"At the end of the dream, we see another dream." Never thought I'd see this game on Steam, let alone translated... It's been months and it still feels like a dream. A dream made manifest by the undying love and cooperation of Sanbondo and the fans. Very rarely I call something a masterpiece and a true labor of love, but Fantasy Maiden Wars is precisely just that. From top to bottom. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, it's the best Touhou Project fan game ever made and one of the best games that I've ever played. The amount of love and effort poured into it from such a small doujin circle is unimaginable. It's a love letter for both Super Robot Wars fans and Touhou Project fans, but Gensokyo welcomes all people. Combine the SWR gameplay formula and the Touhou Project universe and the end result is a visual spectacle. The game never once felt unfair because every unit and strategy is viable, unless it's Route B Chapter 72 on Lunatic difficulty ... If you want to make a character like Daiyousei to hit harder than giant Suika and tank a Death Star beam to the face and walk away with just a few scratches, then go ahead because it's very much possible! As for the music, I cannot sing enough praise to cobu and Ibiza for making hands down THE BEST Touhou arrangements that I've ever heard. Talk about soul music! I love their music so much that I made Left 4 Dead 2 [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3391688190]music addons just to hear more of that cobu and Ibiza goodness in another game at max volume. As for the story, I'm just gonna say that this game played with my heartstrings harder than Lunasa playing her violin. From funny moments to acts of heroism, defiance and redemption to moments of sorrow and tears. A very satisfying story with equally satisfying endings. Oh and of course, the new girls. I'll keep it short and sweet, I freaking LOVE them! For me, Fantasy Maiden Wars is an innocent treasure and it has a special place in my heart. I doubt I'll see anything like it ever again. Normally I'd wish to see more of it in the future, but considering the tremendous efforts made by Sanbondo and the translation team to bring it to the western audience... I doubt that will ever happen. Sometimes less is enough. I am satisfied with just this game and I will remember it fondly for as long as I have days. Thank you Sanbondo for making this wonderful game and special shoutout to the translation team because none of this would have ever happened without your incredible efforts.

One thing to say before you buy this game: It is a collection of 4 different fangames essentially packaged together in one product for the first time, and translated to English. It is VERY long. This game is genuinely the longest I have spent on a single-play campaign in my entire life. All of my 136 hours were spent getting through it, no completion or second playthroughs. I think this is very important to know going into it, as I GREATLY underestimated how long it was going to take to beat. With that out of the way, let me get onto the review. This is the best tactics game I have ever played. Notably, I have only played 4-5 other games in the genre, but still. This game's combat is extremely in-depth and difficult, to the point where multiple single maps can take over 2 and a half hours. I think that is very fun. The game does not do too good of a job of explaining itself once you are in it, but its basically just a regular tactics game with usable 'spirits' that augment everything from hit chance, evasion change to damage, which makes for a very addicting gameplay loop. The game goes from what I would describe as pretty easy all the way up to very hard as it continues onwards, but it makes sure to give you time enough to get used to it before it starts getting difficult, which I think is really great. As far as story goes, its pretty much your standard touhou fangame fare, with it containing essentially every mainline game's plot from 6-12 including characters from 4 and 5 as fun little bonuses. While the game does contain some of its own plot, it really only comes into play in the last half of the last game, which I honestly didn't really mind. I think that even if you have played all of those games already, like I had, you will find enjoyment anyway, and I think that if you haven't its a great starting point on introducing all of the characters, which I feel is sometimes lacking in touhou fangames. I honestly think this is my favourite retelling of the different touhou games' plot, which is saying a lot. I think that the highlight of this games' story is for sure the original content present at the end, which does not feel out of place at all and had been appropriately building up throughout the entire story. Overall, cannot recommend this game enough, the only thing I will say is that a lot of the reviews saying you can customise every character however you want are not wrong necessarily, but I do not think customisation is as great as they try to make out unfortunately, but I do think think that which is present is very fun. Engage with this game if you like touhou or tactics games! You will have a great time.

EDIT 12/7/25: Yeah I finished it. Amazing game. Not a single dull hour. If you like SRPGs, Touhou, both, or neither, buy it and play it. You owe it to yourself if you likk anything that's good. Just buy it. That's all. As of speaking, I've only finished Scarlet Arc, but if the rest of the game maintains this quality, then consider me in love. I'm writing this review because I'm deeply confident in what it is right now. The tactical gameplay is an excellent adaptation of the Super Robot Wars titles (from the few I've personally played, anyway), while incorporating mechanics unique to Touhou; "danmaku" here is more like a field debuff sprayed from enemies that requires you to adjust your units to accommodate for, and spellcards mark various patterns on the map that force you to rethink your positioning or get hit by something nasty. The different units all have a plethora of powerful skills, cool animations, and ways to customize them to serve your purposes. Bosses and missions are fun and often contain cool gameplay and narrative setpieces that keep you on your toes and prevent you from getting too complacent. The writing, for me, was the big surprise though, because I wasn't sure what to expect going into it, especially from a fan project. My only gripe, if at all, is with some rough spots in the translation. There's more than a few typos and some awkward formatting here and there, but it's still superb about 95% of the time. What we have here seems to be a retelling of the early Windows games (starting from EoSD); the same bones of a plot, but various other faces and storylines are weaved in and out, and intriguing traits and elements that were originally only lightly touched upon in the series' lore (such as Sakuya's misanthropy) are written as more prominent parts of the characters they belonged to. This creates a much denser take on the original titles that far better serves this narrative-centered style of game. Perhaps most remarkably, it feels written in a way that is both comfortable for both newcomers and veterans; the game explains a number of setting specifics in a fairly organic manner and introduces you well to each character, making it a surprisingly decent introduction to the Touhou Project universe for the most part as long as you can put up with some portrayals being altered to suit this story and an occasional "remember me?" (and even then you can most certainly get the context). For longtime series fans, however, you get a plot that is just faithful enough to the world and cast (at least, with the information the game had to go off of at the time) but also does enough shaking-up that you'll have fun being surprised by all the divergences. Strong, clever, and often humorous writing highlights the cast's disparate personalities in such a way that even as a longtime fan you might come to love characters you didn't think about much before. The whole thing is packed with allusions, details from canon and clever repurposing, and just feels brimming with love for Touhou's extensive history. These two elements combined together, alongside one very tasty elephant in the room (the OST, much like Super Robot Wars, consists of every single character having arrangements of their theme which plays when they fight, and it's all bangers), make for a genuinely excellent strategy RPG that, at least as of right now, I can recommend to basically anyone who likes or is interested in Touhou, SRPGs, or both.

I didn't want to write a review until I was done with my first playthrough, but after I found out that DotSD is easier than the original releases that I played many years ago I chose to do my first semi-blind "wait how does this game go again" playthrough on Lunatic difficulty, so here I am 290 hours later... Fantasy Maiden Wars is the greatest game ever made. Every individual part of it is incredible (but especially the gameplay and the soundtrack) and even after hundreds of hours I'm still waking up and thinking "man I can't wait until I'm done with work so I can play some more FMW", and reading every single glossary entry as I unlock them, and watching some of the optional combat animations (when dramatically appopriate) and getting out of my chair to mime out shooting giant laser beams with my units. As a packaged rerelease of four games, it's astonishingly long and full of content but there's also three very clearly defined points to take a break, for anyone who gets overwhelmed and doesn't have the infinite appetite for FMW that I have. I think any person could love this game. If you don't know anything about Touhou then it will make you love Touhou and if you don't know anything about Strategy RPGs then it will make you love SRPGs.
