the best part of this game is the named item Hands of necromancy. its a very good game. ironically ive always felt like necromancy in games was never really well done in games, mostly because games are always centered on making the player do the combat instead of being a suporter for their own mobs. its ironically strategy but it does not work that well, theres ways to do that like necromancy being focused on only one minion, letting you possess at will different mobs. but either way, its an ok game. hope the sequel improves the flaws. pros: - cool setting and art - very well designed - level design is very good, but it feels uninteresting after some time that it could have been a bit more rounded up. cons: - pacing is a bit weird and the game does not really feel like it was passed through the proper polish test. - reviving mobs is fun but it lacks controls, wish it was more welldeveloped. right now its more like you revive the closest dead enemy, so you can kinda choose to revive a tough mob to fight by your side - weapons are too boomshooty I only passed the first hub and passed the first boss. what i can say is that so far they understand. Play a bit, but after you get a bit bored just use cheats to spawn items and have some fun trying to see what is the limit of the engine.

This oldschool fantasy shooter is strongly inspired by Hexen, and it determines both its strong and weak sides. On one hand, it's atmospheric, set in a gloomy world of dark magic, with nice art and music. There's a lot of creative ideas with weapons, abilities and items, pushing the game into a metroidvania territory: there are lots of places you'll need to revisit once you have the right power. On the other hand, the gameplay has the pacing of a frozen snail: both you and your enemies are armed with slow projectiles, and there aren't too many of them anyway. Most of the game consists not of shooting, but of walking around huge multi-map level hub looking for things you haven't checked out yet. If "where the hell am I supposed to go" is the experience you enjoy, you'll find it here, well-made and aplenty. I, personally, am dropping it -- not because it's bad, but because I don't have patience for this.

Bought this because a) saw the sequel was coming out, and 2) it was only $5. This has been one of the BEST expenditures I have made! It's worth triple the price- I haven't had this much fun in an "old skool retro boomer shooter" for some time! Well worth the money- I wish I could pay MORE for it!

Hands of Necromancy is a fine boomer shooter in the vein of Hexen and Heretic. Armed with an arsenal of many different magic weapons, such as a Fireball staff, an ice ring and just literally a pistol (not magic), you kill hordes of Undead, Demons and other Magic monsters such as Gargoyles and Golems on a quest to find whoever commands them. I mostly had fun with Hands of Necromancy and it's competent as a retro boomer shooter. Most of the weapons feel good to use and the game is mostly fair and fast-paced. There are two different modes, one of which making exploration a bit more streamlined so you don't have to scour different maps to find keys for doors in other maps, but I played the normal mode and found it just fine as you also have a quest log that shows you which level to find which key in. There are items as well that heal you, boost your damage and there are even permanent transformations you can use to transform into a monster, giving you new attacks and allowing you to find secrets, which I found pretty cool. The game has two flaws though that I will point out. First, the titular "Hand of Necromancy" item is mostly useless. It allows you to resurrect dead enemies to fight on your side. Sounds awesome, but it's mostly broken or just not very useful. Resurrected enemies are supposed to teleport to your side and follow you, but often they just stand around, or don't teleport to you even if you walked quite the distance away. They also seem pretty weak, die quickly and many enemies' attacks are just not that useful against moving enemies. I found that the best enemies to resurrect were the Gargoyles (they fly and follow you easier) and the red Demon enemies (they have a homing projectile), but most of the time resurrecting enemies just isn't all that great and kind of a disappointment for how unique of a feature it is. Second, the game can be quite buggy. It's easy to get stuck on random geometry sometimes. Dashing with the Wyvern transformation into a ceiling slope means you get stuck for several minutes until you sloooowly finish sliding down said slope since the dash is uninterruptable. The second episode boss is in a closed room - I died and got resurrected with the Crystal resurrection item, but revived at the beginning of the level (which is intended) and could not reenter the boss room since the door was closed and no switch is there to open it. Worse, there is actually a crystal in that same room, so I feel like that is something that should have been caught with testing. There are probably a few other small things I am forgetting. The game has 3 episodes and a bonus episode which is more linear and doesn't have a hub. I guess a last thing to mention is that the level design is kind of all over the place, with some levels being very intricate and multilayered, and others super simple and straightforward. The last bonus episode doesn't seem to have much rhyme or reason in it's levels and you get sent all over the place thematically, and it reuses the final boss of episode 3 but in a much smaller area with tons of enemy adds, making for an annoying fight. Most of the levels are fun though, but there are certainly some odd exceptions. Nevertheless, a lot of this is nitpicking. I had fun with Hands of Necromancy, and while it may not be the most polished boomer shooter, it's definitely worth a playthrough if you like these kinds of games and I hope some of the smaller issues will be solved in the followup. Recommended!

An impressive Doom mod that manages to stand on it's own. Good emphasis on interesting level design, good pacing of weapon use in particular and secrets that don't make you pull your hair out. The only down notes are a lacking final boss and only unlocking the wyvern transformation at only the final level. Music is great. Which is why I wish there was more than only a handful of tracks :(
