The Cathedral. That place is straight up a war crime. Beautiful? yes Fun to navigate? Absolutely not Whoever designed that maze owes me therapy Story wise, it leans full anime very dramatic, kinda cliche, very God Eater vibes. Which is a weird mix for a Souls like that’s usually more subtle and bleak. It’s experimental, and your mileage may vary. Some people will love it, others will cringe a bit Me? It grew on me This is 100% a guilty pleasure game, the longer you play, the more you start seeing its value. if you thought this was a hardcore soulslike.... relax. it's an anime waifu creator simulator with oversized weapons where an AI companion carries boss fights for you while you're lost in another identical corridor. the textures of the cathedral will haunt your nightmares but the character editor easily destroys even AAA games.

While it takes inspiration from Souls-like games, it builds its own identity through fast-paced gameplay, unique abilities, and a strong anime aesthetic. + Excellent character customization and flexible builds + Fast, rewarding combat with fun companion mechanics – Some level design can be confusing and repetitive – Story and dialogue don't always reach their full potential 8/10 – A solid Souls-like with its own unique identity.
I recommend this game if its on sale. I picked it up for $5. So it was well worth the $5. Code Vein doesn'ty do anything great. Its just all decent and not overly challenging. I like anime and I like souls games. Not a super fan of either but I enjoy them. So it was worth playing through the game once. I have no desire for new game plus or unlocking the other endings. Nor does this game make me want to go and buy Code Vein 2. Its a solid 2019 souls like that is showing its age with the progression the genre has made since its release. Pick up on sale recommend.
Code Vein is an odd game. With 100 hours and 4 playthroughs (I did not raise the difficulty for the NG+ runs because I'm a coward and was just achievement hunting) under my belt as of writing this review, I'd say that I can definitely share my thoughts on this game that I have grown surprisingly attached to. There are a lot of things I've heard about Code Vein, such as it being, "The Anime Dark Souls" and the like, and well, I can't really say much about that. The Souls inspiration is very clear that even I, who has never played a FromSoft game and only watched my friends play them, can see it. Movement is usually slow and you need to think about what action to take at any given moment, whether you want to block, dodge, or see if you can get a parry in, or whether to back away and spend your limited magic resource known as Ichor to deal some damage from afar. Really, biggest difference from Code Vein and a Souls game is that Code Vein is far more beginner friendly. The design and story of Code Vein really take a different approach, and also where a lot of people have the hardest time getting into the game. This game really shows its true colors here with animations being clunky from time to time, level design that is fairly easy to navigate (with the exception of The Cathedral of The Sacred Blood) after your second time through, and the typical anime elements of fanservicey characters and tropes that are very prevalent throughout. But, somehow, despite it all, this game proves to be charming. So, do I recommend this game? Simply, yes, but I also understand that this game isn't for everyone. Perhaps the difficulty is too much or too little, perhaps you can't get past the character design and/or story. That's okay! As person that is mediocre at video games and really enjoys vampires in stories, I find that this game is right up my alley, but I won't respect you any less if you choose to walk past this game without a second glance. But, if you're interested, give it a try.
