As I write this review, the next title (EU5) is slated to release tomorrow and I felt compelled to write a review and pay homage to the greatest strategy game of all time before I must say goodbye. This game is so much more than just a map painter, it's a an escape to a different world, a glimpse from a time long gone, a strategy sandbox where you can write history in so many different ways. For many of us, the year 1444 has become as familiar as our own birthdays, the borders and rulers of that frozen moment etched into memory like a second language. This game has taught me more about history and geography than any college class or textbook ever could. There’s such a simple joy in choosing a nation and immersing yourself in its story, roleplaying its triumphs and disasters, navigating diplomacy, warfare, and economics in a living, reactive world. Sure, it has a significant learning curve, but it incorporates the best systems and ideas about economics, warfare, and diplomacy from similar games into one massive sandbox. Even after 4000+ hours, every campaign is different, a unique story told through the lens of ambition, power, and chance. A single decision can ripple through centuries. Truly a game with a unlimited replayability. The multiplayer is another aspect entirely. I could write pages more on that, but to keep brief, they were the fondest gaming memories I'll have. No other game has continued to captivate me 10 years later. It's truly a masterpiece in its genre. 10/10

As Europa Universalis V is on the horizon, I want to leave a review for a game that I have enjoyed for almost a decade at this point. What can I say about EUIV? I can say it is by far my favorite game of all time, at least that I have ever played. I started playing this game when I was 15 years old, I am now 25. It has sparked my love for the early modern era of history and provided thousands of hours of entertainment. In regards to game play, I feel I am not the best to cover the learning curve, I have learned this game over the span of a decade, very slowly. I can say, it is outdated, naturally. It has no regard for population growth other than mana-based development. The military is easy to control but does have a learning curve in regards to combat engagement modifiers. The trade system I have heard from others is difficult to grasp, however I found it rather easy to understand. As time has gone on, updates have made nations outside of Europe viable and even stronger than the European powers if you play "correctly" (Mughals and Mamluks especially) which is great because Europe, despite being the center focus of this title, can get very boring. I would absolutely recommend this game, however I dont know that I recommend playing it without the DLC, which I have bought gradually as they came out since 2017. As an up front cost, I would probably never touch it. I think it is worth it, but I am incredibly biased and recognize that not everyone will have the same affinity to this title as I do!

I've played this game for 100's of hours, never mastered it, but had fun the whole time. If you like complex historical strategy games focused on this time period EUIV is probably the best one out there.

In my opinion, this is the king of map staring games. I now struggle to remember a time in which I did not eagerly allow this game to burn itself into my retinas. My religion, my career, my fundamental sense of self, all of them came and went while my addiction to this game remained. Is the game perfect? No. Is the game simple to learn? I hardly remember. The curious child who found this game is lost to the sands of time. If I so much as see the number 1444 I begin to think of hours of scrolling through menus with a fondness that can only be described as Stockholm Syndrome... ah... Stockholm... perhaps I should do a Sweden run... Play at your own risk. You'll either grow tired of the concept soon and rid yourself of it, or you will join the rest of us. Or you could develop a healthy relationship with it, I'm not telling you how to live your life.
