Oct. 2025
This game feels like it was made before AV1. I didn't dislike it but there were so many times where I felt like poor choices were made to differentiate the two games. I knew that 1 was an homage to Metroid but after seeing the more original 2 struggle with it's attempt to be more original with design choices, it made me retroactively consider 1 to be more derivative. Story wise I very much enjoyed the lore which gives a lot of background to the war from AV1 that led to the creation of the Rusalka. The details are convoluted but it feels rewarding to piece everything together and if the third game ties everything up nicely then I won't mind that the gameplay in this game was mediocre. Although the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying, the final bits you get to connect the two games were pretty cool. There's just not enough there for it to be really good. Sadly everything gameplay felt like a step down. The focus on melee weapons is uninteresting. Most of the combat is very easy and I never really cared what weapon I equipped. For how distinct all the guns were in 1 I thought this game would take it further - instead you choose from maybe 1/5 as many options all of which you can just spam at enemies mindlessly to proceed. Combat is more of an annoyance than anything else. You can choose to use your mana to hack but it's usually unnecessary when you can just run by or use the explode move for instant kills. Bosses are the biggest disappointment of all. Gone are the awesome moments of huge boss battles that stay with you long after. In fact I killed 3 bosses before I even knew they were bosses they were so insignificant to me, along with offering no challenge. Even the final boss is supremely unsatisfying but at least a few of them have some nice pixel art. The pixel art in general is fantastic. The references to old Sumerian statues and architecture mixed with robots is truly unique and a highlight of the game. However it just doesn't quite match up to the HR Giger look of 1. You never get that awesome feeling of apprehension that came with discovering Rusalka, not knowing if they were dangerous or truly your allies. The one large creature in the game does basically nothing outside of lore. The music is very beautiful, the singer has done something amazing here... But it doesn't really fit with a metroidvania. Loud middle eastern horns and wild singing with big crescendos are just not "exploration" music and I got tired of hearing these tracks on repeat except for a couple cool ones like Stranded and Monsoon that felt like they set the mood properly. I'm not a fan of bit tunes type music but the breach music at least felt more appropriate in most cases. I'm still a big fan of amazing tracks from the first one like Vital Tide and Otherworld and I hope the next game goes back in that direction. I will recommend this game solely for the story which I think it's even cooler if you read Happ's manifesto on simulation theory, but everything else left me a bit disappointed knowing it could be better. I really hope Happ takes these criticisms and improves on them for the next game.

Very good game, but it is very different from Axiom Verge 1. Almost no shared upgrades, different combat, different design philosophy in general, different aesthetics, different music style... a bold decision that also seems to have left it with a reputation as "the bad one". Inevitable outcome of being so different, but it is not bad. If you consider map design to be the heart and soul of metroidvanias, get it, play it, enjoy it, its one of the best in that regard. If you instead consider combat to be the core, perhaps pass on this, combat is not a focus. I've played about 30 hours on other platforms, ignore the low playtime.

Axiom Verge 2 is a solid Metroid clone if you want little to no combat, just a well-put-together map and some fun powerups. Its pacing (of how often you find items/powerups) is its best trait, though I think the first game was a bit better about that. The world opens up steadily. Some powerups felt quite clever, and even familiar types of upgrade (wall climb, grappling hook) felt fresh because they didn't work the same as others. The fast travel you get eventually may be convenient, but it also led me to disengage with the world and rush the lategame objectives, exaggerating how abrupt the ending felt. It also felt like I only needed to use some later powerups 2-4 times, so in a way the experience lost steam in the end. The combat in AV2 is almost completely optional, which really shows how mediocre it is. Combat falls into the two typical boring playstyles of face-tanking -- not bothering to dodge and mashing attacks until you win -- and turreting -- finding cover and jumping and shooting from that spot until you win. This goes for basic enemies and bosses. So, it doesn't feel skillful, and after fighting a couple bosses, I realized I wouldn't lose much by skipping them. It's impressive that I generally enjoyed my time with the game anyway; at the least, it reflects well on the exploration. AV2, like AV1, has poorly paced lore, but here the issue is info dumps. I played every other day or so for a week, but struggled to retain information, and although I liked bits of the story, it didn't feel like it had much of interest to say. Also like AV1, AV2's soundtrack is too energizing for its darkish story and ambient exploration. In Super Metroid, I occasionally felt genuinely unnerved as I explored; I never did in AV1 or 2. Overall, I'm mixed on AV2. I went into it thinking I'd prefer it to AV1, but it feels about the same, and I care less about it than the first. If you like one you'll like the other, but I've played several metroidvanias I've preferred, including most of the actual 2D Metroid series, and Zexion, which blows AV1 and 2 out of the water IMO.

Good game, great continuation of the story. The story writing was great, the controls are tighter than the previous game but only after you get all updates, with early level of ability unlocks inviting a bit of frustration. I would love to see what a 3rd game would bring! If the dev is reading this : Thanks for making the game.

Everything you Love about Super Metroid-Vania is instantly enhanced and greatly expanded on in the sequel to the smash hit Axiom Verge. The maps are huge, the secrets are many and the game play is FUN! I cannot say enough great things about this game. The first Axiom Verge was made by Thomas Happ alone! This one he had a little more help with it but its still mostly him. Its an incredible and captivating story about different universes which combines ancient lore and lost history tid bits into the fold. Its an artful masterpiece that could easily become a household console name like Metal Gear or Metroid or Mario. We are even more blessed to have it on Steam! BOTTOM LINE: BUY THIS GAME! Its worth far more than you are paying!!!! Best of all buying this game helps support the health care of his Son whom is disabled for life from terrible health care here in the US. If I had a nickle for every time the ER nearly killed me, I would be rich, but I dont and neither did Thomas when the hospital discharged his son with a critical condition that only got worse. His son had jaundice and the toxins built up and caused brain damage. If it were not for the first game being successful, his son would not even have health care. Thanks to Thomas for pouring his heart and soul into the Axiom verge series! His son will continue to get the life long care he needs. I can only hope Axiom Verge 3 is half as good as the first two were. These games are modern miracles and we should endeavor to support more high quality work like this! I am just grateful I lived long enough to taste the imagination and genius of such creativity. I love you Thomas. You made a childhood dream come true for me twice now!
