June 2025
When Dragon Ball Xenoverse launched in 2015, it did something bold: it gave me a chance to not just play as Goku or Vegeta—but to fight alongside them. This wasn’t about rehashing old sagas for the hundredth time. This was about changing history, rewriting fates, and being the time-traveling hero who could stop it all from falling apart. It wasn’t perfect—but it was ambitious in a way Dragon Ball games hadn’t dared to be in years. The highlight, and real hook of Xenoverse, is its character creator. You’re not just some palette swap—you choose your race (Saiyan, Human, Namekian, Majin, or Frieza Race), customize every feature, and build your own story. And it actually feels like your story. Training with Vegeta, taking on Cell, helping Gohan push past Super Saiyan 2—all while the game acknowledges you as a part of that history? As a DB fan, it’s deeply satisfying. The story is pure fanservice—with a twist. Instead of replaying the same tired sagas, you’re fighting to preserve the timeline. Time-traveling villains Towa and Mira are messing things up: turning allies evil, powering up enemies mid-battle, and warping classic moments into chaos. So now, it’s you helping Goku win. Or you stopping Vegeta from dying early. The concept is genius, and even though the story isn’t Shakespeare, it works because it lets you intervene in the world you love. Xenoverse’s fighting system is a hybrid. It’s not a traditional 2D fighter like FighterZ, but it’s also not pure sandbox brawling like Tenkaichi. It’s a fast, free-flowing 3D arena fighter with stamina and ki management, teleport dodges, super attacks, and transformations. Combat is fun and flashy, but it can get repetitive. The hit detection is occasionally iffy, and fights sometimes devolve into spamming ranged supers. Still, when you pull off a perfectly timed Vanish Counter into a Kamehameha? It feels incredible. The RPG elements are cool—leveling up your character, mixing gear and outfits (yes, I wore Saiyan armor with Piccolo’s cape), and choosing your mentor all give a sense of growth. But the grind can get real. Some missions have frustrating RNG-based unlocks, and if you're a completionist, prepare to fight the same battles dozens of times. Toki Toki City—the game’s central hub—is lively and fun to explore, even if it’s a bit small. You can see other players running around, queue for Parallel Quests, and duel online. The online mode was a bit shaky at launch but improved over time. Co-op missions, PvP battles, and team-ups add to the replay value, especially if you want to test your build against other player-made warriors. Strengths: -Original story that respects the DB canon -Deep character customization -Satisfying combat (when it clicks) -Tons of unlockables, moves, and gear -Strong fan service and what-if scenarios Weaknesses: -Repetitive grinding -Some unbalanced moves and AI behavior -Clunky hit detection in fast fights -Story can feel rushed near the end Dragon Ball Xenoverse took a risk—and it paid off. It didn’t just let you replay the sagas. It let you be a part of them. The combat might not be the tightest, and the grind can wear thin, but the sheer love for Dragon Ball that pulses through every battle, every cutscene, every transformation? It’s undeniable. For the first time in a Dragon Ball game, I didn’t just watch the fight. I felt like I belonged in it. A time-bending love letter to fans, with heart, ambition, and your own power level. It’s not the cleanest fighter—but it’s one of the most personal. Rating: 8/10

Created a time-traveling anime demigod with pink hair and named him “Chungus.” He saved the universe. Twice. Dragon Ball Xenoverse is the closest you’ll get to living inside a DBZ episode without legally changing your name to “Vegeta” and screaming in a canyon until your neighbors call the cops. The plot? Time is broken. History is being rewritten. Trunks somehow got promoted to Time Cop. Your job is to fix the timeline by punching literally everyone from Raditz to Beerus so hard they forget what year it is. You start by creating your own character from several races: Saiyan (for people who want to scream a lot), Namekian (for fans of stretchy limbs and fatherly wisdom), Frieza Race (for folks with anger issues and a love of hover chairs), Earthling (the underdogs), and Majin (for those who want to punch people while looking like bubble gum). Combat is pure anime chaos: ⚡ 100mph martial arts? Check. ⚡ Explosions the size of small moons? Check. ⚡ Getting combo’d into the stratosphere by Yamcha? Unfortunately, yes. Multiplayer is fun, until someone shows up with a modded character that can sneeze and delete planets. Offline, the AI is either brain-dead or suddenly decides it’s in the final round of the Tournament of Power. Voice acting is classic DBZ: 90% shouting, 10% gasping, 100% nostalgia. Would I recommend it? Yes, especially if you’ve ever screamed “KAMEHAMEHA” into a fan as a child (or adult). Just be ready to grind like a Namekian farming Dragon Balls for rent money. Final Score: 9 out of 10 overpowered Saiyans who still somehow lose to Hercule in a cutscene.

The game delivers solid fan service, though repetitive combat and graphics that don't fully exploit the power of PCs might detract slightly from the experience. Ultimately, I highly recommend this game as it's an enjoyable journey for fans and an approachable introduction for newcomers.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse brings fans into the Dragon Ball universe with customizable characters and a fresh time-traveling storyline. The combat captures the series' intense, high-flying battles, but repetitive missions and camera issues hold it back. Still, it’s a fun experience for die-hard Dragon Ball fans. Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
