I had to think about this game for a while. Four Last Things presents like something I would be totally into: a point-and-click adventure through an absurdist world collaged together from medieval paintings by Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and others. You play as a repentant sinner who wants to enter a church for confession, but thanks to bizarre jurisdiction rules, the priests won't let you. Instead, they offer that you exploit a loophole: re-commit all seven deadly sins within the local parish, *then* you'll be eligible for confession. I really liked this game. It's funny, and it genuinely knows how to handle its humor. The problems you solve in almost Myst-like fashion are creative and engaging: it’s fun to scan the environment and ask, “Okay, how do I commit sloth here?”. Though the puzzles can be a bit obtuse at times, it was never in a way that felt frustrating, and more in a way that invites experimentation and play. Based on my experience, I’d absolutely recommend it. My one point of contention is that the game seems to present itself as having deeper critical or philosophical intent, but I never really felt that come through. It feels cynical, mostly poking surface-level fun at how silly religion can *look*, without really exploring what any of it might *mean*. I think I was a bit disappointed because the premise had the potential for something more thoughtful, empathetic, or reflective. But I also feel like it's not really my place to tell someone else what contents their personal art should have, but because of this, it didn't quite land with me as much as I had hoped it would. That said, Four Last Things is still a beautiful game with great humor and a banger soundtrack. It’s a focused, creatively interconnected experience that feels just right in length. You might walk away wishing for a little more narrative depth, but for me, it was still very much a worthwhile experience.

Such a lovely medieval sin simulator. It’s silly, smart, and surprisingly beautiful in its own weird way. Confessing your sins has never been this fun!!

Readest this carefully, for I shalln't repeat it. Once shall I write the review, no more no less, and the number of times it shall be written is once. Not twice shall thou see it, neither thrice. Four times is right out. And the review is thus: There are some nice paintings in it, among other things.

This is quite a short point & click adventure game, but it is a gem for sure. I spent roughly 2 and half hours on this game, and that included getting all of the achievements. I actually wanted it to go on for longer as I was really enjoying it, but the given the premise it makes sense that it was the length that it is. I'm not going to say too much about the premise as I think it's better that you find out for yourself what the goal in this game is, but I think it is a really fun concept. At the heart of this game is a silly (and a little crude) humour. The description itself says "It's kind of like if Monkey Island had been made in 16th century Flanders, by a time-travelling Monty Python fanboy", and I think that sums it up pretty well. I really enjoyed the humour in this game and I love that it is contrasted by the art-style literally being composed of renaissance art which is known in general for having a very serious and illustrious feeling to them. To those that play a lot of point and click games, when a character has something you need, you expect to have to find something they want... not offer a "sexy little dance" and then watch your little character twerk his way to getting free sh*t. I love art, and love being in art galleries and artistic spaces, but I don't know a whole lot about renaissance art (or classical music for that matter). I maybe recognised little bits here and there and it was a lot of fun seeing things that I have seen before pop up in this game. If you are a big fan of art of this era, I can imagine that this game would be even more amusing to you. The music is in game is fun, and it felt different to what you would expect in a video game. I don't think I could name another game that plays classical music as the main soundtrack, and it fits so well in this game. I really enjoyed the fact that each scene actually has musicians playing in it, and better yet, if you interact with them your character will tell you what they're playing. It's a small detail that I really enjoyed. The puzzles in this game are also pretty good. I find with this genre, that games can go wrong if it's too easy or the puzzle solutions are a bit nonsensical. Thankfully everything in this point & click is logical, so for me it struck a good balance. In terms of achievements I would say this game is a pretty easy 100%. There are some missable ones, but they are easy to go back for. Overall I love this game, and I was actually really happy to see that the developer has made a few others of a similar style, so those went straight on the wishlist.

As a kid in museums I would always imagine myself in the paintings I was watching, It was always an interesting experience as sometimes you would have proper Heaven and Hell scenarios like Hieronymus Bosch. Where pain and suffering was so easily visible next to the far reaching paradise that is heaven. It's a chaos that this game recreates, and I never thought a point & click game could not only be this good, but be this interesting. It's a genuine fun experience that showcases and recreates art in a liveable sense I haven never seen before.
