I work in a nursing home. Most of my elderly residents have the shakes, arthritis, troubles with vision, and other ailments that mean they can't keep up with their hobby of sewing. Yesterday I showed one of my residents this game. She used to be a professional dressmaker irl. It brought her SO much joy. She lit up when she saw all the different fabrics and patterns, and started comparing them against each other to design a new dress. She has been so depressed recently. It can get so boring in nursing homes, because as I said, people become too frail and sick to keep up with the hobbies they used to have. So when I saw her smile and engage with the game, when I saw the gears in her brain turn and her creative juices flow once again, it literally brought a tear to my eye. I cannot sing this game enough praises, and I'm not even factoring in the joy that I myself have experienced while playing it. It has inspired me to sew again. And I mean really sew, not just mending (which is all I have done with my sewing machine in the last decade). I have found my creativity again. Dressmaker team, please know that you have created something extremely special here. You have given old ladies with arthritis the gift of dressmaking again. You have inspired me to get out my sewing machine again. And our experiences are only a drop in the ocean; you have touched so many lives with this game. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Edit: WOW, I didn't expect so much attention for my review. I only wanted to pad the "overwhelmingly positive" stat on steam because I think this game deserves it! So I wrote the review and forgot about it. Then my friend tells me I have thousands of likes and I had another look and WOW :O I've never had more than a couple of likes on a review before, this is so unexpected and insane. But thank you for all the love everyone! I'm glad people found it helpful :) 2nd Edit: Yes, this is legit, I brought my laptop into work again today and my resident designed another dress. But she told me to bring my actual sewing machine in next time so she can see my physical projects I've picked back up, so that's what I'll do next week :) I still can't believe it's been a decade since I last created my own dress physically. Being an adult is annoying because you need to work to earn money to afford your hobbies, but when you get home from work your brain is too fried to do anything but watch or play stuff on the computer. And then all these hobbies get put on the backburner. And then all of a sudden it's been 10 years and these projects haven't been touched. So when this game comes along and lets me design dresses even while my brain is fried from work, it reignited that love for sewing in my heart, and gave me inspiration to create again. So thanks again to the Dressmaker team for reminding me of my passion for this craft, and for providing a creative and cozy space for an old lady and a tired aged care worker to bond over ^-^
My mother is a seamstress, she's been sewing since she was ten years old and I've been watching her sew since before I was even capable of forming memories. I've found myself using her techniques and the information she's told me over the years in this game, I'm patterning dresses like my mother does, I'm picking fabric like I do with her, cooing over textures and colors like I'm in an actual fabric store with her. I actually *squealed* in delight when I saw burn-out velvet and startled both my mother and the dog. The best part of it all? My mom saw me playing the game, and she was interested! She's never really shown interest in my games beyond a curiosity of what I was doing, but with dressmaker? She wants to play it! She actually wants to play it!!!!! I connected with this game because of my mother and the love of dressmaking she gave me, and now I can connect this game with my mother because of the very same love. She may never seriously play another videogame but dressmaker has given us something to play together, and that means a lot to me.
I definitely would recommend this game to any artists, because it is such a fun way to design clothes without the hassle. Although I do wish to one day to be able to name my designs, instead of just letting my dresses be named off-the-rack dresses. Cause any designer would/should name their fits! It would also be great if I was able to sketch colors for the back of the dress, since the back is just as important as the front. Other than that this is probably the most coolest game I have ever invested in, thank you to the devlopers, creators, and designers of this game!
Suddenly I'm 12 again, playing a dress-up game online, gathering inspo for the dresses I plan to hand sew for my dolls. Life is good.... You know what, I'm turning 30 next week and this makes me wanna sew some of these dresses for myself. Loving this game so far, very creative and cozy. Can't stop playing.
