Wargame for freaks /pos Genuinely good. Also a complete mess to understand sometimes. Routing magic paths hurts my brain. Devs have been making their freak games for freaks for 3 decades at this point. The server is a single computer in their basement (there is a backup computer). It's hard to understand and opaque as hell even with external tools and wikis. Most people will bounce off of it, but people who latch onto it will love it.

When you first start playing this game, the unbelievable amount of content within will be overwhelming. You will be paralysed and unable to do anything. The later game has an unfun level of micromanaging as you are forced to manually sift through each potential spell, research tree, unit type, craftable item and army for every damn commander. So you watch some tutorials, play around a little, follow a guide. Then it starts clicking. You begin to know what summons work, and what don't. You can eye up army strengths relative to one another. You know which magic schools to research, what items to forge, and how to design a functional god for the particular strengths and weaknesses of your chosen nation. Then the game becomes more fun, and does not stop becoming more fun. The unreal amount of content becomes its biggest strength, for you can continually refine your strategy, and do increasingly fun things with increasingly less mental effort. If you have autism, and/or like dwarf fortress, factorio, or other games that require an unfun learning period - and you don't mind some jank in return for incredible mechanics, give it a go!

If you’re the kind of strategy gamer who enjoys spending hours—often outside of the game itself—researching and plotting out various convoluted paths to victory, Dominions 6 is the game for you. The premise of Dominions 6 isn’t all that different from many other grand strategy games: you’re the pretender god of a certain culture, vying with other pretenders to rule the entire world and become the One True God. You do this in one of three ways: by conquering every province in the world, by converting everyone to your religion, or by controlling all of several “Thrones of Ascension” scattered across the land. With your rivals trying to thwart you at every step. It’s a turn-based fantasy strategy game with auto-resolved squad-based tactical combat. Where Dominions 6 really stands out from the pack is in the vast variety of different paths you can take to victory (or defeat). I can (and do) spend hours in game setup deciding between different nations and pretenders. Do I want mighty but costly troops, or powerful priests who can buff up cheap cannon fodder armies? Do I want my pretender to lay waste to my enemies in combat, cast powerful spells, search for magical resources, or bestow blessings such as productivity, order, luck, or magic upon believers? And once the game is underway, more choices abound: do I focus my magical research on battle spells, summoned creatures, or magic items? If my enemy is a nation of nearly immortal demons mostly impervious to mundane weapons—I’m talking about you, Early Age Yomi—what troops, spells, and items will I use to combat them, and what mages and resources do I need to generate these? If you’re the kind of player who enjoys spending hours figuring out which combination of 7 magic items will turn a particular commander into an unstoppable juggernaut of destruction, and then working out the spells and mages you’ll need to forge those 7 items and summon that commander, you’ll love Dominions 6. That’s not to say the game is perfect. I’ve played Dominions games for over 20 years, and I’m well acquainted with the flaws of the series. My biggest complaint has always been with the tactical combat. You can give general orders to your squads, and queue up to five specific spells for each commander. But the computer takes it from there; you can only watch the replay to see how things turned out. It would be much more fun if you could issue orders to your commanders and squads during the tactical battles. As it is, the battles usually go at least 20 rounds, and after your five scripted actions are used up, your armies often do stupid things, like your mage-priests exhausting themselves casting minor sorcery buffs rather than blasting enemy undead over and over again with fatigue-free holy spells. Or your archers wiping out half your infantry with endless volleys of friendly fire trying to take out the lone surviving enemy unit after the battle is already decided. Also, don’t play Dominions 6 if graphics are important to you. The first Dominions game I played was Dominions 2, back in 2004, and the graphics haven’t changed appreciably since then. I’m still squinting at tiny, virtually indistinguishable units on those battle replays. And although you have to enjoy micromanagement to some degree to appreciate Dominions, as the game wears on, particularly on large maps, managing your empire can become tedious. That said, I’m over 150 hours into my first game of Dominions 6, and I’m nowhere near bored. There are still plenty of unbelievers to convert by the sword, earth-shattering global enchantments to cast, unique magical artifacts to forge, and elemental royalty to summon. After all, somebody’s got to ascend to godhood sooner or later; might as well be me!

I really only play Dominions single-player. This makes me a pretty small minority of the target market of the game. I am a huge fan of Dominions 5 but never really was able to commit to the game because the computer opponents would, even with mods, create ridiculous armies filled with chaff units and tons and tons of independent units. It was difficult to find computer armies that felt like they were appropriate for the factions being played, Dominions 6 has changed that considerably. I haven't installed any of the updated single-player mods and I am seeing better, more thematic, armies being assembled by the computer opponents. This one factor has changed the game considerably and made it more interesting and fun to play single-player. Additionally, the new Cave layer has made opponents like Agartha far more trouble to deal with. Having armies pop up in the middle of your territory from a cave entrance you didn't pay attention to can put a wrench in your plans. The number of approach vectors for enemy threats has expanded.
