Only played it for a few hours but loved the game so far. I've played the Og versions of fatal frame 1 and 2 on ps2 in my early teens, and I'm so not disappointed with the remake of this one. The gameplay is smooth; different cam/lenses for different fatal frames, also love that the game isn't first pers. view. The different characters and sides of the story are really cool, and some ghosts are tricky so it's a lot of fun. I honestly can't wait to continue playing ! ദ്ദി（• ˕ •マ.ᐟ
An immediate (and one of very few) downsides to this port is that its coming from the Wii U version of the game, so the keyboard controls are incredibly strange. Ex: 'a', 'd', 'h', and ';' keys are how you look around, 'J' is to open the map, 'C' is to run, 'i' is to open the camera, 'tab' and 'e' adjust the lens, 'o' is to shoot it, etc. - so you're literally all over the keyboard constantly. Just feels very clunky, but once you get used to it, it's.... alright, I guess. Only really frustrating part I had was trying to spin quickly to keep up with the ghosts. You are SO slow using mouse & keyboard that it does hinder the gameplay. At Drop 4, I did switch to using a ps5 controller which was IMMEDIATELY and IMMENSELY better to navigate. I generally do way worse with controllers, but this was a god send. PlayStation controllers are actually incompatible with the game, so it'll give you Xbox prompts, but you do have several options to work around that if you need to. There are several different mods available at different places (Last one updated looks like it's on Nexus), but I personally chose not to use mods as the devs have a conversion map on their official website just for this game, which I'll include for you here : https://www.koeitecmoamerica.com/manual/fatalframe-mobw/en/2300.html They also really had a thing for making the girls fall in water (it is Maiden of the Black WATER, after all. I'm not sure if the other games have it as bad as this) so you can see through their clothes. Which is immediately apparent, even in the prologue. They put a ton of effort into just seeing the clasp of their bra through their shirts. There's even a bathing suit skin where they're wearing a white t-shirt on top, with the purpose of getting the character wet so you can see through it. Super NOT subtle, lol. They did remove the Japan exclusive Wii U skins though, so the frilly maid bikinis are gone. If you absolutely can't live without that, there are guides on Steam that show you how to reimplement them lolol, as well as for the Samus and Zelda skins that the American version brought. But fear not, gooners- the jiggle physics are also nuts. It literally applies to nothing at all on the girls except their boobs (and every character is stacked). Sometimes they're at a standstill, and other times (mainly when a character opens a door or phases to a new area), them thangs are shaking up and down like they're spring loaded, even if the character is standing perfectly still. It's pretty odd, but considering time, origin, and model of the game, I expected there to be something like that. It's not too egregious, and it's easy to overlook. For celebrating it's 24th anniversary as of '26, the games story is still super unique and really interesting, there's no other franchise that feels like this. And this version, the '21 remaster, absolutely nailed it visually, updating the shadows and textures while still keeping the retro feel to it. Maybe I'm nostalgic, but spooky games just don't feel like this anymore, where it's less about jump scares and dark rooms, and more about building feelings of dread. Sure, the ghosts can be creepy, but the real selling point is the characters and the backstories they're given. I was caught by surprise so many times already. Flashbacks to group suicides, being trapped in boxes, pulled into deep water by long black hair, etc - the horror has a very Japanese feel to it, borrowing a lot of inspiration from classic Yokai. Super well done, and really intriguing. Sometimes the Drops / chapters do feel a bit drawn out, with each one taking roughly an hour or so, but once you get immersed in the story, it goes by pretty fast. You do have to rely on auto saves unless you complete the drop though, so that could be frustrating if you didn't allocate enough time. The cutscenes are really beautiful and gripping though, and as a person who normally looks forward to the gameplay more, I was really invested in the cutscenes. I was genuinely eager to make it to the next batch of the plot. I really, really, REALLY hope that the Fatal Frame 2 remake they just released does well enough that we can potentially see the other games make it to Steam. As of right now Fatal Frame 1, 2 (non- 2026 remake version), and 3 are currently only playable through the ps3 or by emulating them, which is a shame. The devs did say they were interested in remastering and / or remaking them if they get enough interest!! I did play this without playing 1-3 though, and was able to follow along just fine, so don't let that hold you back. I couldn't recommend this enough, it's a super fun time. It was a great entry into the series!
Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water brings this classic Japanese horror into the modern era, focusing on a damp, dark, and melancholic atmosphere. This is what attracted me to this franchise, as it relates to J-Horror genres (such as The Ring, Ju-On, Sadako, and Teketeke). The unique Camera Obscura mechanic, with responsive controls, provides a unique experience in maintaining distance from approaching entities. The LB-RB mechanic also provides a satisfying fatal shot position. Furthermore, the Overwhelming Atmosphere Mount Hikami feels very alive with eeriness. The "wet" effect on characters isn't just visual; the Wetness Gauge mechanic makes them more vulnerable to ghost attacks but also increases their attack power. It's an interesting "risk-versus-reward" element. The emotional story is also a plus, splitting the story between several protagonists: Ren Hojo, Miu Hinasaki, and Yuri Kozukata, with a narrative that focuses on trauma, sacrifice, and ancient rituals. Again, the downsides are not far from the character movement, which can sometimes feel a bit clunky, typical of classic horror games. And of course, the repetition. Some locations are visited multiple times by different characters, which may feel a bit repetitive for me personally, and certainly for some people. Hopefully, Koei Tecmo will continue to develop this franchise with new series or remakes in the future, as they did this year with the release of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly last March 💯
