It's fun doing bad things to the nosy busy bodies who feel it's their business to break into my home and snoop around.

First off: I recommend this game, provided you know what you're getting. With which I will now assist. I was going to start this off with the cliché 'Good idea, bad execution'... But that wouldn't be quite right. It's more accurate to say 'good idea, very basic execution that begs for more content, which it is getting, but at a drip-feed pace.' The basic gameplay of Deck of Haunts is solid. You play as a Haunted House with a big heart. Mind you, I don't mean a Haunted House that's nice and friendly and cares a lot about the people who enter it... I mean that you literally have one room that's a giant heart and that is your only weakness. During play you use a variety of abilities (represented by cards) and the passive effects of your rooms to drive the humans who try to explore you insane or to kill them (or both) and between rounds you use the dark energy, generated by the madness and death you inflict, to build new rooms and expand, move or upgrade the existing ones. All with the goal of keeping the humans away from your heart. Conceptually, this sounds incredibly fun. In practice it is fun, but it all feels a bit limited. Unless you're willing to build your deck for maximizing your energy by making sure you kill as many humans after driving them insane, while using move cards to keep one human alive and sane to keep the round from ending, you're not really going to have enough energy to build a very big, maze-like house (you're not going to be building a house the size of the one in the store screenshots outside of endless mode after you're finished a run). You also only get the opportunity to buy a single card that upgrades a single basic room (or sometimes further upgrades an upgraded room) once, once per round and that's as an alternative to adding a new card to your deck. On the whole it's best to view Deck of Haunts as a finished game when it comes to bugs (I haven't encountered any big ones) and general concept, but an Early Access game when it comes to content. What's there is serviceable and fun to play, but limited in scope. Content is still being added in updates, but not exactly at a lightning pace.

Fun! I definitely agree with the other reviews saying it is much easier to kill explorers than drive them insane (also more worthwhile as you get 5 more essence). I do wish there was more benefit to draining sanity, seems weird how a haunted mansion would be so keen to kill than spook haha *update a day later* so after a couple more hours of gameplay i've learnt a bit more about the mechanics of the game, mechanics that really should've been relayed through a tutorial but nontheless haha, such as: - you can tell which room an explorer will enter next by hovering over their portrait (it will be highlighted green) -when an explorer has not yet entered the map you can tell which door they will enter by again hovering over their portrait (it will be highlighted orange) -USE MOVE CARDS!! little did i know they are your saving grace from preventing explorers reaching your heart or fleeing explorers escaping as highlighted before this game sorely needs a thorough tutorial. yes that probably makes me a trash noob or whatever but it would really help players understand some of the trickier mechanics and avoid them getting frustrating. worst thing would be for players to quit on the game and not want to bother playing new updates out of fear that it hasnt become anymore fun

First of all, I have to say: I'm really bad at roguelikes and deckbuilding, but I still like to play them. I've tried couple different roguelike deckbuilders and this one doesn't make me immediately rage, quit or make me feel too stupid for this type of games. I would say this is great start for someone who wants to try roguelike deckbuilders. It's not the hardest and most complex out there, which I don't think is bad thing if someone wants an easier game, BUT you can make your game more challenging with different totems or by changing difficulty. Devs seem pretty active and have already added more stuff to the game. New game mode, cards etc. If I have to say something bad about the game.. There have been some bugs, but nothing game breaking. Devs seems to actively look into them and fix them when you report them. Also main menu, buttons, settings feel a bit too simple/basic. I think you could say they have a bit of mobile game feel. TLDR: It's fun game that I recommend for everyone no matter of your skill level on this type of games.

I played the demo way too much and eagerly awaited full release. The game builds on the promise of the demo - more nights, many more cards, many more room types. Modifiers to change-up runs with added difficulty. And there's still a lot of space for expansion later. If you haven't played it - try the demo, but know that the full game is much richer, and more satisfying. There's nothing quite like coming to the end of a long day at work and expanding the mansion into an ever bigger, hungrier monster. Separating foes, preying on their minds, confusing them in mazes, and then cursing them to slowly bleed out. But I have to go. There are fresh investigators coming. Drawn by the lure of the old belltower, greed or duty. And all will end the same ways - lunatics rocking on the floor, amongst the corpses of their friends.
