March 2025
This is an automation focused game in a Minecraft style world. You are stuck on a planet, and that is about as far as the game goes as far as story. You find resources, build machines that extract the ore, add conveyors to transport them back to your base or elsewhere and use those new resources to build and research more. You start out doing a lot manually, but eventually you can automate most tasks. As your base grows, the current owners of the planet will start to take notice and attack you. This leads to an almost tower defense portion of the game where you setup defenses (lasers and missiles) to fend them off. And they will get tougher as your base grows, but it’s based on what you do so you have some control over it. That’s the general structure of the game but there are lots of mechanics to master, lots of complicated machines and workflows to setup, etc. Nothing too crazy though. This can also be played multiplayer and be setup with public servers but that isn’t something I explored. You can setup your worlds with different setups as well (length of daylight, number of resources, etc), so you can tailor the experience to some degree. Positives are just the exploration of the mechanics and the world. Figuring out how things work, why certain things are happening, how to deal with certain obstacles, etc. If you don’t like messing around with the automation mechanics, then there is really nothing here for you. I wish I could compare this to other automation games, but this was my first one. It is fun but the game can definitely leave you wanting for details at times. Once you get your feet wet, and understand some basics it can be very satisfying seeing your ore and other items trucking along and having everything ready for you next tasks. Also, the game is forgiving enough that you don’t need to have some super-efficient setup to get things done… I never would have finished it otherwise. My base was a tangled mess really. The world is pretty interesting too, with weird interesting enemies to deal with (though very limited in variety) and has a variety of biomes (mostly underground) with some extra challenges to deal with. The tower defense aspects are pretty simple but is an interesting enough obstacle to deal with. Those final waves at the end of the game are pretty crazy. Negatives would be, the game has some weird visual glitches where you can sometimes see through the world. It only happens in some areas so it appears to have something to do with the geography but makes the game feel very unpolished. Definitely has other aspects too that give it a kind of cheap feeling. The game also has this knack for just being annoying. One of your mines can’t produce more ore (which happens all the time since you aren’t constantly making stuff with it and it gets backed up), you will get constant beeps and notifications. Have too many things on the ground, the game needs to tell you anytime the amount changes… again with annoying beeps that can’t be shut off. You can shut the mining notifications off from the extractor, if you happen to know how which you probably won’t since you will be too busy to notice the text that describes it to you. Of course, then you won’t know when ore runs out, your cutter head wears out, it’s out of power, or whatever. Also, the game has no coordinate system. Want to build a conveyor (or whatever) down to the ore you found 250 feet down, good luck trying to line things up (or even have any clue where to start). There are ways but they are clunky and not explained at all. The biggest problem I had with the game though, is just that it is poorly explained. Your conveyor isn’t picking something up, your ore isn’t being used, or whatever, you just have to use trial and error to figure out the problem or look online. And many things are just not very intuitive. There is a help system but it tends to only show the most basic stuff. It is also very inconsistent, like it tells you this item “uses a lot more power” but many other times tells you exact info (increases output by 1600%). Might not seem like a big deal, but when you have limited power underground, knowing stuff like this becomes important (especially since running out of power underground can have some serious consequences). This means the game is really only for people with a lot of patience. Also, I really didn’t like how the game has references to DLC items in it, even if you don’t own it. Like the game will say you can’t mine this type of tile unless you upgrade your builder gun, except that upgrade is a DLC thing so you go through almost the whole game thinking you will one day be able to do that… but nope. Overall, a fun game but only for the right kind of person, and those people are probably pretty rare. You will need patience, be willing to do a lot of experimentation or watching tutorials and likely need to deal with some big surprises that can maybe ruin your game (I barely stopped it from happening so don’t really know what happens, but I can’t imagine how I could have fixed it). There is a lot of content though, so if you enjoy this at all you can play for quite some time.

I've played this game a bit. Definitely one of the best factory builders out there. It's not just about logistics, there's tower defense and giant lasers to fuel, and the one thing I feel that all factory builders need, it's a REASON for building the super massive factory. Logistics are fun, but logistics for a purpose give me the fuzzies. Eagerly looking forward to FC2.

Honestly such an underrated game. among all the amazing and fun content the thing I want to focus on in my review is the sound. This game has shown me just how much good audio can enhance a game. Once you get even a small factory, much less a large one, going it sounds amazing. Could legit sit in the middle of one, close my eyes, and just listen for hours. DJArcus has truly gone above and beyond. Then there's the actual gameplay; simply phenomenal. every single texture is amazing, the multiblocks are INSANE, especially the BIG BOI ones. Used to play this all the time years ago when I had more time to play, but I always find my way back here from time to time because I just love it so much. (most my hours are on my old account which is long gone)

I have never reviewed a game before so bear with me. I really enjoy this game. I picked it up in 2018 after seeing it featured on Direwolf20 video I stumbled on. The combination of logistics, factories, exploration, and tower defense appeals to me. I have never gotten super far progression wise compared to others, but that's just how I play. I tend to get side tracked exploring or hyper focused on one thing. If I step away from FCE for a time I usually restart with a new world when I come back. The same is true for just about any game I play. I like the logistics of moving x to y. That could mean extracting coal nearby to fuel power generation for some local ore extraction or using lasers to beam that power to distant operations underground. Now I have all this ore I need to smelt. If it's near surface conveyors are great for lateral movement with a bit of up and down. If it's a bit deeper you need to protect them with turrets. When you need to go deeper cargo lifts are your friend to get the goods to the top. Once you have all these materials up top, the freight system is there if you want to deploy a rail network to really move things around where you need it. From there I get to layout factories or assembly lines to process ore/materials into more advanced parts as I progress. As I my operations expand and production/power use increases so does my threat. The level of threat determines the size and scope of the waves of bug attacks. The better defense I setup the longer I can survive the waves. It's fun to see how long I can make it or when I'm not paying attention and trigger a spike only to watch as my base gets stomped. I like that the only repercussion of losing is waiting a few minutes for the CPH to reboot. Not long after getting FCE I began following it's Discord channel and I lurked in there ever since. There are plenty of people on including the developer that will help out new or old players with tips/tricks/advice about playing FCE. I am eagerly awaiting the release of FortressCraftEvolved: Phoenix.

It's hard to get started in FortressCraft Evolved, but it's fun once you do. The challenge isn't so much learning to perform basic tasks, but learning how all the pieces go together. Online resources are must to this end.
