火佛修一心薩嘸哞 Incantation is a game adaptation of the film of the same name, which is also one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The game stays remarkably faithful to the original, with plenty of Easter eggs and references for fans to pick out. More importantly, both the story and atmosphere are genuinely well done , despite only being around 4 hours long, the game manages to capture the spirit of the original film surprisingly well, while the voice acting adds quite a bit to the overall experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3718152881 That said, the game is not perfect. Many of its puzzles are fairly mediocre, often feeling more like obligatory obstacles designed to move the story forward rather than meaningful gameplay challenges. The controls also leave something to be desired, with generally stiff interaction feedback and several sections that clearly could have used more polish. This is especially noticeable in one of the sections near the end, where you have to repeatedly lure the enemy chasing you into the burning barrels in order to kill him. As a sequence that should serve as both a gameplay and emotional climax, its poor controls and underwhelming level design unfortunately make the whole thing fall rather flat. Overall, I can say Incantation is a pretty solid movie adaptation, with its strengths and weaknesses laid out pretty clearly. But if you're a fan of the original film—or Taiwanese folk horror in general—this is a game that's absolutely worth checking out. Also, a little note about the title: “火佛修一心薩嘸哞” is actually the central chant that runs throughout both the movie and the game. I’m not gonna explain what it means because that’d be a pretty huge spoiler, but I absolutely love how the director spends basically the entire movie trying to trick you into reading the damn thing out loud lmao. It’s such a ridiculous and clever idea, and honestly one of my favorite things about the movie. 7.5/10
A cute little addition to the movie. Gameplay is basically RE/SH, but hardly any action, just some stealth (yuk, at least, you can just run through these parts), a couple of chases, and a single boss fight which feels a bit off without a dodge button. The story is pretty engaging and doesn't get tiring during the 5 hours that this game takes to beat. Puzzles are not overly annoying, except the last puzzle box. Overall, well worth the money.
Loved this game, definitely recommend to anyone who likes slower-paced psychological horror games. I was a little hesitant going in because I don't mind a good chase or two but I find it a bit annoying when these kind of games have an over-reliance on enemies (some find it boring without a bunch of enemies, but me- i like a good setting, story, lore etc.). I was pleasantly surprised, very creepy and the enemy encounters weren't too difficult.
