I try to keep it short. Background for my gaming: Endless Legend 600h, Endless Space 700h, Civ6 700, Stellaris 1k, etc. What do I enjoy about playing 4x games: The building up, the lore, the exploring, multiple ways to win, multiple ways to go in a strategic way, get immersed in the world and a fighting system, that is either short and straightforward or offers another layer of complexity. I hesitated buying the EA version because usually they suck quite a bit and are rushed so devs can sell DLCs (I am completely burned by Paradox, which is why I never buy a game from them that's not at least 5 years old - Crusader Kings III on discount with all DLCs costs right now around 220€ on Steam - wtf?). Why do I right this: Because just yesterday I bought the game (it's holiday season, I am sick and can't see nobody :D) and tried it. Fast forward 36 hours and I played 15h that game. What the hell? I got totally immersed in the beautiful world, the multitude of options, the fightings concept (which I personally really enjoyed) etc. Even in EA it's multi times better than the original, which I also enjoyed quite a lot. Everything worked fine for me, nothing bugged, no problems whatsoever. Sure, some pacing seems suboptiomal (like I couldn't keep up with what I am able to build while trying to fight of other empires and had 50 options what to do next with my cities), but it's EA. And for an EA game I am completely stunned by what I got delivered. Players new to the Endless Legend world might get a bit overwhelmed at the beginning. Just stick with it. There is no problem starting over, when you realized you made crucial mistakes. It makes fun. REAL FUN. For older Endless Legend players: YOU WILL LOVE IT. You'll hate the time you will want to spend on the game. I will keep that review updated, maybe my opinion or further developments will change it a bit, but right now it's all I hoped for and way above.

Strongly recommend this 4X game. It's absolutely lovely, and I look forward to playing more. Two things in particular make it click for me - Tidefall, and the playable factions. Tidefall coming periodically and revealing new tiles means that map exploration (which is one of the most enjoyable aspects of 4X games) is a constantly refreshing experience. Most games become a 3X or 2X somewhere around half way through, when exploration and expansion are no longer things you can do. Unlike them, EL2 remains 4X until the very end, which is just wonderful. The factions are unique and incredibly fun. I'm very much a creature of habit - usually, I do a flavour check on the available races/nations/you name it, and I can pretty much spot THE ONE straight away. I'll then spend most of my time playing with that one combination or faction. Unexpectedly, I've played runs with almost all factions in EL2 and had a blast with each of them. They felt different, and their own gameplay loop wasn't obfuscated to me. I suspect there was great care put into how the different factions play out throughout a game, as I feel nudged in the "right" direction without being constrained. Anyway - strongly recommend picking this up. Also, soundtrack is stellar.

It's been a while since I've played a game that so perfectly encapsulates the urge to play "just one more turn..." Eventually, some corner of my brain jerks away from the empire of bugmen or animated suits of armour or robotic coral I've been commanding and I realize that it's so late it's actually early . There's something compelling about the steady iteration, the gradual progression to your goals, and EL2 nails it perfectly. As is to be expected from an Endless title, the art direction, the soundtrack, and the environmental art are also all superb. Overall, the game is a step forward in many respects in comparison to Endless Legend 1, and even Endless Space 2. Formerly convoluted systems are streamlined, yet room for complexity still remains, and with falling sea levels being a central mechanic, you're always preparing to capitalize on new territory. It's an interesting curveball that I cannot recall seeing other 4X titles play with, and ensures that desirable, unclaimed territory remains an important element even in the late-game. That very same shifting map, however, can also feel arbitrarily punishing at times. Part of this is simply a skill issue, but it can be difficult for the player to choose between settling territory (For which you have a cap and an increasing resource cost, thereby incentizing being careful with your expansion) on available land or rolling the dice and hoping that the tidefall reveals something better. I, for one, feel like an idiot when I opt to settle territory that's perfectly fine, only to discover that literal eden has just been unveiled next door and I don't have the necessary moving vans to capitalize. Where the game currently falls short isn't in the bones of the gameplay itself, however, but the narrative - both in terms of dialogue snippets or quest descriptions, and how the overarching plot is presented. Amplitude has certainly acknowledged the former, and seems very intent on improving it, but the latter feels somewhat bland and might be harder to remedy. Conclusions to my campaigns have, thus far, felt somewhat abrupt, and the ending cinematics to crown it all off are quite perfunctory. Even with the above faults, it must be repeated that the EL2 is engaging, intriguing, and - as an added boon - runs remarkably well, which is sadly noteworthy in this day and age. Ultimately, reviewing a game that is still in early access is like building on quicksand, but Amplitude deserves recognition for what they've built thus far, and for the trajectory the game's development seems to be on.

WARNING: Long rant ahead Let me start by saying that mechanically and graphically this game is amazing. It takes everything that was great about EL1 and improves upon it and ads its own additions such as the map monsoons/tides which is such a fantastic mechanic. I absolutely recommend this game for everyone who is a fan of EL1. Now for my rant: The dialog so far in this game has been awful and cringey. it got so bad that I had to put down playing it and havnt played it in a few days because my immersion was ripped apart. Firstly, the narator for the new planet this game takes place on, and the narrator for the Kin faction both sound super bored and monotone and only showed up for the paycheck and left. my drive to play the game was already hampered from the start. My 2nd favorite faction from EL1, the Necrophage, atleast have probably one of the most amazing voice actors and he was so good it hyped me up to devour the world in the name of the hive.....then the event/questline dialog began. The beginning of my immersion ripping was 30 minutes into Necrophage when my hero, after destroying a settlement and eating the population, as you do as giant man eating bugs, began having a mental crisis as he whined about hearing the screaming and could feel the pain of my enemies, and even Necrophage Prime was like "The heck are you on about." and so you can "heal" the hero and keep him and stop his whining or let him go and lose an entire hero! What the heck is going on!? it happened again after I took another settlement with just as cringey and immersion ripping dialog. this comes with some of the best mechanics for how a all devouring swarm should play in these kind of games. my final straw was when one of my 20ft tall, 8 legged man eating hero asked another hero to borrow money to pay a debt back that he had gotten from losing money gambling! what! where the heck are these bugs going to gamble? why are they even having this cringey af dialog. They are born and raised to eat! I wouldnt be as upset if there was some explanation for these actions but there isnt. and the dialog for the necrophage goes between broken warhammer 40k Orc or 1940s gentlemens club and that also is jarring. Also the lore for the world and what actually happened between EL1 and EL2 is basically non-existent. Why are these factions here? what happened to Auriga? why are some of the same factions in this one but not others from the previous game? If any DEVS read this, please fix the dialog and possibly voice actors (except Necrophage va, pay him more). Its is super jarring for all the factions and makes it hard to immerse yourself with any given faction when some of them sound like 18 year old tik tok influencers. Also not everyone has to be misunderstood "villains" or true neutral. This isnt the real world, and Disneyfying these factions is not the move.and add more lore into the game with better explanations as to WHY things are or happen. Going from the masterpiece of EL1 to this in regards to story is night and day, with EL1 being leagues ahead.

Amazing game. Runs great, great art. The quests are more interesting than EL1. I really like the direction Amplitude has taken after leaving Sega. It seems like they have followed Sid Meier's rule of thirds: one-third traditional gameplay, one-third is improved from the last version, and one-third is brand new. The new factions, even the limited 5 ones you get in EA are all very different and interesting. If you like ANY kind of 4x, you will like this game! I really hope this means we will be getting an Endless Space 3!
