Recommended (…but only because there’s no “Meh” button) Picked this up back in early access — I think around 2020 — and I still hop in from time to time when I want to scratch that city‑builder itch or don’t have the energy for a full RPG session. The game looks great, and I really enjoy the zone‑based housing where villagers do their own thing. Sometimes it works beautifully, sometimes it feels like they’re actively trying to sabotage me, but the idea is solid. The resource system, though, really needs an overhaul. Iron ends up being one of the most important resources in the game, but you can’t access it early on. That means you’ll be dumping money into buying tools from other towns, which hits your wallet hard in the early game. There are ways to mitigate it, but it still feels rough. The trading system is also extremely flat — most towns only buy items you can produce three or four tiers into the progression tree. It would be far more interesting if you could create markets, become a primary trading hub for certain resources, or specialize your kingdom instead of being forced into a jack‑of‑all‑trades setup. And don’t get me started on farming. You can build these massive fields that somehow produce a laughably small amount of wheat or barley, so you’re constantly playing catch‑up just to keep bread or beer on the table. The big problem, though, is that the game basically only works at 1x speed. Anything faster and a long‑standing bug wrecks your resource inventory, which makes feeding your village feel like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it. It’s… not ideal. Around mid‑tier 2, the progression just loses steam. The pacing slows down, the excitement fades, and it becomes way too easy to drift off and play something else. It’s fun enough that I keep it installed, but it’s nothing special in its current state. It could be great someday — but for now, it’s firmly in “Meh” territory.

Been a fan of this game since it first came out. I always jump back in after changes and every change has made me love the game even more... except one. The whole "Patrol system" is awful. What's worse is they tied it into the house leveling system which is even worse. My town is tiny but I've already got over 10 watch towers and 2 guards per tower patrolling 2 or 3 houses each. The supplies it requires to upgrade very minimal houses is insane. What's even crazier is .. WHAT ARE THEY PATROLLING!? Nothing attacks the town, no riots break out or anything. It seems like a pointless mechanic that is making one of my favorite parts of this game a complete chore for no reason. I love to see the houses upgrade and then more people can move in so that means less housing. It just has really derailed my interest in playing completely at this time and I really hope they balance things out eventually. I still will come back to this game and check in but as long as this awful patrol mechanic remains the same, I probably won't play much. EDIT: Have been informed updates have been made. Will investigate and proceed from thar. Thanks for all the comments y'all! <3

So, uh, they removed the weather system and there is no natural day/night cycle. Fun game, but whyyyyyyy remove such little things that create immersion?

It's not perfect but it's really good. You can fix most of the things you take issue with through custom rules or mods, and mods are easily downloadable from the main menu of the game itself. For me, this is the most complete city builder of the current era. Some random points: - There's no combat, but you can train military units and send them on missions (all off-screen). There are still purposes to building watchtowers and walls and such as they provide fortification to increase your housing density. - You can build your population up into the thousands, I'm not sure if there's a hard cap or if you're just limited by the space you have and the numbers your CPU can crunch. - The game gives you reasons to go back and redesign or spruce up earlier areas as you unlock new tech, which just makes the whole experience feel less static and more interactive. There are 4 different progression trees with their own tiers, you can focus on any and/or all of them as you please. - Logistics and economics are the biggest mechanical focuses. It can be anywhere from grueling on the challenge difficulty to completely inconsequential on the creative difficulty, or somewhere in between by setting your own world rules. By default, this is a very slow progressing game but again, there are mods and rules to tweak that as you please.

It's a nice and chill game for a while. I really like the building part, where you can design and place your buildings almost however you want. And everything kind of grows organically. That looks good and feels good. It's definitely fun for a couple of hours and I do recommend. However, as you scale up, a lot of small (or big) frustrations crop up. - No access to Housing - what do you mean!? I have 3 big residential zones, one even fortified, plenty of room for 6-7 new houses! What's more, some existing houses still have free room! Why don't you just go there or build yourself a house!? No, instead you'll just complain and leave... I can't force build the houses myself... - Villager path blocked - why!? By what!? Where exactly!? Could you maybe please highlight the problematic part? Not going to lie, a walkability/pathability overlay would be helpful, as would be clearly marking the problem... - No access to Entertainment - how about the three fully stocked taverns that sit mostly empty? Why don't you want to go there!? - No access to Refined Food - the granary is full of them, the market is selling them, why don't you just go buy some? There's no food delivery service here... - Being full on a resource, except one storage that is actively requesting more and not getting it. Why!? The production building has full output, the storage has room and is reqesting, workers are assigned, why don't you want to take it there!? - No more room available at lodging - that's a lie, there's five free spots! Are you traveling with a school trip of 20!? As your town grows larger there's plenty of these kind of issues where something doesn't want to work, and there's no explanation why. The game could really benefit from providing an explanation why the problem occured. Still, you can ignore most of those things and just build stuff and have fun for a few hours. Even with all those problems, it's not hard to keep overall happiness over 80%.
