Dec. 2025
I got into the series around 2018 and 100%'d the DS version of Etrian Odyssey 3, so I 100%'d the HD remaster on Expert difficulty. 210 hours in-game time, 80 to beat the first ending. I still really love this game. Of the HD trilogy, it's the best one to get into for newcomers: great class diversity, excellent music, interesting enemy formations, memorable NPCs, the introduction of subclassing, etc. I may love EO1 a ton, but even I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. That said, if any of the 3DS games ever get rereleased in the future then check them out first. They might be more up your alley. If there's anything negative I can say about this game at all, it's that clearing all three routes using New Game+ and getting everything registered in all the compendiums caused burnout a couple times along the way. Definitely take breaks if you're gonna aim for that. General tips for newbies: -Buffs/debuffs are your friend! -Status ailments are actually useful in this franchise! -Know when to retreat. The general gameplay loop is pushing your party until you're out of resources, then returning to town. Don't overexert yourself into earning a game over screen. -Specialize your team, but early on don't spend so many points into one skill that your TP runs out too fast. -Make a gathering party, even if it's just a farmer plus your unused classes. You'll get a bunch of materials and money for gearing up your main group. -If you get stuck, there are plenty of resources on the web. Skill simulators with data for each rank (really useful for party building late game), wikis, guides, maps, LP archives, and more. Since I did this in my EO2 review, here are some things that were introduced in the original EO3: -Quests finally give exp upon completion. Hooray! -Sea exploration. Take away five floors from the main dungeon (boo) to add a minigame with many bosses to challenge during progression (yay). These bosses are the only multiplayer content in EO3 (if that's still a thing, never tried it myself), but you can solo them just fine. -Killing three specific superbosses raises the level cap by 10 each. No more retiring to get +1 level cap! -Subclassing was introduced, allowing for some truly broken combinations. -Multiple endings, two normal and one true. New Game+ was added as a result. -Tents to rest at campsites in the labyrinth. -Sleeping at the inn goes to either 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. Silly that this needs to be said at all, but it's an improvement from EO1 and EO2. P.S. Screw the Overlord Squid.

It has the best in-game map making functionality I've experienced in a game (I've also never played an EO game before this one). I want to like Eye of the Beholder, but my options are "grab some graph paper like it's the 90's and take 6 hours to clear the first floor" or "download a mod that does all the mapping for you, which takes away some of the excitement of exploration". This game strikes the perfect middle ground of making your own map, but doing so in the game, where I can just move my mouse a lil bit instead of grabbing a whole ass notebook with literally every step I take. I wish more dungeon crawlers were like this. The mouse and keyboard controls are incredible frankly; so incredible, that I don't recommend using a controller. Playing this with a controller feels like playing Minecraft with a controller. The in-game battle sprites actively look bad, due to the low-poly backgrounds clashing with sticker-like HD sprites. I wish there was an option to use the OG sprites because the game would probably look a lot more consistent. It's overpriced as all hell for what it is, don't spend 40 dollars on a digital copy of a DS game in 2025. Get it on sale. But like, on sale, yea it's worth it. I really wish more dungeon crawlers existed with this level of in-game map functionality. Making your own maps in this game is actually FUN.

After a rather disappointing 2nd game, Etrian Odyssey 3 is finally where ATLUS hit it right. EO3 is a very punishing and hard game that when things click, feels very satisfying to complete. + Plenty of classes to play around with, all of them range from decent to really good. + Team building and synergy are finally a real thing that massively rewards you. + Subclassing further adds a layer to this, although the good choices here end up rather overpowered compared to the rest. + Creating maps is done decently well, they tried their best with the lack of a second screen. (NDS game) + OST is phenomenal as usual + Artwork looks great +/- Story is okay, never the real focus of the game but at least this games provides something interesting. +/- Sailing is a decent change of pace but ultimately more flavor than something substantial. - lack of info on the skills is quite frankly the biggest issue with this game (withholding vital information from your players is just not good or fun) - resetting skill points costs levels, coupled with the lack of skill info it tends to feel like you get punished for something out of your control - the f o n t SUCKS

!!! Gamer Waring !!! Gamer Warning !!! This game can be VERY punishing when it comes to character building and progression. (Especially if you're planning on playing on expert difficulty.) I would actually recommend you take the time to do some research and plan out your builds in advance, otherwise you risk sharing the same fate as this poor soul, who had to realise that his run was unsalvageable 40 hours in :')

I just started out and I have to say. This may be the best gamer in the series on Steam so far. (fingers crossed for a port of EO4!) The difficulty is balanced a lot better so far, all new classes that borrow some things from the first two but give enough of a spin to it to be interesting. *summons a pet cow to end the review*
