This game actually is pretty fun. You play a time traveller who is in ancient china just to discover you are the reason history made the country flourish. It´s a nice FMV with a TV Series budget historical Play in First Person view. Characters are pretty good chosen. Acting is great and gets cheesy where it actually works best that way. There´s also lots of humor. As you already expected: The game´s language is Chinese. And it´s chinese by default. But you can change to an english mode, with subtitles in the options. The subtitle translation is easy to follow. But you need to be a fast reader. Also in some cutscenes the timing is terribly wrong. If the developer reworks this two good hints how to do it right: Don´t use three short lines in subs. That´s too short to read sometimes. Better pick one long line with more text. And additional. Check again if the timing is okay. But anyway. I was able to follow the context full. The translation is localised which means you don´t get confuded too much by chinese phrases and idioms that don´t make much sense in other languages. Yeah. This game is an example of a good chinese FMV title. I really enjoyed it. It´s surprisingly long. The game itself contains about 13 Hours of Rough Video and until you have explored all possible paths in the game dating game element included you probably spend arond 18 Hours. So with the setting the price is absolutely justified.
If you like FMV then i think this game is good and very entertaining but i do have some small gripes with the game. The first small issue i have is the beginning because there really isn't any real set up to the story, your kind of just thrown into it but this issue in my opinion is easily overlooked if you just pay attention. Some translations are kind of bad and you can't see certain choices fully because of the translation conversion. The biggest issue for me personally is that there are times when the subtitles don't sync up to the characters talking which is very annoying especially if your trying to understand what the hell is going on and then there are scenes where the subtitles just don't show up at all and your just left wondering what they were even talking about so unless you know or understand mandarin during these scenes your gonna miss out on certain details. Despite this the game and story still kept me engaged enough to play but for those that are less tolerant this will be very annoying, and in my opinion developers should definitely fix the syncing subtitle problem with the game and the no subtitles for certain scenes but I honestly don't see that happening. I just think if your going to sell this internationally then you should make a better effort to international fans with the subtitles, other than this issue the game is good and I do enjoy the story. I also encountered a horrible issue in one of the ending branches in the final chapter where the scene just freezes stopping me from progressing.
I am trying to find a game similar to Road to Empress while I wait for Lunar New Year, when Road to Empress 2 is suppose to come out. This game is similar but the acting is way cheesier. The premise is fun though. You are a time traveler that comes back to feudal times as a warrior. You are able to leverage your knowledge and make choices that impact the fate of your character. I'm editing my review! I played more of this and I actually enjoy the cheesiness now. LOL. Shout out to a familiar female character. I think the storyline grows on you. It's entertaining.
