I have a genuinely a hard choice between recommending BloodRayne or not. It is very much a product of its time, mainly the culmination of the late 90's, early-2000's: leather clothing, one-liners, akimbo gun-fu, slow motion and sexual undertones. Then again, the vampire theme has always been inherently sexual. And BloodRayne takes that at face value, hell, even the logo is phallic. Okay, it is not as horny as Steam's "New and Upcoming" section, but... That said, the game has some pretty neat moments, like it's 90's goth atmosphere. As well as some cool characters like Hedrox, who I would totally see in my fave vampire media - VTM. Beliar's visual design is amazing, such a cool looking boss (even if the fight itself sucks). Also, applause for the VA of Rayne - Laura Bailey who did a great job giving Rayne a personality, even if the writing can only have people talking in one-liners. (She is also the voice of Abby in TLOU2, Serana in Skyrim, MJ in Spiderman, and many other iconic characters). The level design goes from, "hey this is kinda fun", to "holy hell what is this house of leaves labyrinthian level design", to souls-esque "HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS THE LEAST AMOUNT OF FUN POSSIBLE" (I'm looking at you "Bridge Level"). Also that HORRIBLE CAMERA that keeps locking to the direction you are moving, and the stutter you get from playing on modern PC, even though the game itself is pretty stable and has never crashed for me. Somewhere in all of this is a commentary about how Rayne is an example of objectification of women in gaming, but ACCIDENTALLY also an empowering figure fighting fascists, where as Jason Stanley argues in "How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them" , misogyny and patriarchy are core building blocks of the fascist ideology used to enforce hierarchy. [url=https://joelburgess.com/2005/11/bloodrayne-feminine-idealist.html]( Joel Burgess - BloodRayne 2's level designer's perspective probably adds a lot to this discussion) There are also a bunch of undertones if you wanna read more in depth into this game. And yeah, a dhampir killing nazis and shooting enemies while drinking blood and using them as a meat shield is so absolutely badass. The thing that this game missed to become a cult classic on the DMC/VTMB level - is first of all a killer soundtrack, and more time in the oven for the gameplay, story, level design... But the recipe was there.

Very fun with an over-the-top campy style. Can be a bit clunky at times, which makes sense considering its age, but still a very enjoyable blood-sucker of a game.

It's time... If games like Stellar Blade, Nier Automata, and Bayonetta can succeed, then it's time for Rayne to be rebooted. But let's talk about the original. It's a cult classic. Even for its time it was rough around the edges. It feels like a boomer shooter under the hood with auto-aim (popular for 3rd person action games at the time) and extremely wonky melee combat slapped on top. But what Bloodrayne had was charm. Rayne is the perfect embodiment of the pop culture goth/punk vibe and vampire media of the late 90s and early 2000s. You know, back before Hollywood turned Vampires into a joke. When they were dark, sexy, scary, and badass. Rayne should have gone on to be a much bigger deal than she did and I mostly blame Uwe Boll and his abysmal movie adaption. So yea...Bloodrayne needs a reboot in the vein of Stellar Blade if you ask me. It should lean into the goth/punk badass femme fatale schtick. Give it awesome parry and dodge melee combat and a healthy amount of gunplay and TONS of unlockable sexy outfits. Rayne deserves it. Even if this game has aged very poorly. It's still worth a visit. Nab it when its on sale.

Playing BloodRayne is like watching a horror movie. Except you're the movie monster, and the victims are all Nazis, so you don't feel sorry for them. A classic hack-and-slash action game with variety of guns in the mix to spice things up. Hm? What's that you say? You were expecting a game from 2002 to have a story? Perish the thought and see disappointment flee from you. Rayne does deliver suitably action-moviesque one-liners and has some fun banter with Nazis before she kills them, but the game doesn't have what I'd call a 'story'.
