Gecko Gods is an open world adventure where you control a gecko as it explores a small archipelago and solves puzzles to open temples and awake the gods. For the most part, it is a chill experience. You travel at your leisure and run, jump, and sail your way from island to island. You go up, you go down, you go sideways. You survive leaps from great heights and gravity is never a problem. The music is relaxing and the gecko is cute (especially if you customize its color)! Although you can die, it takes a major misstep to do so. In most situations, the gecko recovers from injuries quickly and keeps moving. For some, this game may not be difficult enough. I liked the fact that very precise platforming was not required and that most puzzles could be figured out without too much strain. Even the few slider puzzles were very simple. If you are observant and understand basic mechanics (pullies, mirrors, wires, etc.), you will have no trouble. Most achievements are story related, with a few tied to collectibles. The game clearly tracks your progress on collectibles and there is an excellent achievement guide published by the Spire of Completion Steam Group. I am not a fan of the save system in Gecko Gods. Auto-saves are intermittent and it is not always clear when a save has occurred. There is no way to check on your last save without exiting, so it is easy to lose progress. It would be nice if you could see the timestamp on your most recent save file, before you left the game. So, I’m loving this game and having a blast catching bugs and locating relics until I hit the very end. For some reason, the development team inserted a final escape exercise which requires perfect timing and is extremely unforgiving. Grrr... After finding every collectible and breaking every clay pot, this gauntlet is now my personal roadblock to completing the game. To add insult to injury, the sequence starts all over when you fail. If there is a save point along the way, I have yet to find it. So, my final verdict is that I loved the 15+ hours I spent playing Gecko Gods (adjusting for time paused so as to not lose progress). I really hated the last few minutes and have not yet managed to survive to the end. I will keep trying and will either succeed or decide that 100% is not worth the effort. I recommend this game to those who enjoy a chill adventure that is primarily about exploring, discovering, and solving fairly easy environmental puzzles. You will get your money’s worth, even if you are not able or willing to escape the final temple. For those who sail through to the end without breaking a sweat, “You’re a better gecko than I am, Gunga Din!”

My recommendation for this game is purely for those who are into a very laid-back experience without much thinking. I also don't want to leave a 'not recommended' review because I think the team really did put a lot of love into the final product, and it's overall not a bad experience and does not deserve to be bombed. However, I am very mixed on my personal enjoyment of it, so I will leave an honest review! I don't dislike this game. In fact, I love the concept on its own, and it was on my wishlist for 5+ years. However, the final product I feel is lacking polish. I already ran into three separate glitches of varying severity (one with a bugged music/jingle loop, and one was getting straight up clipped through inescapable geometry). The puzzles are repetitive, with the same three basic ideas being used again and again (pull a lever, jump through a hoop, repeat) and the moveset is extremely limited and slow compared to the scale of the world. I also found it pretty strange how the cosmetic options are seemingly... kind of hidden away? I had to walk around and search for a mirror-looking object that had no distinctive landmarks around it, and never found it or another one again after the fact. The collectible insects are cool and immersive, but the relics feel out of place and with little fanfare. The birds' text is hard to get through; you can speed up some of the text, but sometimes that same action will skip the dialogue entirely, and it as a whole feels a little too tell-not-show-y in a game that I believe would hugely benefit from leaving the player to their own devices. With a more varied, interesting moveset, and more intricately and uniquely designed puzzles that aren't monotonous and mindless, this game could stand out a lot more, and I definitely see the potential!

An incredibly chill exploration game. The environments are beautiful and dense and theres all sorts of nooks and crannies to poke around. The music and sound design is great. Theres bugs to eat, and secrets to find. You get to play as a cute little gecko. It's a great time. Do yourself a favor and go play the lovely little lizard game.

I've played the demo for around 5 hours ontop of this review if that helps the validity, but this game is genuinely so precious. Being a little gecko just eating bugs and running around is such a nice lazy activity, but the devs also added puzzles!! I love games where you play animals and have their unique abilities, in this case its the funny way they walk, eat bugs, and you can stick to walls/ceilings! its genuinely such a good game and I'm so excited for launch day! Congrats to the devs for releasing the game!!! <3
