One of the best deduction and detective games I have ever played and I hope we get a sequel or just something similar from this creator one day because Callum absolutely killed it. It's not the hardest game, though it has it's own challenges. What it is, is a wonderful story from start to finish and I found myself genuinely excited to see more info on the people I was investigating even after I had solved their part in the mystery.
Kinda surprised the game went totally under the radar for me until a streamer I watch stumbled upon it by chance, as it is right in the zone of games I like to play. And it's a shame, as it was such a nice one! Daemon Masquerade is one of these great weekend games that is best played on close semi-long sessions. It's universe is quite rich, interlinked and though about for it's scale, which makes it all the more pleasant to play. I did not know what to expect when going into it, but what I got was a compelling story, written in a universe that is both absurd and very down-to-earth. Unraveling the details of this world and understanding how each part interact with each other was a lot of fun. It seems like the game is the first of it's developer, and it's self published, so it's expected to have a few details about the gameplay or such that could have been enhanced, but there is really no flaw in the game sufficiently big to hinder it's charm and qualities. Only the way to play the game is unclear on some aspects but you eventually get by it quite quickly. I hope more people will come around to play this game!
this game is very strangely built. i enjoyed it but i dont think it will leave much of any impression on me. interacting with documents is surprisingly difficult for a game about interacting with documents. you right-click to open a document but if you right-click again it will erase everything you drew on it and you can't undo it. which is strange because there is an undo button, it just doesn't work for this. drawing on the notes in general is also surprisingly annoying--the brush is either so big or so small since its based on the document you're looking at. i found myself wanting to write a detailed note on a picture but 1. i have to draw it all out and 2. there wasn't nearly enough room. you have to use this same drawing mechanic for jotting down names too, which is cute and more or less works, but it's a bit annoying to not know which names you've already jotted down or not. the pacing of the game is interesting. red herrings are used sparingly and appropriately and the solutions to a lot of puzzles are not as clear as they seem. the game does an ok, but not fantastic job at proving you actually know what specifically is happening in the way that this more modern approach to detective games wants to do. i had one puzzle where i thought i solved it, and my answer was correct, but for a completely different reason that i was not even close to tapping. other times, i felt like i figured out a solution earlier than the game wanted me to, and had to wait until the game thought i could know about it. i don't like the ending no siree. i found out all the names were anagrams of each other independently, but then it felt like that was leading me nowhere. i eventually saw the note in the pathos description about this and knew it would get me closer, but i was dumbfounded at the classified note about the woman. you gain the ability to look at the previous version, and while most of the note was readable through the black, a specific mention of "all IDs are the same" is the only one that was not obfuscated before. it felt like there then had to be some significance to the ID card, but there wasn't, and i think that's strange. as for the actual ending twist, it just felt very stupid and unsatisfying. i like the writing and i like that there's a northernlion reference and i like the owl. i would play more games by this developer COMMENT BELOW IF YOU DGAF ABOUT THIS REVIEW
A very unique detective game experience, mostly due to its incredibly charming art, truly a feat of strength of self-expression in a world that is increasingly more automated and boring. Gameplay-wise, you will be tasked to draw conclusions from a list of evidence that expands on a daily basis, until the deadline. You are fully in control of the day transitions, so you can take as much time as you want. The game contains a drawing mechanic where you can doodle to your heart's content, though more importantly you also have to sometimes use it to prove your deduction, e.g. circle a specific part of a photo. There might be one or two deductions that you might find a little bit obtuse, but for the most part, it should be smooth sailing. Whenever you want to submit proof, you can usually point to a number of pieces of evidence that you consider important, so that increases the chance you will get it first try. The materials you will peruse and the story transitions contain a staggering amount of detailed and beautiful illustrations, with a plenty of fun references and humor. That's what's completely immersed me in and I've enjoyed every second of my time with this piece of art. I wish more people could find and enjoy this game, I only happened on it by chance by going full delve mode during the detective festival and really diving deep in the list of related games.
I am becoming a mega-fan of "Roottree-likes" (perhaps this genre needs a better name) these document-based, non-linear deduction games. I'm also a fan of Death Note and other manga about outthinking one's adversaries, laying traps, and solving puzzles. This absolutely hit for me on those axes. This is a hidden gem. Being by a solo game dev and artist is pretty astonishing feat of creativity. It's not perfect; but it's really damn good for what it is. Excited for what the future may hold for Callum Page.
