Holy moly... I thought Cat Quest 2 was a giant upgrade. But 3 is just, wow. If 1 is a home run, and 2 is a grand slam, then 3 just hits the ball into outer space! spoilers First of all, the game is beautiful. Just drop dead gorgeous. From the character animations to the clever use of 3D for the map and ships. In fact, I recommend playing all 3 back to back, just so you can see the giant leap in graphics from 1 to 2 to 3. And the music is top notch, especially when travelling the open seas (I think it's called Dynamic Arrangement, or Vertical Layering? I'm not too sure.) As for game play mechanics, they continue to be top notch. The difference in this game is that spells aren't directional like they were in the previous games. They more or less lock on to enemies, which is also a very nice change imo. They also don't level up to 10 anymore, but the trade off is you have a different currency for leveling than before. The ship combat is fun and fast. It's also surprisingly very easy to handle. In fact all the controls feel sharp and snappy. You'll notice this more if you play the games in order. They really figured out how to refine the movement mechanics from the first game. I think my favorite part about these games has to be all the effort put into hiding secrets and adding post game difficulty / superbosses. You can achieve everything the game has to offer in 1 playthrough, without any guides because the game naturally rewards your exploration and curiosity (although you might need to look up a couple of hard to find chests.) And if you get lost, the game has clever ways of reminding you of how to find its secrets. The story is very heartwarming, even when compared to the previous titles. This one really went there, and had some genuinely bittersweet moments. But that's not the best part. *Extreme Spoilers* The best part is definitely the cosmic sub plot and upgrades to the eldritch monsters. Seriously, Cathulu's upgrade, The North Star, and Doggy Jones were REALLY good jumpscares when compared to the previous games. Not to mention Aelius and the Zero Dimension. I hope they keep it up! All in all I highly recommend this game. I'm also putting this franchise on my GOAT list for sure. Right up there next to Crosscode, Tunic, and Chained Echoes Zelda might've done it first, but Cat Quest did it best. And calling it now... whenever they get around to Cat Quest 4, I'm predicting it's in the Wild West, with trains! [Off Topic Rant: ] Honestly, this is straight up incredible to me. A small team of 3 people, later upgrading to more as they said in the secret area pulled off this level of quality, and most importantly CREATIVITY. I know games are extremely difficult and expensive to make, but I can't think of too many franchises that get exponentially better with time. And this is definitely one of them. This pretty much goes to show you that indie games are where it's at when it comes to quality. I know AAA is technically very competent overall, but it really doesn't feel the same when comparing them to games like this. AAA games just feel soulless, whereas these games are filled to the brim with heart. Thank you Gentlebros for making this game and this franchise. [Rant Over.]

People make a lot of comments on the game's brevity but I think it adds to the experience rather than detracts. It's exactly as long as it needs to be without making you feel bogged down by the weight of numbers. The story especially benefits from this. The entire story, every side-quest even, deals with some level grief or loss. If the game stayed too long in any of the stories they would actually lose their punch. As it stands I absolutely love the small stories in this game and multiple times they made me stop playing and go hug my children. Can't get a much better recommendation than that. As for gameplay it's a massive improvement to Cat Quest 2. Still room for improvement on the gun balancing (they suck) but the new spells are awesome, the new mana system is basically a more succinct version of CQ2, you get Fast Furward as a toggle once you beat Mew Game with it (huge QoL), and there's generally a lot more room for tackling higher level enemies than the rather binary action in CQ2. The ship feels great to pilot and just zoom around the map. And personally speaking I appreciate that there isn't an NPC following me everywhere randomly triggering enemy attack animations and resetting attack timers while I'm trying to kite them. Graphically it's a huge improvement as well. There's a lot more dungeon variety, more quest variety, everything just looks and feels better. Music is on point. Map exploration is rewarded meaningfully and is highly encouraged. NG+ is given a lot of slack (on time investment) if you choose to take it. All around just great choices and improvements made by the Bros. Can't wait for CQ4.

A bit of a step down for the Cat Quest series. With much more focus on sailing and open water exploration, the game itself was not only shorter than its predecessors but also lacking in both combat, story, and dungeons. The pirate theme and ocean setting was a cute change for the series but took away a lot of mechanics that had become staples of the franchise. The introduction of the rat characters was a nice addition but aside from them being "pi-rats" the pirate aesthetic didn't add much to the story ie there didn't feel like a real reason why the MC was a pirate other than having an excuse to sail on a pirate ship. The combat was simpler but didn't take away from the usual addictiveness of the gameplay and the smaller areas to explore weren't any less fun but the story was shorter than I expected being the third game in the series. The best part was the intertwined storylines of all three games leading into the fourth one. Even the usual fourth wall breaks were missing except for one or two. The Tavern Tales update was good and really added some extra content for kicks and giggles if you wanted to wail on enemies again.

Cat Quest III: A Royal Meow-velous Adventure Cat Quest III takes the charming formula of its predecessors and infuses it with a fresh coat of paint, adding new mechanics and a grander scale while retaining the series' signature humor and charm. While it builds upon the foundation laid by the previous games, it also carves its own unique path. What's New and Improved: Larger World and More Diverse Environments: The game world is significantly larger and more varied than before. Expect lush forests, towering mountains, and even underwater sections, each with its own unique challenges and creatures. New Abilities and Combat Mechanics: The combat system has been enhanced with new abilities and spells, adding more strategic depth to the battles. The addition of mounts adds a new dimension to exploration and traversa. Character Customization: While not as extensive as some RPGs, the game offers more options for customizing your cat's appearance and abilities. Enhanced Story and Characters: The narrative is more engaging than in previous games, with a more complex plot and memorable characters. The humor remains a key element, with plenty of puns and witty dialogue. Improved Graphics: The visuals have received a noticeable upgrade, with more detailed environments and character models. What Remains the Same (and why it's good): Charming Art Style: The game retains the adorable art style that has become a hallmark of the series. It's consistently delightful and visually appealing. Witty Writing: The humor remains a key element, with plenty of puns and funny dialogue to keep you entertained. Minor Drawbacks: Technical Issues: As with any game release, there have been some reports of minor technical issues, although these seem to be relatively infrequent. Pacing: The game's pacing might feel a bit slow at times, particularly in the early stages. Overall: Cat Quest III is a worthy addition to the series, successfully building upon the strengths of its predecessors while introducing new features and improvements. The enhanced world, new abilities, and engaging story make it a satisfying experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. While a few minor issues exist, they don't significantly detract from the overall enjoyment. If you're looking for a charming, funny, and engaging RPG, Cat Quest III is a purr-fect choice!

Completion: 100% Achievements Playtime: 7.2 hours If you enjoyed Cat Quest 1 and 2, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. It’s action-packed, loaded with puns, and simply a good time all around. The combat feels slick, the humour holds up, and the overall vibe is just as charming as ever. That said, I think the achievements could be improved—there’s not much incentive to dive into Mew Game+ without any new achievement goals to chase. Personally, that took some of the wind out of my sails for replayability. Still, I’m looking forward to Cat Quest 4 and seeing where the wonderfully bizarre story ends up next.
