this is NOT A SOULS-LIKE. this is a PUZZLE SOLVER game first and foremost. not that the combat is bad and doesn't share "souls-like" qualities, but that is not what defines a souls-like. More enemy variety is sorely needed for this to be a truly enjoyable experience past the mid-way point You will not progress in this game if you can't solve puzzles. (Or look them up ofc) leaving recommended since the overall presentation is good if you're into puzzles but don't go in expecting a dark souls type game like I was

For clarification, this is NOT a souls like game. It is mainly an adventure, exploration puzzle game with minimal hand-holding. The atmosphere, mood, and world of the game is intriguing and immersive. The puzzle design approach is that of similar nature of Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The writing and dialogue are mediocre. The ending is especially poor. I would like a sequel with more cohesive level and puzzle design (having to remember a code on a piece of paper you had 3 hours prior to the actual puzzle is poor design) Overall I would thumbs-up this game for its atmosphere and mood. The interesting world and the minimal hand-holding (rare in these days!)

I let some days pass since I beat it to settle my thoughts, and here is the thing, I think it needs a sequel to fully realize its ideas... First off, performance is great, has great PC features at launch and one of the better launches of the year on the technical side. Now the game, it starts really strong and at the beginning I thought it was going to be one of my top 10 this year, but the more I played the more I notice that the game it's, at several points, at odds with itself: - The paying attention part is oversold, its quite easy to know what to do next, it feels condescending at times, except for like 2 puzzles, there is very little brain power needed, and most of them are number codes. - They cleaned up the UI just to bury the information in convoluted menus (?) - The combat is like a souls game, yet there are no real boss battles, which is weird to have the combat system of games that thrive on them. There are just "beef up" regular enemies, or groups of enemies as final battles of areas. there just 5 types of enemies and 4 thematic orbs with 3 difficulty tiers... - Speaking of, difficulty is a joke, and you heal way too much with the nioh-like white ring, I beat it on merciless with my inventory full of medkits and other stuff that was never needed. - Most of the stuff you pick is either for a fetch quest, puzzle, or useless... I still explore but I got disappointed more often than not, those chest that needed several color and shape coded keys were the worst offenders, takes a lot of time to find the correct ones and the best reward they offer usually are the crystals to close time loops, but several just give you a useless consumable. I don't think the game is good as an exploration game and neither as a souls game... Why recommended then? The world building, visuals and voice acting were enough to carry me, really on those aspects, masterclass. They need to figure out what they want it to be gameplay-wise for a sequel tho.

I haven’t seen an apt portrayal of the reprehensible nature of war and the psychological toll often swept under the rug by most games since Spec Ops: The Line. This is a fascinating game that feels like a mashup of Death Stranding, Myst, and a touch of Resident Evil-style puzzles. I’m hesitant to call it a souls-like because, although combat is prevalent, it’s not the main focus. However, you can customize settings such as losing items on death or enemy difficulty if you want. The game is very narrative-driven, which some interpret as weak gameplay. However, the mystery and discovery demand a level of curiosity often missing in today’s waypoint-driven games. There’s no “go here and do this” mechanic. Instead, you’re expected to piece together what you need to do. While not exactly groundbreaking, I appreciate the direction this takes the game. You are encouraged to meander and retrace your steps. This can be frustrating for some and might be seen as a time-waster. This game is not for those people. The gameplay itself is quite solid, though don’t expect a deep variety of enemies. The focus is more on puzzles and curiosity. Dispatching enemies becomes easier over time, and the game doesn’t throw too much at you because it’s designed to complement the puzzles you need to solve. The combat adds a subtle pressure and sense of failure that underpins your investigation of the in-universe events. The narrative is excellent and resonates well with today’s climate of mindless online vitriol, spite, and other overwhelmingly negative emotions. The game isn’t violent from a combat perspective, but it is narratively. There are scenes and topics that are difficult to stomach. It lays bare the raw flotsam of the human race and explores the consequences of war and hate with a fantastic supernatural twist. I highly recommend picking this up.

Lost and Loving Every Second 10/10 – For people who love wandering around like headless chickens and actually enjoy it Okay, so I bought Hell Is Us right after pre-ordering Lost Soul Aside and immediately regretting that choice like a bad haircut But this game? No regrets at all. It just tosses you into this gloomy, war-torn mess and basically says, “Good luck, Sherlock, Find your own way.” And honestly? I did. Sort of. After walking in circles a lot No Map, No Clue, No Problem This game is the king of giving zero help. No maps, no arrows, no glowing lights pointing where to go—just you, your bad sense of direction, and a whole lot of confusion You’ll wander around like a lost puppy sniffing every corner, hoping you’re not retracing your steps for the hundredth time SPOILER: You probably are. But that’s half the fun. Or half the headache. Depends on your mood. Sadness Everywhere, And I’m Here For It The world looks like someone forgot to turn off the “depressing war movie” filter It’s dark—but also kinda beautiful in a “wow, this place really hates me” way If you like your games like your coffee—dark and bitter—this one’s got you covered NPCs Who Could Win at The World’s Most Boring Tour Guide Contest Forget friendly chatty people The NPCs here are more like, “Go over there. Solve that thing. Don’t get killed. Bye.” No emotional backstory, no dramatic speeches Just blunt directions like your least helpful friend who still somehow gives the best advice Sometimes they drop puzzle hints, but mostly they sound like they’d rather be anywhere else Fighting That’s Actually Fun (Surprise!) The combat is fast, brutal, and really satisfying The finishers are so savage I laughed and cringed at the same time—like watching a horror movie but with swords Plus, there’s a big bunch of weapons to choose from, so whether you want to stab, smash, or just mess stuff up, you’re covered Puzzles That Make You Question Your Life Choices The puzzles don’t hold your hand You’ll stare at a weird rock or some random thing for ages thinking, “Is this important or just a rock?” Then suddenly you figure it out and feel like a genius… right before the next puzzle makes you feel dumb again It’s confusing, annoying, and somehow addictively fun—like trying to assemble furniture without the instructions Runs Like a Dream, Unlike My Life Big shoutout to the developers because this game runs smooth No crashes, no weird bugs, no lag. The only thing breaking here is my brain trying to understand what the heck is going on Final Thoughts: I’d Get Lost Here Again in a Heartbeat If you’re into: Walking around totally lost and loving it Solving tricky puzzles that make you want to scream Fighting creepy monsters with brutal weapons Exploring a sad, broken world that’s basically a big emotional mess Then Hell Is Us is your perfect nightmare. 10/10. Got lost, got confused, fought monsters, solved puzzles, and had an absolute blast. Would happily get lost again and again
