As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, I’ve played a lot of games across the franchise. Some were clunky, others were flashy but shallow. But DRAGON BALL FighterZ? This was the first time I felt like I was watching the anime and playing it at the same time—and somehow, it all worked. The first thing that hits you—besides a Goku beam to the face—is the absolutely jaw-dropping art style. Arc System Works captured the look of the show perfectly, blending crisp 2D-style animation with 3D models in a way that feels straight out of the series. Every attack, every transformation, every beam clash feels handcrafted to ignite that nostalgic fire. And those cinematic finishers? Yeah, watching Goku launch a Spirit Bomb or Frieza destroy a planet never gets old. I expected fan service. What I didn’t expect was a tight, competitive fighter underneath the flashy anime exterior. The 3v3 tag system adds depth and team synergy, but it’s also surprisingly accessible. Even as someone who’s not a fighting game pro, I could pull off cool-looking combos and feel powerful. At the same time, I’ve seen high-level players turn matches into surgical battles of reflexes and mind games. You can button-mash if you want, but FighterZ rewards practice and smart play. It walks the tightrope between entry-level fun and esports-level depth, and somehow doesn’t fall off. The base roster is packed with series favorites—Goku (obviously), Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, Gohan, and more. And with DLC, you get characters from Dragon Ball Super like Jiren, Kefla, and UI Goku, plus wildcards like Broly (Z and Super). Each character plays uniquely, with different assists, supers, and mechanics. Whether I wanted to crush with Android 16’s grabs or zone with Beerus’s unpredictable orbs, there was always someone fun to try. And let’s be real—hearing the Japanese voice actors (or English dub, if that’s your thing) in the middle of a mid-air battle just makes it hit that much harder. The story mode is... okay. It’s mostly a “what-if” scenario involving Android 21 (an original character), mind control, and a lot of map-based movement. It’s not as gripping as the anime arcs, but it’s fun for lore and unlocks. Arcade mode, training, ranked and casual online matches, and replay features round out the experience. The online netcode was spotty at launch, but improved over time—though the community still wishes for rollback netcode universally. DRAGON BALL FighterZ is the most stylish, most polished, and most faithful Dragon Ball game ever made—and one of the best fighting games of the past decade. Whether you're a die-hard DBZ fan, a casual gamer, or a seasoned fighter, there's something here to dig into. It's not just a love letter to the series—it's a full-powered Kamehameha blast of adrenaline, competition, and style. As thrilling to watch as it is to play. A Super Saiyan-tier fighter. Fast. Flashy. Deep. Fun. DRAGON BALL FighterZ nails it all. Rating: 9/10

I write this as someone who generally doesn't enjoy fighting games; FighterZ is the one and only traditional fighting game that has ever managed to hook me, with well over 800 hours across all the platforms I've played it on. The reason for that is simple, it's one of the few fighting games I've played that is easy to both understand and pick up and play. My biggest issue with other games of this genre is that while their systems have great depth, to reach that depth you have to cross multiple barriers before you can begin having fun, and one of them is the input combinations. I simply don't care for the obsession of other games for making me do God of War quick time events for even the most basic moves, it ruins the fun for me. Not the case here, everything from specials to supers is simple and straightforward; a Quarter-Circle + a Button, that's it. There's no BS, to hoops to jump through, just an open invitation to learn the systems at play. This makes a world of difference in being able to enjoy the game, it allows you to focus on learning the neutral, playing mind-games, bettering your defense, learning advanced combos, practicing team-synergy, creating set-ups and mix-ups, all without having to worry about whether or not my hand will be able to pull off the move I want to use. For this, it's one of few competitive games where I've been able to have fun right off the bat, while improving my skills constantly too. This is all without mentioning how gorgeous the presentation of the game is, doing true justice to the show's artsyle, looking 2D while being 3D with many techniques like frame timing, model manipulation, smears, impact frames, and more coming together to make it feel true to the anime. It's clear the devs love the series and wanted to do it justice, as every move from every fighter is a direct reference to either the manga, anime, or a previous game, all the while not compromising game-feel. And of course, the Dramatic Finishes that re-create some of the most iconic moments of the series are some of the coolest things I've ever witnessed. The game does such a fantastic job at being like the show, that at times, for as tacky as it is to say nowadays, it really did make me feel like I was in an actual Dragon Ball battle. Words alone can't do it justice to how much I love this game. As a Dragon Ball fan, it's a love letter to the series, and as a videogame, it's the fighting game I've dreamed of my whole life. One of my all-time favorite video-games.
