Very grindy monster hunter-esque like game. Very fun if you love Japanese themed things. Kids, it's not worth if you don't have a disposable income, spend your hard saved money elsewhere. Old dudes who wanted to relive the PS Vita days, this is our jam. Remaster Soul Sacrifice next PLEASE

There are two kinds of people who should play Freedom Wars: those who played the original over a decade ago and don't want to fish out their Vita for a second play-through, and those who have played every other hunting game worth playing and are desperate for something a little different. That's not to say Freedom Wars is BAD, it's not, but it's not GREAT either, and a lot of its value comes from the novelty of its setting (which disappears over time), and the very specific era it released in (when Monster Hunter was completely absent and competitors were ass). As a reference point, Freedom Wars is somewhat akin to God Eater (though a little less chuuni in tone, and a little less floaty). Combat focuses on using two weapons (usually a melee and ranged weapon) to clunkily grapple through the environment and dismember large enemies through button mashing prompts. It sounds reductive, and it is, but not nearly as much as you'd hope. There isn't much variety in the enemies you fight, or the maps you fight in - and when variety technically starts to appear, you're still approaching the fights the same way you always have and always will, so it amounts to a new coat of paint at best. What makes the game worthwhile is the setting. You exist in an oppressive post apocalyptic society that fights other equally awful societies in a fight for resources. Each society (called panopticons, which are effectively regional mega-prisons) constantly use giant robots to steal resources back and forth from each other, like metal scraps, ice cream, and math nerds. Narratively it's all played very straight, but mechanically it feels very tongue-in-cheek. As an example, you're labelled a "sinner" (a prisoner/ slave) that has a 1 million year prison sentence to work off, and without warning you can be penalized for all sorts of things (like sleeping sideways, walking too fast, talking to NPC's, etc) and you have to buy the right to do the simplest of tasks you'd otherwise take for granted. As you play, you replace the constant robotic wardens (intentionally voiced with shoddy TTS, not AI) with a large cast of surface-level characters, and replace the navigation of oppressive rules with a by-the-book mystery and themes. This means as you progress through the game (by buying privileges, learning more about the world, and streamlining repetitive combat), it's novelty falls to the wayside leaving a bland experience you may not have the heart to finish despite its short length. It's not worth $50. It might be worth $30 if you're someone who values novelty, doesn't value your time or money that much, and wants to have some fresh talking points to bring up with other videogame weirdos. I'm in the latter camp so I've enjoyed my time with it, but Freedom Wars is a relic out of time and not for everyone. There's a reason it was remade, a reason it has a cult following, a reason I've put the time and effort to re-experience it, and a reason it's flopped yet again a decade after its original release.

Fun game, if you enjoy MonHun titles prior to World, or God Eater you'll like this one. The plot is unique, the characters are memorable, the combat is fun especially while zipping around AoT style, there's a good variety of weapons and play styles, you can do missions to recruit allies and take your allies with you on missions, you can play dress up with your character and your "accessory." There's variety in the missions, and having human enemies can be interesting from both a story and gameplay level. There were a few missions I struggled with but after grinding some gear or learning more about how to play I was able to overcome the challenge and felt good about it afterwards. The concept is unique and the first dozen or so penalties you receive for doing things like running, accessing off-limits areas and talking to characters of the opposite sex are great, they drive home how dystopian the future is where sinners have no rights. Having an accessory is fun and engaging, you have a vested interest in giving them good gear that complements your play style, keeping them safe, and going on retribution missions if you fail a mission or they get kidnapped. The game has a PeaceWalker style system where you can save citizens while you're on mission, these citizens have various rankings and they help you with crafting and research. This is a remaster so the AI is outdated for enemies and allies, the graphics are very dated, the grind for weapons is similar to MonHun however it's even less clear what drops what. I often found myself grinding the wrong level of enemy for the drop I needed for a weapon which was frustrating, just read an online guide for the weapons you want to upgrade. The Text-to-speech for non human characters is absolutely an intentional artistic decision which makes sense in universe, people who complain about it totally miss the point. There's only a few maps and like MonHun and GE they're reused in about every possible way to keep things interesting. Gathering resources it pretty easy compared to MonHun, you just walk over glowing objects in each area or whatever enemies drop. Overall I had a fun time, it was not a significant time investment, the story was pretty new and interesting for me, and I'd highly recommend it if you enjoy older titles or aren't put off by some lack of polish. The remastered version has been patched several times after release, they even fixed some esoteric bugs from the original game so it's pretty clear the devs cared about this release and it wasn't a straight up cash grab. Had I played this back on the PS Vita when it came out I would have grinded my sentence to 0 years but alas I'm getting old and my backlog is growing older. I look forward to a Freedom Wars 2 some day.

Awesome Game, just like when I had my Vita! Now I just need someone to port Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines to Steam. That could literally be a Pre-Order for $100 with no benefits or rewards, and I would buy it, love that game.

Let's Contribute! The Imprisonment of Love is 1,000,000 Years! Disclaimer: I have previously played the original game to completion in the PS VITA Here are some good things to consider: - A lot of the complaints have been addressed over time (e.g Mouse movement feels weird, Voice-over being locked to EN, Weapon balancing issues, etc). This shows the developers care about player quality of life and are actively working to improve the game through this remaster. - The gameplay is fast-paced and combat feels very smooth. Actually, it feels a lot better than the original. - Story setting is interesting and it ties into the game mechanics well. - Difficulty ceiling is not very high. Casual players can enjoy this anytime with any style they like. - They included the Accessory line customization which was only available in the original JP release. This is wonderful. - Contribution Edition bonuses are farmable. There is only 1 exclusive item which is the Drop Rate Booster augment. It helps a little but not necessary. - Graphics aged like fine wine. It looks beautiful even now with updated graphics. - Soundtracks are great, fun, and suits the tone of the game very well. However, here are some downsides including some of which is carried over from the original release: - The story length is very short (~20 hours) and ends abruptly - There is a lack of enemy variety. At its core, there are only 5 unique big enemies to hunt. Not including the variants or cannon fodder. The variants are different by being more aggressive, tanky, and have additional attacks weaved in. - Endgame is simple grindfest. It's understandable but some people may not like it/only came for the story. - The $40-50 price tag is a high barrier to entry for an average mileage of rougly 50-100 hours. - It is a 10-year old console game. It will play like it. Imagine the old school Monster Hunter or God Eater games. TL;DR It's a fun game with a unique setting that ties well to the gameplay elements. Definitely get it on sale at least when it gets to 30-50% discount. Full price feels a bit too expensive for what it offers. Oh, also check out the idol songs in YT! They are cute!
