I just started out and I have to say. This may be the best gamer in the series on Steam so far. (fingers crossed for a port of EO4!) The difficulty is balanced a lot better so far, all new classes that borrow some things from the first two but give enough of a spin to it to be interesting. *summons a pet cow to end the review*

For the purchase price, you get: + A choose-your-own-party dungeon crawling experience; + Integrated cartography mechanics; + A sailing minigame; + A lovely soundtrack; + Fantastic artwork; + Simple controls; + Rich worldbuilding; + And hours and hours of fun (including postgame content!). Potential detractors might be: - Absolutely brutal difficulty (although this can be changed to be a cakewalk); - Getting all the classes requires at least two playthroughs (though New Game+ exists); - The game is a huge grinding timesink (especially on higher difficulties); - Changing/modifying party members requires time and resources; - The cartography controls are clunky (the original game made use of the Nintendo DS dual screens and was objectively better for it); - The in-game font is atrocious (though this can be fixed with mods). Long-Form Review: I am no stranger to Etrian Odyssey (I started with EO4), and I absolutely adore this series, as it's a comfortable blanket of potential. The general gist with EO is that you can build your own party from a series of classes, then take them on an adventure while manually mapping each floor of the dungeon you traverse. The plot is reasonably engaging, but the hooks to these games are the gameplay and the cartography elements. Out of the three titles available on Steam at the time of this writing (EO 1, 2, and 3), this one is by far and away the best given that EO3 introduced new mechanics (such as subclassing and weapon crafting) which broadened the horizons of customization, min-maxing, and varied builds and veered away from the cookie-cutter party compositions of previous titles. There's also an overworld minigame of sorts that involves sailing, but true overworld exploration doesn't happen until EO4 (and is then never seen again). This game was originally a Nintendo DS title, and like a certain amount of niche titles of the era, the difficulty was cranked up to be absolutely brutal by this era's standards. The remaster has introduced two easier difficulties (Normal and the ridiculously simple Picnic), but if you want the authentic experience, play on Expert. Even on Normal, however, you will need to build your party to have answers to problems that enemies pose, and if you don't have those, your only reward and basis for growth is death. Can't cleanse or block status effect spam? You're dead. Can't keep a boss's limbs perpetually bound to keep them from using the party-wide damage skill? You're dead. Can't dodge the roaming bosses that show up throughout the dungeon floors? Guess what, you're dead. You'll even die to random mobs if you have just one unfortunate encounter, and you'll need to prepare to prevent it, because the game is going to pull no punches right from the start. There are ways to respec your party and even swap characters out, but understand that respecing costs a character five entire levels, you will need to train up any new characters from level one, and XP is a precious resource: any XP you get through battles is split among your entire party and will take time - lots of time - to grind back. Money, too, will always be tight given that costs for new armor and weapons will massively increase over time, and you are going to have to hash out what you want to take with you for emergencies or otherwise. This game encourages deep thinking, party crafting, and planning, and although that's a turn-off for some, I wouldn't have it any other way. That being said, this game definitely isn't worth full price, especially with Denuvo attached to it to tell you that you can't play your own games if you aren't connected to the Internet for long enough. Buy it on sale and enjoy the experience so that Atlus can release the rest of the series for us!

This game is good for a very specific experience. I'd recommend skipping EO1 and EO2 to start here. If you played old school dungeon crawlers like Wizardry, this is an anime descendant. If you like the thought of charting out your own map, finding all the shortcuts, and cracking the code, this is a great game. If you are willing to attack an actively hostile combat system, this is a great game. About combat: Combat pulls zero punches. You can and will have a single unlucky random encounter wipe you. FOE's must be avoided or you die. You must have answers to boss specials (like AOE elemental attacks or status effect spam) or you die. If your build is wrong, the only feedback you get is death. This is a game that lays a set of tools in front of you, says "have fun", and then swings a hammer for your head. The big change with EO3 is the introduction of subclassing. While EO1 and EO2 basically had cookie cutter answers, this game has a plethora of build variety. For example, you can pair your tank + ninja and then use ninja's clone to get two tanks! You can pair your Zodiac mage with Gladiator and build a charge-meteor build to bludgeon your foes to death. This really opens up the tactical space. Again, though, the onus to build well is on you. If you pick a weak choice, you'll just die over and over until you rest your adventurer and build better. Story: Fairly minimal. This entry has a forking path with the expectation that you'll do a replay to see the other side. (Each side unlocks one new class) Graphics: Anime cutesy and somewhat at odds with the vibe of the story. If you take this game entirely blind, it will probably take you 60 to 80 hours. My personal recommendation would be: (1) clear each floor blind, (2) use a guide to double check your work, (3) use the EO wiki or gamefaqs to get ideas on viable builds.

This is the best game out of the trilogy, it has more of a focus on story this time around. There are less maps overall in this game, but the quality of them are far better than the previous games, the puzzles are very fun to map out and the game is well balanced

Unlike EO 1 & 2 HD, EO 3 HD is the best version of EO3. It's the only one that didn't receive an 'Untold' remaster/remake It really would have been better to just port the 'Untold' games instead and make an EO Untold 3. I have a gut feeling they might, which is why I'm not confident in my purchase of the OGs These games are also insanely over priced. Even after spending $16 via discount, I still feel a bit scammed. These games should be $10 base price These aren't even the best versions of the games, either. Seeing HD ports of the originals instead of the 'Untold' remasters/remakes just makes me uncertain if I should bother with these or wait for the potential 'Untold' ports. Why port these ones and not the 'Untold' remakes? They're so much better in erry possible way! The Untold remasters/remakes literally have the OG game in it along with the new Untold story campaign. You can literally pick between the 2 in the main menu! Now there are definitely some games I would feel confident dumping money on if they were also ported to PC, and that's Soulhackers 1 (3DS version), Strange Journey Redux, SMT 4/Apocalypse, Devil Survivor 1/2, and Persona Q & Q2. Please make it happen. I wanna play those on my SD OLED so badly
