I'm old (very old...), and not really an avid 'gamer', but this software has revived an old fondness for turn-based games (Dungeon Master on the Atari; yes, I'm that old...). I never play PvP (too dumb for that...); the Single Player mode has more than enough variety and interest to keep me going for (I hope...) a few more decades yet. Recommended, then, for those who, like me, are not very good at computer games. This one is a Good One.
Message to the Devs, I have never played a game from you before. I have read the reviews people are leaving on this game. I wholeheartedly agree that PVE needs to be the focus of this game. Co-Op vs Computer is the way you will want to fly in 2026. People are sick of toxicity. They want the sense of accomplishment from beating the most difficult AI opponent with their friend/s. Do this through good AI of the computer player/enemy. Don't just give them a massive amount of resources or flat percentages of damage/health/etc. All your minor PVP tweaks are a waste of your time. With that said. I think this game has legs. I am uncertain when the "1.0" release is, but I am having fun with this game. It feels a little on the slow side. I think there needs to be more mechanics on back-end/prep section. Look at a game like Unicorn Overlord. A giant success. A person doesn't actually battle, its all movement and prep work. We players of these tactician games love this. Give us numbers. Give us items. Give us auras. Buffs. Synergies. Spells. Enchantments. Etc. I just think it needs one more layer. I am uncertain of what it is. But I have been enjoying myself. The artwork is top tier. The factions are super interesting and awesome. I really think this game has huge potential. I'm getting Warcraft 3 vibes mixed in with Civ and a Larian game. Build upons this devs. Just set the PVP to the side and make actual meaningful changes to the PVE.
Early Access edition Elder Millennial ('82) here. HOMM III remains my most-played game of all time. Just finished Act I of the campaign, and I swear I could smell the bag of shrimp chips next to my Pentium, hear the sound of my dad's van pulling into the driveway and know that I didn't get my homework done in time, and feel my eyeballs starting to dry out from just one more turn. This is nostalgia bait at its finest, but more than that, they actually paid attention to the gameplay, the quality of life, and updating some of the mechanics for the modern era. We're only a month into early access and the devs have already shown that they're listening and adjusting and making the game extremely relevant for all types of players, not just those of us solidly-middle-aged 90's kids who have exactly 1 hour of HOMM playtime between when they put their kids to bed and they put their own old selves to bed. Looking forward to the full release.
I like the gameplay. But I am an old man, and I currently have issues reading all of the text in the game, it's too straining on my eyes as the size is just too small. I would also like to see a scalable interface that I can enlarge for readability purposes. Until that is added, I unfortunately have to park the game.
My brother and I used to play Heroes 2 and 3 with our dad growing up. We spent a lot of hours in the earlier days of this franchise. I can't say for sure that we gave the series much of a chance after Heroes 3, but I can say they weren't what we wanted from the game. Years later, I picked Heroes 3 back up and played it a bit, all the while thinking how nice it would be if game studios actually made games like they used to. Then I saw this, and the name "Olden Era" made me think they they were going back to those games I used to have so much fun with. So I bought it. After playing a while, I absolutely love it. This is exactly what I wanted when I thought of a new version of the old Heroes games I used to play. I have recently been burned by serval squeals games to series I thought there could be no way to fumble, and so I didn't have high hopes for this game. Heroes 3 came out over 25 years ago, and I was playing it in 2026. Maybe I'll be playing this version in another 25 years.
