Powerwash simulator of metroidvania games. Combat is a huge downgrade from the first game and exploration is slightly better. Starts up extremely slow and starts getting fun halfway through (4-5 hour). I was expecting more after the first game but not really disappointed. Could have been a much better game if they didn't touch the combat system at all.

Absolutely incredible game. If you loved the first Axiom Verge, this one makes an excellent sequel. It's similar enough to the first game to warrant the Axiom Verge title, but different enough to make it feel like a fresh injection of blood into the series, which is what I love most in a sequel. In case you aren't familiar, the original Axiom Verge was like a love letter to Super Metroid - in gameplay, yes, but even moreso in capturing that weird, ethereal alien beauty that Super Metroid captured so well. Both Axiom Verge games use a gorgeous pixel art style to create fascinating alien landscapes reminiscent of HR Giger paintings, mixed with splashes of eastern cultures (Russian, Indian, Kazakh, etc). Atmosphere plays a huge part in the charm of both games, and 2 delivers in spades on that front. The music was especially good! I was a bit ambivalent at first about the change from gun-based combat to more of a melee focus, but you learn to get over that quickly enough, and as the game's story comes together, it makes more sense contextually anyway. The core gameplay loop is still intact regardless, hitting just the right mix of collectible-hunting, experimenting, hacking enemies to change their behavior, and accidentally discovering speedrun tricks along the way. Everything comes together in a very satisfying way. What else can I say, really? I was super pumped to learn about this sequel, and now that I've finally gotten to sit down and play through it, I am super pumped to say it was fucking worth the wait!

It's still a great game but I do feel the first game is better. AV2 has pixel art styled graphics which are somewhere in between NES and SNES level and the soundtrack is nicely put together. The exploration aspect can be a little much at times and I found myself a little frustrated after trying to find a way to make progress at several points. There are goal indicators but these are often false friends as the way forward is obstructed by an ability you don't yet have. I still did enjoy it, overall, but not quite as much as the original AV

Sideways thumb. It has some really nice music, varied environments and you find a lot of upgrades early on. On top of regular metroidvania abilities, you acquire skillpoints that you can put into things like HP, weapon damage and perhaps most interestingly: Hacking. You can hack enemies to take control of them or bosses to disable much of their weaponry. Despite all these positive factors, i felt very take or leave it with the game (and am leaving it). Kinda how I felt with games like MindSeize and Vision Soft Reset. It's hard for me to pinpoint anything specific that leaves me feeling this way about it. Navigation has the potential to get a little confusing and that is definitely one factor.. Perhaps i'm just not enraptured enough with its level design.

i loved it. a lot of people say the first game is better. and, while i do agree, i feel like this game might be overlooked because of that. it shouldn't be. this game is VERY MUCH worth playing. it's story is a lot less confusing as well. another difference is the first game focused heavily on ranged weapons. this game has one or two ranged weapons, but it's focus is mostly on melee weapons. which means you're going to have to get a lot closer to your enemies. so, it's a good thing that the game's movement is very fluid. it feels so buttery smooth. another big difference is this game's greater reliance on the controllable drone. you'll face some bosses with it this time. and surprisingly, it feels pretty good. you only get one main attack with the drone, but it's pretty versatile in how you can use it. especially with some upgrades. there's even puzzles to solve here. not that the first game didn't have them, but here, they're a part of progression. not just stuff you do for hidden items. though there's plenty of that too. there's a lot to love about this game, and i'm glad i gave it a play instead of continuing to ignore it due to hearing people complain about how it's not as good as the first game. i do still prefer the first game. but this one is a worthy sequel, and i still love it. honestly, the main reason is the atmosphere. the first game is a lot creepier and twisted, the music fits that tone too. the music in this game fits as well. but i'm not as big a fan of it. i love that dark creepy tone. it's what hooked me on the original metroid, and it's what i wanted from the first game because it sought to recreate that feeling. and it did. the atmosphere of this game reminds me more of Zelda II the adventure of link. there's even a hidden powerup for one of the weapons that makes you fire beams from the dagger weapon, just like link in zelda 2. the TL;DR though, if you liked the first game, you'll probably like this one too. maybe you'll like it even more. maybe not. but it's worth playing. it's just, good.
