelier fix patch to run this well on a Steam Deck. HUGE props for this.
This is the second Atelier game I've played after Yumia and I enjoyed it a lot! Gameplay is smooth, it just feels right whether in combat, exploration, or alchemy. The graphics, especially character models and animations, are great. Rias and Slade were excellent as dual protagonists, and the story unfolds well focusing on their relationship, with a nice twist or two and a satisfying payoff in the end. If you're wondering if Rias and Slade's relationship is romantic, it is, and that's a good thing. The majority of the cast, including the other party members, are crossovers from other Atelier games, and they fit well in the narrative rather than feeling like cheap cameos. Raze was my favorite of them. Rely on him against the final boss! I highly recommend this for everyone.
Finished this game a few hours ago, and I have to say, it was a great game. I was a little worried with it being the sequel to the gacha game, especially after what a slog Yumia became towards the end, but I had a lot of fun. The alchemy's not as complex as some of the titles, but it's still pretty good. I liked the characters, but most of them were characters from other Atelier games (which shouldn't be a surprise if you're at all familiar with the gacha game). The story was also pretty interesting, though most of the actual plot was kept in the last quarter of the game. All in all, I enjoyed myself and I'm glad I bought this.
