This is one of those games that genuinely lets you play however you want, wherever you want. If you feel like taking things slow and grinding resources at a relaxed pace, you can do that. If you want to ramp production up to absurd speeds, that’s just as viable. The game gives you an incredible amount of freedom, including tens of thousands of meters of vertical space to build in if you really want to go wild. It strikes a nice balance between structure and freedom. You truly feel like you’re building a massive factory without constantly worrying about aliens tearing it apart. The tower-defense side of the game is intentionally streamlined you place defenses wherever you like, enemies route around them however they can often flying over them while taking fire and that’s it. You can’t wall off paths, and enemies don’t actively target or destroy your defenses. While this removes some strategic depth, it also eliminates the constant frustration of rebuilding after every attack. Logistics is where the game really shines. You have a huge number of options in how you manage resources. You can funnel everything into one massive storage system for easy access at the cost of capacity management, or split storage by resource type and scale each independently, trading simplicity for more complex wiring. You can use hopper storage for faster inventory access at the cost of extra materials. Automation is entirely up to you as well whether you automate absolutely everything or only the resources you use most often. The UI isn’t perfect and could use some refinement, but considering how small the development team is, it’s already in a solid place. The game is still actively in development, with roughly one major patch per month and a constantly updated beta branch that sees near-daily changes. Unlike many developers, updates stay balanced rather than dumping in huge feature sets and worrying about balance later. The developer deserves special mention. The main developer, DJArcas, is extremely active in the community, regularly streaming both gameplay and development. He takes time to answer questions, listens to feedback, and most importantly gives clear, honest responses. If something won’t be added, he explains why. If a suggestion is flawed, he says so. And if he agrees, it often gets implemented quickly. That level of transparency and approachability is rare, especially in a game that’s updated this frequently. Overall, it’s refreshing to see a game with this much freedom, thoughtful design, and a developer who genuinely engages with the community.

This is a quirky, niche game. But there are a few caveats that should be mentioned right up front. It's an old and VERY early entry to the Factory/Automation genre. The average person's expectations of the genre have changed significantly since this was designed. It is NOT for the impatient - If you're used to the modern rush rush style game then you will get frustrated very quickly. For example, you can easily expect to play 100+ hours per world on the default settings with a constant struggle for resources. The intended gameplay is that you set up some automation and let it run while you go and *do something else*, explore, etc. If you're used to Post-Factorio style games where buffering is bad then this might upset you. if that's compatible with your gameplay preferences then you'll get right into this game. It's something you can play a world for an hour or two, and come back a few days later. It has things for friends to do in multiplayer mode. The game does have an intentionally creepy vibe. Yes, that block behind you wasn't there a moment ago when you walked down that corridor. Yes, it really did make that unsettling sound. Unlike games where you have to move items and maybe fluids between buildings in your factory, in this game power distribution is probably a bigger challenge than item distribution. There are no AoE power poles like in Factorio. Regarding polish - I have some concerns but in general it's pretty decent for a solo developer. Lets just say it has "quirks" and "character". They're things that are not hard to get used to and are easily accommodated during gameplay. It is well known that development concluded on Fortresscraft Evolved and that Fortresscraft 2 is a major refactor/rewrite and modernization. Fortresscraft Evolved and its expansion DLC is as far as it will go in this iteration. If it's your kind of game then you will get an incredible amount of value for money from it.

This game is a gem in the rough. Some of the mechanics dont make a lot of sense but once you get into the game and start to understand that its a 10 year old game that lets you automate so much of your work it becomes a lot easier to play. The beginning of the game can be confusing for new players to jump into but if you can get past that hurdle there is a lot of fun you can have in the game building and digging deeper to get to new materials. You do have to protect you base. The automating aspects are fun once you work out how it works. it can be confusing but i am making some tutorials on YT to help new players start out. if you jump in expecting to take off and finish the game in 5-10 hours you are sorely mistaken. The game can be very grindy but you always have something you need to be doing if you find yourself standing around just waiting on things.

The recent negative reviews seem to expect this game to be like Astroneer, but that game isn't really an 'automation' game in the same way this game is. This is much more akin to Factorio or Shapez.io. It is fairly complex and doesn't always explain everything, but if you highlight an item and press 'h' you will get specific instructions which help greatly. I have a few issues, but the game is polished and deep and gets my recommendation.

Fun despite the lack of polish. Sure the UI is atrocious and the graphics are seizure inducing psychedelics, but the factory building is entertaining.
