Two Brits and a Canadian choose violence in a modern mash up of the OG Streets of Rage and Final Fight. Lots of fun even though there isn't lots of replay to go along with it. The pixel art is great, and the moves can get technical if taking the time to learn how they combo together. If a DLC or a sequel drops, I'll be picking it up for sure.
Have 20 hours on this game on another platform, got it 75% off then and thought it deserved a full purchase. This became one of my favourite indie, action, and beat'em up games. I just really like the speed and intensity of the gameplay compared to pretty much every classic arcade beat'em up I've tried. It's not a perfect game, but nothing else feels like it: -Has an up/down dodge like Guardians / Denjin Makai 2, important gameplay element -Has a smooth and precise run like Turtles in Time with no momentum -Has the best implementation of STOMPING downed enemies of any beat'em up -The desperation attack (that consumes life) is attached to a super meter that is consumed instead of life -One special move per character which is very useful, on a single-button, with some extra moves mapped to attack/special + a direction, multiple options from a grab, quick rise from a knockdown, and a block button -The combos come in the form of juggles which can infinite enemies if you feel like learning to do them (this is what you'll see most players doing on challenge runs, but it circumvents a lot of the fun mechanical depth of the game) Cons: -Sprite work isn't on the same level as Bitmap Bureau's other games. It kinda looks like an SNK game (so, very good), but worse. -It's got jank. The big guy is hard to play as and his grab is the worst, which is kind of a cardinal sin for the genre. -The world of the game is bland when it could be a lot cooler and darker. The settings in SoR2 or the original Final Fight obviously make this look like a knockoff. -The way level select works could be improved, because in this case it breaks the achievements. Specifically, rather than letting you select a single level to play, it lets you begin arcade mode from any level. Due to this, a player can begin from the last level, and if they beat the last boss, they get the trophy for clearing the game on that difficulty. Pros: +Gameplay is fast and makes me sweat. +Meaty, challenging levels. Level 1 is a freebie, 2-5 are all about equally difficult (good), and level 6 is head and shoulders above those, legitimately challenging. +Bosses have personality and all do something different (plus unique tracks for each of them). +Lots of QoL features that make learning an action/arcade-style game more approachable, like a training mode, and especially the level select. The last level of the game is much harder than the previous ones, so being able to play it individually keeps the motivation to learn as high as it can be. (You'd be using save states to achieve this purpose in real arcade games, via emulation.) +The spirit of classic games is here. The placement of enemies and food in the levels is well thought out, there's a constant high level of tension, and good variety. Much attention has been paid to things like chains and score. +The music goes above and beyond. They hired a professional EDM composer from the UK named Featurecast who specializes in game music, and he knocked it out of the park. I listen to these tracks outside of the game to get pumped up.
Big beat em up Arcade energy from this game, rather simple in terms of enemy behaviour, but the combo system along with the movement mechanics make it a really satisfying experience, each playthrough will be around 30 minutes on average, so it's a real cool game to just pick up and play regardless of time available!
