On the surface, it's like any other roguelike dungeon crawler - level up your characters as you go through the levels, gradually making your way from one area to the next. And it does that fantastically. Every character plays differently, and you can pick the ones you like the best to level up, or go all out and level up them all. If this game didn't have a story and was just *this*, it would still be worth playing. But the story. And the world. And the characters. Hot damn. I would watch a movie about this game's world. I'd watch a series of movies. I'd subscribe to a streaming service that has nothing else on it that I care about if it had a TV show based on this game. I'd cosplay as the kid with the knives who has the same name as me. This is one of my favorite games ever and 70% of it is because of the world, the story, and the characters. I can't recommend this one enough.

If Hades is the best roguelike about a dysfunctional, broken family, then Children of Morta is the best roguelike about a healthy, wholesome one I first finished the game in 2020 on my PS4 (so add 20 more hours to the total playtime) and recently picked it up again on Steam. It’s an amazingly beautiful little masterpiece. I had a blast playing through the main story and even started NG+—something I almost never do, but this game was that hard to put down. ✨ Gorgeous pixel art 💛 Heartwarming story 🎮 Tight, fluid gameplay 📈 Satisfying progression I highly recommend giving this game a try. Huge thanks to the Dead Mage team for creating this world! 🙏

Children of Morta is an exceptional game that stands out for its unique family progression mechanic. The idea of leveling up a whole family, each with their own abilities and roles, adds a refreshing layer of depth to the gameplay. It's not just about improving a single character but watching the whole Bergson family grow stronger together, which is both rewarding and emotionally engaging. Playing this game with a friend was incredibly immersive. The co-op experience is seamless, allowing each player to choose their favorite family member and dive into the action. The beautiful pixel art, combined with the rich narrative, keeps you hooked from start to finish. Overall, Children of Morta is a must-play, especially if you're looking for a game that balances action, story, and co-op gameplay. It's a journey worth taking, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a deep and engaging experience.

I would recommend this game to anyone who likes the pixel art style, action-RPG combat that isn't too complicated, and replaying levels to find a few new secrets per map. It took me less than 30 hours to feel like I fully completed the game despite not getting all the achievements, but I could've stopped and finished the game around 20 hours easily. That said, 3 complaints: 1) Procedurally-generated encounters and map boundaries, but the level still feels very much the same every time. 2) A little too much grinding toward the final half of the game if you want all characters to at least level 20. 3) The final cutscene glitched out on Steam Deck, so I got to see only the first line of the final dialogue and hear only audio while watching credits scroll.---(This bug is years-old at this point. Modern gaming/developers are so often disappointing. Everything feels 90% finished.)
