Rise of the White Sun differentiates itself from other grand strategy games by embracing it's historical era fully. Every character and army has a level of loyalty to you, even if it is not your character or army. Every social class in every town also has a statistic determining how much they like you. Resources are scarce, and oftentimes armies don't even have enough rifles for their own men, much less artillery guns and machine guns. Other warlords serve themselves solely, which can be used to get them to desert to your side. This also applies to your allied warlords, who may betray you if you're doing poorly, or sustain themselves by looting your towns if you're doing well. This creates a ruthlessly pragmatic gameplay style that is unlike any game I've ever played. However it is not without downsides. The controls and mechanics are fairly unintuitive but more importantly confusing, which can largely be contributed to the lackluster tutorial that does a very poor job of actually explaining the fairly complex game(I'd recommend joining the Discord for advice). Despite this it is packed with content, there are plenty of factions to choose from and many have completely unique mechanics and playstyles. Making the game very replayable, and overall I'd recommend it to fans of grand strategy games or people interested in the Warlord Era.

This is an incredibly well-researched game that immerses you in the (quite stressful) world of warlord-era China, as the communists and the nationalists are beginning to rise and attempt to resist foreign intervention in the country while also trying to unify China under their respective governments. It also includes Tibetan spiritualists, various rebel groups, mystics, White and Red Russian expats, Mongolian steppe raiders, and Dr. Sun Yat-sen himself. It is lovingly crafted, but clearly made by a tiny team - I think it's mostly the work of one person. The UI has issues, the English sometimes feels awkward, the tutorials are lackluster, and online documentation for the game is minimal (although there is a bibliography, which is awesome). The gameplay loop itself is in my opinion VERY fun, but I have seen that it is divisive. I genuinely think a lot of the negativity people feel towards it comes from them not accepting the game for what it is - you're at war with almost everyone almost all the time because it's a free-for-all scramble for the country, you make decisions by ordering your generals to do things but the generals might not obey if you haven't paid attention to their needs, and by extension the soldiers may disobey their generals even if the generals obey you. Because of these factors and more, it can feel very frustrating to play the game and wonder, "Why is the game fighting me?" But I think that's part of the fun. Save often when you're still new, and over time you'll learn how to manage the various personalities and material conditions required to achieve your goals. Anyway, 同胞们,中华人民共和国中央人民政府今天成立了! 中国人民站起来了!

- Order your troops to attack bandits in the adjacent city. - One of your batallions simply ignores orders due to the insane opium abuse. - Another detachment moves forward and someway being defeated by those vermins. - Outcome of the next attacks are also negative. - At the same time rival warlord invades your unprotected domain and easily seizes it. <Well, something obviously went wrong, just reload the game and use something different> - Bribe those bandits as they seem to be tough and stubborn soldiers. - Hmm.. Besides they are tough they are also wise - as almost all of their weapons were stashed - only a few dozens remain. - Equip them with rifles from your own armories. Train warfare skills well. Pay enough to sustain morale. Hire capable officer to lead them personally. - Hire enough ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and give unit an order to occupy unprotected county of neighboor hostile warlord. Annex it. - Rival army comes, time to show those bastards! - Your "elite" ex-bandit batallion entirely, with the officer at the head, deserts just before the battle begins, literally disappearing in the air with all their loot and money provided. I should have guess this just at the moment they stashed their rifles after being bribed. Why should they play with the fate this way, indeed? Love this game. One of my favorite strategy games despite not being a fan of turn based strategy. Set in the 1920s Warlord Era of China, the game is already unique due to its setting, filling a niche that is very untouched. Filled with rich history this alone makes it worth getting in my eyes. For those who liked to play China/the Warlords in Hoi4 I can definitely recommend it, even if the gameplay is different (on the account of this being a turn based strategy). The gameplay offers various warlords, in different time periods with different objectives and different playstyles, this prevents repetitiveness. From commanding massive powerful armies and having to deal with the logistics, supplies and loyalty of the men, to gameplay of using Guerilla fighters that are small and nimble to playing with subversive methods via sabotage, terrorism and espionage, the game offers everything! This game is also unique in its ability to interestingly portray guerilla warfare and subversion. Most games just use these elements as a supportive secondary feature, however ROWS has dedicated factions and goals that are all about this kind of gameplay (Mainly the CCP faction). Recruiting Militia/Bandits to then turn them into Red Guards/Guerilla fighters, to then outmaneuver, out last and finally win against an enemy thats 10-50 times the size is such a joy I cannot explain it. Other cool features such as secretly building up your influence inside a city, cause strikes inside it, and finally rise up inside it to capture it, is also such a unique and fun experience! So to summarize, I can only recommend this game. If you like the history, get it! If you like turn based strategy, get it! If you like unique gameplay that isn't portrayed well in other games, such as guerilla warfare and subversion, get it! And even if you don't like turn based strategy games (which I for example don't), I still recommend this game, if you're unsure, just wait for a sale and then buy it at a reduced price! The content to cost ratio is massive!

This is a rough gem of a game by a lone developer working in a very neglected era in strategy history games. I am referring to the time of the warlords in China from the death of Yuan Shi-Kai until the end of the Civil War in 1949 about 35 years. The game concentrates on the period from the mid-20's to about the mid-30's with the personalities from the various factions and independent warlords. He should be awarded a PhD in modern Chinese history. I wrote my thesis on the events surrounding the Taiwanese rebellion in 1947 against Chiang Kaishek's occupying army, using the primary sources I could find like old Shanghai newspapers reporting on the events, etc. So, I am well aware of this time in history. Many warlords eventually joined forces with the Nationalists by giving up their eventual hopeless cause of remaining independent and becoming generals in Chiang Kaishek's army. Many of them lived in Taiwan when I lived there in the 1980's. I know the designer is working on translating the game into Chinese. I hope he uses the traditional characters that was the language of the time. The incredible effort pulling this off far outweighs some of the rough edges. My playing time of 7 hours was just finishing the 4 tutorial scenarios. I will put many more hours into this. 85/100
