April 2026
El 39, developed by Bohemian Productions in collaboration with Ramiro Argente and Lucas Gomila, is a short-form psychological horror experience that thrives on subtlety and mood rather than spectacle. It begins with a premise that feels almost mundane: a young man leaving a disappointing social gathering late at night, trying to make his way home through the quiet streets of Buenos Aires. From that simple setup, the game carefully unravels a sense of unease, turning an ordinary situation into something increasingly disquieting. What makes it stand out is how grounded everything feels, as if the horror is less about external threats and more about internal tension slowly manifesting in the world around you. The atmosphere is the game’s most compelling asset. It captures the strange, vulnerable feeling of being alone in a city during the early hours, when familiar places start to feel unfamiliar. Streetlights cast uneven shadows, empty sidewalks stretch longer than they should, and the silence carries a weight that grows heavier with each passing moment. The game doesn’t rush to scare the player; instead, it allows discomfort to build naturally. Small environmental details and ambient sounds do much of the work, creating a persistent sense that something is off even when nothing overtly threatening is happening. This restrained approach makes the occasional bursts of tension far more effective. Visually, El 39 embraces a retro-inspired presentation that echoes older survival horror titles. The low-poly environments and slightly rough textures aren’t just stylistic choices—they actively contribute to the unease. The lack of visual clarity leaves room for doubt, making it harder to distinguish what’s real from what might be imagined. Lighting is used cleverly, often obscuring as much as it reveals, and the overall aesthetic enhances the dreamlike quality of the experience. It feels like stepping into a memory that’s beginning to distort, which aligns perfectly with the game’s psychological themes. The setting itself is another highlight. The depiction of Constitución is infused with cultural detail, giving the environment a strong sense of identity. It doesn’t feel like a generic urban map but rather a specific place with its own character. This authenticity adds depth to the experience, making the unfolding events feel more personal and believable. At the same time, the game occasionally introduces moments of odd humor or surreal touches, preventing the tone from becoming too one-note. This balance between grounded realism and slight absurdity gives the narrative a distinctive flavor. In terms of gameplay, El 39 keeps things simple and focused. It follows a linear, exploration-driven structure with light interaction and minimal puzzle elements. There are no complex systems to manage, and the player’s role is primarily to observe, move forward, and piece together what’s happening. This design choice reinforces the narrative and atmospheric focus, but it also limits interactivity. Players looking for deeper mechanics or branching paths may find the experience too constrained, as it is clearly designed to be experienced rather than actively shaped. The game’s brevity is both a strength and a limitation. It can be completed in a relatively short time, making it easy to finish in one sitting. This concise runtime ensures that the pacing remains tight and that the atmosphere doesn’t lose its impact. However, it also means that some ideas feel underexplored, and just as the experience begins to fully settle in, it reaches its conclusion. There’s a sense that the game could have expanded further without losing its focus, but it ultimately chooses to remain compact. Despite its short length and minimalistic design, El 39 leaves a lasting impression. It succeeds in capturing a very specific emotional state—the quiet anxiety of isolation and the creeping fear that something isn’t quite right. It doesn’t rely on excessive scares or complex storytelling; instead, it trusts its atmosphere and setting to carry the experience. For players who appreciate slow-burning psychological horror and culturally grounded narratives, it offers something distinctive and memorable, even if it doesn’t aim for long-term engagement or replayability.

A very short but engaging narrative game with beautiful recreations of Buenos Aires cityscapes. I'd recommend it just for the ambiance, but there's plenty of humor and winks to boot. Here's to plenty more of interesting games from Bohemian Productions!

100% Decepcionado de lo corto que es. Un 10 la estética, e igualmente banco haberlo pagado para soportar al dev, pero es extremadamente corto. Ni siquiera me dió tiempo a terminar de sumergirme en el juego.
