March 2026
I've seen a few pretty critical reviews of this game that have no more than a single hour of playtime and all their issues look to be specific to them, not the game in general. That being said, there *are* some bugs in this game that's been out for all of three days and the devs haven't even had time to roll out the first hotfix for yet, so keep that in mind for a lot of the complaints so far. Darkwater is definitely a fun game. Even and especially for $10, a friand and I snagged it and somehow 9+ hours just disappeared while we tried to survive combat with a torpedo-laden kraken, POIs with bombs and bear-sized lobsters, and boarding parties trying to take our sub..... and we will be doing so again soon, I'm sure. During that time, not once did I think there needed to be more variety. I haven't played two of the games that this is compared to, but I can easily see the Lethal Company comparison (with graphics that don't give you a headache, to boot!). With the below, keep in mind the game has been out for a whopping 3 days at the time of writing. Pros: •Managing the sub with friends is a lot of fun •The game doesn't infinitely scale to be impossible with more players, so it's actually rewarding to play *with* •friends and you aren't penalized for doing so. (and it's highly encouraged) •The sub-on-sub combat is unique (in my experience) every time •The on-foot exploration treads a good balance of exploration and being afraid to turn the next corner •The 90's style menu graphics when using various computers are a nice touch •If you die, while you can't speak to the living (but can to other dead allies), you *can* at least alert them to your death by finding and walking up to them in your hard-to-miss mouse form. They may not know what happened, but at least know they're down an ally. •There's a comparison to be made to something like Murky Divers where everyone has a different dedicated role to play in multiplayer, there's *currently* no difference in the setup between trying to solo a run and having multiple people with you, so a single person can do the top listed job and even just a second person can do everything else. A third friend would be able to help with everything else and maybe a fourth, but a fifth person I think folks would be getting bored with not enough jobs to do. •Decision maker with the scenario prompts, pilot, and manning weapons •Restocking weapons (namely mines and torpedoes) occasionally •Repairing leaks & consoles constantly during combat •Pumping water out of the sub from the above-mentioned leaks •Putting out fires from special enemy torpedoes •Repelling potential hostile's boarding your sub Cons: •Having to both wait to get to the next trade station, which may be several 'jumps' away, *and* also pay 20 credits to resurrect (any number of) fallen friends is a bit harsh. Honestly, having a module to purchase for the sub that would allow free (or even charge "scrap") revives after the current mission is over would be a good idea imo. • If you join an in-progress game, you join dead and the others have to pay to resurrect you. Very difficult on challenges that intentionally leave you with very little credits. This very well could be a bug, but it's consistent. •Regarding the multiple roles mentioned in the Pros section, I think having a solo-only sub config like the current setup would be good, then having a different config for multiplayer that separates out the piloting/text-prompt-decisions/mine-dodging role and the weapons handling be specific to the console already in the torpedo room would be a good idea (in my humble opinion) •The sea urchin has got to either go away or not spawn on maps with water on the floor so you can't see them. They insta-kill you if you touch them and can take a lot of the fun out of a POI if you seemingly die for no detectable reason and have to pay to be revived at trade station that may be 4 jumps away. Absolutely none of these are deal-killers and I would highly recommend this game to anyone, especially if you have a friend group to play with. I only foresee this game getting better, and it's dang good as it is (even with the occasional bug as a fresh 1.0 release).

this is an amazing game, especially with friends. its like a mix of FTL ship combat, Lethal company looting, and Barotrauma submarine vibes, all perfectly blended together. Highly recommend playing this game, it has a lot of content and replayabiliy, definetly worth the money.

First person FTL meets Barotrauma. Very fun game, exciting to play solo or with a group. There's tons of strategy you can run in outposts as well as out in the open world. The new update adds a nice little challenge to the game. Fully worth the 10 dollar price tag, you'll get at least 20-30 hours of fun with the current content in the game, and the dev is adding more!

Informational Stuff: Traversing the map: FTL style exploration with outposts, events, shops, and fights Outposts: Scavanger style gameplay like REPO, Kletka or Lethal Company. Sometimes theres a bomb that you have to defuse to prevent flooding, sometimes its pre-flooded. High chance at money and loot, medium chance at death. A few different types of enemies with 2 main humanoid types being most common. You can also turn on gas lights by looking at them, or fix electric lights if you find the console. Shops: Spend your money to customize the size of your sub or what is in it, make it a maze, make rooms inaccessible, the options are up to you. Remember that you can happily run with rooms just for their passive buffs. Pick supplies off the ground if your moving rooms around, and out of the lockers in a room if your going to sell the room. Events: Chance at free loot or fights Ship Vs Ship combat: First person FTL. One person solves a puzzle to buff evasion, One person steers the ship to avoid mines and more evasion buffs, one person handles targeting and reloading, last person repairs the hull and pumps out water (if you have a pump, if not then you better get to a shop or an outpost). You can comfortably play with as few as 2, swapping tasks and focusing on what needs to get done at that moment. Ship HP doesn't exist, you only have to worry about how much water you have on board, and if there is too much, finding a way to stop yourself from drowning. The ship doesn't die till you are all dead so its fairly forgiving. (Low risk Low reward) First Person combat (boarding parties): glitch as hell and likely to get you killed without achieving much, but its a fun side option for when you decide enough is enough. Weapons are fair enough, but coming up surrounded by 4 people can be a little much in most cases. (High risk Slightly less low reward) Meta Progression: Unlock 5 ship types by completing different achievements as you play, none of them are overly difficult and the different ships are unique enough to keep things interesting. Death: Run around a rat, mocking your former crewmates while they cant hear you by rotating on their asses. Be revived for free in outposts (randomly within the outpost), or at cost at stores. Either way you will leave all your gear with your corpse, and wont even get a complimentary wrench. Story: Exists, gets you buy, is fun to read the logs when you have time. Expect your emergent story telling to be the focus though. Personal Opinion: Aside from the boarding parties, game is fairly bug free considering its Early Access status. 10$ is a fair price point for it's current state, and I hope to see more that gets me excited as time goes on. If the devs add in more enemy veriety, fix up the boarding parties, maybe a few more area types such as caves to explore, a bit more diversity in events (like people asking for more than just fuel) and maybe even a few more systems and I would pay 30$. Heck if they go HAM and add in tons of stuff I might even go higher than that. Either way though, at the current price point with the current content Its a damn fine recomendation from me.

Enjoyable, but truly early access. Hoping to see further development. Potential is there.
