It's deceptively simple at surface level. The player has basic movement, can shoot, and must avoid being hit, but complex interactions arise from these simple mechanics. Poor positioning can cause skulls to unpredictably scatter around enemies, gigapedes obscure essential targets, spiders apply pressure by threatening to consume fallen gems, making them a high priority target. These interactions of mechanics and enemies are what make the experience so dynamic. This is where the game really shines. Emergence and interconnectedness are core to its design. Mechanically, movement, target priority, aiming are crucial. At higher level play, gem collection and homing fundamentally change how the game is played throughout a run. There is a strong consistency and fairness within gameplay. Spawn orders and times are deterministic. The player always feels at fault for their deaths. The art style and sound design are also phenomenal, both functionally and aesthetically. It is up to the player to decide their goal. Leaderboards and the game's only achievement help facilitate skill growth and competition, but ultimately the game is an experience about breaking and pushing beyond one's limits.

By far one of the best games I've ever played. Devil Daggers is an incredibly refined piece of art, it has to be experienced to be fully understood. Moreover, YOU DON'T fucking play Devil Daggers, it doesn't feel like a game at all. It feels like a primal survival experience, it's an odyssey to flee from the horrors of a brutally hostile hellscape. But you can't go anywhere. The premise is very simple, you kill endless hordes of demons. They drop gems which are drawn to you automatically, but for this you need to stop shooting, rendering you vulnerable. Those gems increase your firepower in different levels, so you can kill faster and more efficiently. But as you improve, this hellscape keeps getting harder until you (physically?) can't deal with it anymore and succumb to these unholy hordes from the abyss. From the design and development perspective, it's simply flawless. The controls are incredibly smooth and responsive, which is a requirement per-se because every millisecond counts. This means, everything is designed to keep you under stress, you can't look away, not even scratch your nose, that means death. The graphics are awesome, clearly inspired by Quake (1, of course), with low-resolution textures and models, a touch of PS1-like jittering, and a cohesive and beautiful palette. In the era of ugly shooter sandboxes for 12 year-old squeakers designed by daltonic monkeys, this is a lesson in aesthetics. Every tone here serves a purpose, not only visual, but to guide the player as well. And the sound design, what can I say, spectacular. It also has a vital function, you need to focus on the sound to survive. This game succeeds in making your heart beat faster than a Nasum track. The feeling of beating your high score is pure adrenaline, something I rarely felt with videogames as an adult. You are all pumped up, but at the same time terrified, as you venture into unknown territory. After dying a thousand times, you know that the progress here is so sequential, that when you break a record you are about to die very soon. At some point I thought the 60-second-mark was unbeatable, ridiculous, I know. Now I'm at ~320 seconds, trying to make it to 500, and in terms of motor skills, it's one of the most difficult things I've done in my life... fucking hell xD Just buy this shit and get ready to FOAD. You. Insignificant. Human.

Easy to pick up, insanely difficult to master. Simple concept, lots of fun + depth, massive skill ceiling. But becomes more painful the better you get. 10/10 worth buying if you like a challenge!
