It was an intense game. I did like the story line. There were so many puzzles. I could have done with a few less puzzles. Some of the mechanics were challenging. I was using the mouse and keyboard. But if I can finish the game at 72 years old, many others can do it. They threw all the fighting toward the last. It was tiring but I did enjoy it.

This is a great AA game, clearly made with love. It plays a lot like "God of War (2018) at home" and I mean that as a compliment. I found that it had a good combo of puzzles and combat, with some light exploration for optional lore entries. It's fairly linear, which I am honestly coming to prefer over open-world checklist-type games as I get older. I never played this before the Enhanced Edition update but performance was solid and the graphics are beautiful (is Iceland really that pretty?). If you want a God of War-lite action-adventure game, check this out.

Maybe a little biased here... But my kid worked on the game so this was the push I needed to finally make a Steam account. So far enjoying the game. Having played most of my games in the late 90s and early 2000's I played the game on story mode, and so far I'm managing to make my way through this. And Kyrkjufell (the mountain in the background) deserves a reccomendation all on it's own

Yet Another AA Gem EDIT: They fixed the combat. Ryn's movement feels more natural, animations are both weightier and faster, and I actually want to parry now. We're not talking best-in-class; it's not suddenly a FromSoft game. But I don't think I would have dropped the difficulty if this had been the version I played, so it's an even heartier recommend from me now. This game does have a lot of problems; movement feels floaty, combat lacks weight and enemy variety (I dropped the difficulty to Story and never looked back), collectibles are kind of meaningless, and it's heavier than it should be, even for the visuals they're offering. There are also gonna be bugs, from major (HDR turned my entire screen rainbow) to minor (the 'you last saved at XX:XX PM' clock was always wrong, and never seemed to correspond with any clock, timezone, or setting that made sense). In a very clear sense, this is "we have God of War 2018 at home". So why am I recommending? Because the issues above, while meaningful, are functionally issues of presentation and resources. This is a small team, a young team, without a ton of money and time to polish and refine. Despite those limitations, the core of the game, the bones of it, are solid and rewarding. It's full of ideas, with clever puzzles and inventive combat techniques. Throwing people around in this game is more fun than in the Star Wars Jedi games, and there was always some new puzzle mechanic so the between-combat sections never overstayed their welcome. Additionally, the writing, if sometimes predictable, is solid, and the main performances are *excellent*, moving past the very stage-y quality of most video game voice acting to actually give the lines heft and subtlety. I'll be keeping an eye out for anything Aldís Amah Hamilton performs in next; she plays Ryn with an understatedness which so easily could have come off detached and annoying (see Aloy in HFW), but instead paints her as mature and morally serious. The core relationship between Ryn and Abram is wonderful, developing slowly and realistically over a bloatless runtime. The ups and downs of their relationship feel earned, both through writing and gameplay, which is too rare even in narrative-first Sony-type games like this one. Moreover, avoiding a huge pitfall of this genre, the game doesn't shove lore down your throat, instead letting you explore the world to the depth you want. And exploration is worth it, because the world the team has made is beautiful. There's definitely a few too many cave sections (and commenting on this in the dialogue doesn't absolve the sin). But there are vistas that'll impress, and impress even more once you realize you'll be moving through and climbing all over them. I've been playing a ton of really excellent indie games this year, and the closest comparisons I can come up with are games like Tainted Grail and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. It's been really rewarding, in a world of AAA slop, to see how new tech is enabling small teams to make solid AA games. We’ve seen that in Clair Obscur and Eriksholm and Hell Is Us, and this game belongs on that list. All of these games have jank, all of them make compromises, and all of them are absolutely, 100% worth your time and money. A rough diamond is still a diamond.

A solid if a little rough around the edges AA game that has a lot of soul and hearkens back to PS3 era adventure games. Puzzle design is definitely the strongest aspect with early game combat being the weakest. I hope the devs can expand the world they have built with a squeal that builds off of the stronger aspects of this game. People always complain about AAA being stale and wish for more AA size projects and then they complain whenever we get one and it does not match the scale or polish of a AAA. Give it a go if it looks good to you and support a smaller dev team. A good 7/10 experience.
