This game series got me so amazed that I stopped playing the pirate version halfway through and bought both games on Steam. Developer, please continue making games like this, you're really talented.

There is a pure joy in playing Beyond Citadel that can't be described until you've experienced it. It'll take a while to get there– the game has a bit of a learning curve– but it is absolutely worth it, especially if you enjoy good gunplay and smooth movement. Like its predecessor, Beyond Citadel is a love letter to old-school shooters. Not just the usual pantheon of boomer shooters, though– its inspirations run far deeper. The colour palette and a GUI element come from the venerable RELICS. The gameplay and plot are reminiscent of Marathon and a little of Pathways into Darkness. The design of the helmet and one of the mission names is a clear reference to MDK. Level design is more of a Wolfenstein affair in three dimensions, and the flow of the game is closer to Brutal Doom than any other. Look past the references, though, and the game brings something to the table that no other shooter does: a focus on gunplay and movement to a frankly ecstatic degree. Let's talk about movement first, because it's the easy one. Movement carries with it some momentum. You get a double jump immediately, then unlock air dash(es) over the course of the game, and then with a couple of level ups, you'll have enough stamina to turn into a sprinting, screaming blender of death. Most of the game is playable by corner peeking and quick shooting, but some encounters must be cleared using good movement, and mastering the learning curve is satisfying. But what really makes me smile is the gunplay. If you're a firearm lover, no other action shooter compares to Beyond Citadel for accuracy in depicting their proper operation. Some VR games do (H3 comes to mind), but those aren't really about the action; Beyond Citadel is. Each firearm action must be operated accurately (unless you turn that feature off). You have to operate the slide / charging handle on magazine-fed firearms after reloading, unless you left one in the chamber. The revolver operates in both single-action and double-action mode. The break-action double-barreled shotgun's barrels can be loaded individually with shot or slug. There's a lever-action tube magazine rifle in .50 BMG, which is low-key the best weapon in the game. You can combat load the bolt-action sniper rifle with one in the chamber, and inserting a magazine and trying to close the bolt will fail, because you're double feeding. You'll have to close the bolt first, then insert the magazine. Speaking of magazines and speedloaders, the game keeps track of how many you have, and while it auto-reloads them for you, if you run out of them, you'll be reduced to loading single rounds for weapons that can still be loaded, and the automatics will be unusable. What this means is that combat is a little more measured, a little more considered, than in a boomer shooter. There is an initial hesitation when you're learning a new weapon– "alright, hit 'X' to remove the magazine and keep it, then 'R' to insert a fresh mag, and oh, I was dry so I need to hit 'C' to charge it". Then there's the period of comfort as you get used to operating it. And then, when the stuffing really hits the fan, there's moments of panic when you _know_ you messed up the operation. And trust me, you will know. Then it's a frantic rush to recover, clear any malfunctions, and get back in the fight, unless you accidentally threw away your last magazine, in which case– switch it up! And after all that, once you've gotten used to how the weapons work and how the Martyr moves, the game truly comes together. After a few hours in, you learn the rhythms of each enemy and each weapon, and suddenly, each encounter turns into a hypnotic dance, especially once you start planning your moves a few steps in advance. There is a steep learning curve, especially if you're not familiar with how firearms function, but mastering it opens up some truly joyous gunplay that is unparalleled in the shooter world. One major quality-of-life improvement over the previous game is that falling into the void no longer insta-kills you. It doesn't even deal damage, you just reappear on solid ground. Yeah, it's great. If the dev reads this, yo, back-port that into Citadel, thanks.

Genuinely the first game where women run around gutting each-other with nothing but pasties on that I can safely say most people genuinely play for the gameplay.

Ignore the low playtime, I played about half of the game via an early build on the dev's blog. tldr: A well made Marathon-style boomer shooter with an intresting setting that also just so happens to be a guro fetish game (maybe) Sorry if this is disjoined and nonsensical I am completly unable to put my thoughts into coherent words and this isn't a essay so I'm just going to spew words until I'm done. Like the first game Beyond Citadel is a boomer shooter, but unlike most which try to emulate the old doom style, Citadel is much more like Marathon, slower, more methodical that type of thing. And let me just say this right away but this game is a massive improvment from the first in pretty much every regard, gameplay, graphics, level design, everything basically. Something I like quite a bit about this game is it's... clunkiness(?) what I mean by this is that something as simple as reloading is way more involved than a normal shooter, instead of just pressing R to reload there's a sepreate button to remove the magazine from your gun and then another button to put another in and than another to cock the gun. Now that may seem like needlessly making something easy more complicated andddd you are right! But it's cool I like it! Of course the reloading isn't the only thing like that, your helmet is your UI which is to say you can take it off and play with no UI if you so wish, there's diffrent types of armor and you can look down and ah... see it's lovingly crafted details. Okay and that's a perfect segway into the other thing to talk about this game and that is to say that this game is very horny and is almost certainly a fetish game (I will not say it is 100% because at the end of the day I do not know the dev, nor do I speak their language) What fetish you may be asking? It's guro or more plainly gore, And if that is something you don't like and turns you away that is completely understandable. Personally I find the gore so over the top and goofy that I can't find it perverse or anything like that, it reminds me of those old anime OVAs filled to the brim with crazy shit and in the end it really isn't any worse than Gears of War or like Happy Wheels and shit. Anyway, moving away from that, some other things I think are worth pointing out, the character designs are good and interesting, even more so if you are into weirdo ero-guro sci-fi cybernetic stuff, the guns are cool, a stand out for me is the assault rifle that is a Chauchat with a laser beam for an underbarrel. The sprites and the art for the menus are all nice and it all has a concrete style to it. Yeah I like it :)
