I enjoyed the second game more but this is still solid. Although unlike 2, where at the very least 30% of the gags landed, here none of them land just like in 1. At least lichi sensei is still great.

I've been trying the BlazBlue games and this one is far better than the previous 2. I don't care for the storytelling in story mode, but the Fighting is pretty awesome. Lots of unique characters that bring a lot of variety.

BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend, developed by Arc System Works and published by H2 Interactive Co., Ltd., stands as one of the most polished and content-rich entries in the acclaimed BlazBlue franchise. As a refined version of the original Chronophantasma, it brings together everything the series is known for—complex mechanics, dazzling anime-style presentation, and an ambitious narrative that blends science fiction, fantasy, and existential drama. This entry continues Arc System Works’ tradition of pushing the boundaries of 2D fighting games, offering a gameplay experience that is as mechanically demanding as it is visually striking. It’s a title that caters primarily to dedicated fans of the genre, but its depth and style make it one of the most distinctive fighting games on Steam. At its core, Chronophantasma Extend maintains the intricate combat system that defines the BlazBlue series while introducing refinements that make it more dynamic and rewarding. The game’s mechanics revolve around a delicate balance of offense, defense, and resource management. Each character possesses a unique Drive ability—a personal mechanic that sets them apart from the rest of the roster—and mastering these Drives is essential to success. The introduction of new systems such as Overdrive and Crush Trigger gives battles even greater strategic variety. Overdrive temporarily enhances a character’s abilities, allowing for devastating combos and comeback opportunities, while the Crush Trigger mechanic enables guard-breaking attacks that punish overly defensive play. Together, these additions make combat feel more fluid, aggressive, and unpredictable. The result is a fighting experience that rewards not just execution but also tactical awareness and adaptability. The roster in Chronophantasma Extend is impressively large, offering over twenty-eight playable characters, each with distinct fighting styles, aesthetics, and mechanics. This diversity ensures that players can find a character that fits their preferred playstyle, whether it be the balanced offense of Ragna, the zoner precision of Nu-13, or the technical command of Kokonoe. Returning fighters have been fine-tuned for better balance, while newcomers such as Celica A. Mercury and Lambda-11 bring fresh options to the meta. The variety extends beyond simple aesthetics—every character feels like a new learning experience, with combo structures and timing windows that differ dramatically from one another. The game’s robust training and tutorial modes provide an excellent introduction to its layered mechanics, easing newcomers into its complexity while offering advanced challenges for veterans to refine their skills. Visually, the game continues to uphold Arc System Works’ reputation for stunning 2D artistry. The hand-drawn character sprites are vibrant and fluid, animated with incredible detail and personality. Each movement, from basic attacks to elaborate super moves, is accompanied by dynamic camera shifts and explosive particle effects that make battles feel cinematic without losing clarity. The stages are equally detailed, ranging from futuristic cityscapes to mythical battlefields, all rendered with rich backgrounds that breathe life into the world. The musical score, composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari, is a highlight—an energetic fusion of rock, orchestral, and electronic elements that perfectly matches the intensity of combat. The English and Japanese voice acting are equally strong, lending emotional weight to both the story and the in-battle dialogue. Where the game truly differentiates itself from other fighters is in its story mode. BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend delivers a massive narrative experience, one that could easily rival a full-fledged visual novel in length and complexity. It continues the saga of the Azure Grimoire and the ongoing struggle between Ragna the Bloodedge, the Librarium, and a host of intertwined characters, each with their own motives and secrets. The narrative is filled with dramatic twists, philosophical undertones, and an impressive amount of world-building. However, the storytelling can be dense and overwhelming, especially for newcomers who haven’t followed the series since its inception. The plot references past events and characters frequently, and without prior context, it’s easy to get lost in its labyrinthine structure. Still, for those invested in BlazBlue’s lore, the story mode is a rewarding continuation, offering new revelations and emotional payoffs for long-time fans. In terms of content, Chronophantasma Extend excels at giving players value. Beyond the extensive story mode, there are multiple single-player and multiplayer options, including Arcade, Versus, Score Attack, and Challenge modes. The game’s online play remains solid, with relatively stable netcode that allows for competitive matches without excessive lag. The customization options, unlockable artwork, and alternate costumes give players more incentive to continue playing beyond the main modes. For those who enjoy testing their limits, the Challenge mode offers intricate combo trials that demand precision and creativity, further deepening the game’s replayability. That said, the game isn’t without its weaknesses. The complexity that makes Chronophantasma Extend so satisfying for hardcore players can be intimidating for newcomers. Even with tutorials, the game’s layered systems, resource meters, and combo timings take considerable time to master. The steep learning curve might discourage casual players looking for quick gratification. The story, while ambitious, can feel overly verbose and convoluted, often bogged down by long stretches of dialogue that disrupt the pacing. Additionally, while the PC version runs smoothly for most players, it lacks some of the optimization polish and modern features found in more recent Arc System Works titles. Despite these minor flaws, BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend stands as a superbly crafted fighting game that perfectly captures the essence of what makes the genre exciting. It combines technical precision with dramatic flair, balancing intense mechanical depth with a bold, stylized presentation. The game’s visual artistry, expansive content, and finely tuned combat system make it one of the most complete and rewarding 2D fighters available on Steam. For veterans of the BlazBlue series, it represents a high point in the saga; for newcomers willing to invest the time to learn its intricacies, it offers one of the most satisfying and visually stunning experiences the genre has to offer. It’s a game that celebrates both artistry and mastery, standing as a testament to Arc System Works’ dedication to elevating the craft of fighting games. Rating: 9/10
