A top 5 game of all time for me. I wish guildwars 2 was half as good as the original game. Parents bought me this because we couldn't afford a monthly wow sub. I quickly began to monopolize the family computer to play hours a day. I saw the game was getting an update with reforged and logged into my 20 year old account. Birthday gifts waiting, my first toon still there in his mismatched armor with awful skills from when I was but a child. I have been playing non-stop since then- 200+ hours since reforged dropped. All I can say is thank you, ANet. Times are a little rough and a little scary these days, and it has been nothing but a pleasure and relief to have some good old nostalgia in these times. 10/10, 5 stars, a billion big booms, whatever. Thank you for my childhood
This game is a classic, and it's exactly how newer MMO's SHOULD play. Full party required just to kill a bunny rabbit? Check. Recruitable NPC's for when you're feeling anti-social? Check. Towns that act like lobbies, but once you step outside, the world is a private instance for you and your friends (and/or NPC's)? And random idiots can't steal from you or get in your way? Check and check. Combat that actually requires strategy instead of mindless, one-shot kill grinding? Check. Unlimited respeccing and deep theory-crafting thanks to sub-classes and a limited skill load out? Possibly one of the biggest selling points. Simply buy-to-play and no subscription or "freemium" crap? In this economy? Stop it, now you're just toying with me. Try it. Get frustrated. Get addicted. Make friends who last a lifetime.
Having over 5k hours on this game, almost all of it on the launcher, I can say the game has a ton of content for $20. I do not remember having a bad time over those 5k hours. For the reviews that say its a scam because it is not a remake, they are right. It is not a remake or a reimagining, it is a game that is 20 years old, that had only two people working on it in their off time as a passion project for the last 10 years, getting a small but dedicated team to work on it. This could mean anything. From QoL updates to adding in addition expansions to essentially making an alternate time line of pre. If you've never played Guild Wars 1 then grab it. If you are an old player that dropped the game a long time ago get back in, the game feels as alive as in 2008. If you cant remember your account contact support with as much info about your account that you know they are usually pretty good about getting accounts back. 10/10 A unique experience I have not found anywhere else.
I recommend playing Guild Wars Reforged if you enjoy vintage mid 2000s games, for it is one of the best you could possibly play from that time period. It will keep you busy hundreds, if not thousands of hours. In contrast to modern game design, the gameplay is slow paced but less handholdy and has a good amount of difficulty to it. However, I also have to dispraise Arenanet for this 20 years revival of the game. Because they went with the absolute minimum effort approach to it. Reforged means you get the same game, but it will run without issues on a modern system, adjust better to higher resolutions and you can resize and change the interface to your liking, which is not unimportant for aging gamers from back in the day. But there are so many things that did not get addressed and it's a real shame nobody could be bothered to do these things: - Old bugs from 2006 are still in the game. - No texture overhaul. - No character editor overhaul. - The amazingly beautiful music is low quality files and would have needed resampeling. - You can buy expansions, but they aren't registered on Steam and people have to wait for a fix. * fixed - As a Steam user you can not yet use the ingame store to buy character, storage or mercenary slots. * has a slightly inconvenient workaround - The old version almost never crashed, the new version crashes frequently after you died and get resurrected. You have to wonder why one would launch a new version to celebrate the legacy of this game, and then not even assure it really is the best version it can be and works 100% for everyone. Missed opportunity to leave a top notch impression on everyone, now a lot of people are already pissed at Anet, which could have easily been avoided with a little more care.
