There are numerous schools of thought on what a new Heroes of Might and Magic game should be. Everyone has their own favorite entry in the franchise and hopes this will be an extension of that specific golden age. In fact, it has become a trend to shamelessly taxidermy the beloved corpses of old games and parade them around in exchange for a big sack with a dollar sign on it. Thankfully, that is not the case here. The game is a great blend of nostalgia and innovation, familiar enough to feel like Heroes , but with enough new ideas to stand on its own two feet.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is actually good. The art direction, atmosphere, nostalgia bait — all solid. But the AI balancing is completely insane right now. I started a CUSTOM GAME on the EASIEST difficulty. End of WEEK ONE: AI shows up with THREE different Tier 7 creatures and an army literally 3x larger than mine. What am I supposed to do exactly? Negotiate with them? This doesn’t feel like “challenging AI.” It feels like the AI is playing a different game with a hidden economy, infinite resources, and a cocaine addiction. Classic Heroes difficulty was about map control, tempo, resource management, smart fights. Not surviving an apocalyptic invasion before I even build a Capitol. The game is good but the AI balance is absolutely cracked.

I played the game during playtesting phase and really enjoyed it :) Finally, a good entry in the series after all these years for people who loved Heroes 2/3/5. The devs are very attentive to players' feedback and are ready to change things if fans didn't like smt, so huge respect for that! It doesn't have co-op yet sadly, but they promised it's coming so I hope it won't take too long. I also hope the developers give PvE as much attention as PvP. The UI needs some rework, but the devs confirmed the interface would change during Early Access. I also want to highlight and appreciate that no gen ai was used in the game which is really important for me. Huge respect to Tim Bender (CEO of Hooded Horse) for his stance on the matter. "It is now written into our contracts if we’re publishing the game, 'no ******* AI assets,'" said Tim Bender in an interview. That's the kind of company I want and will support with my money :) Thanks to Denis (CEO of Unfrozen) for dreaming big, most devs would think it's such a crazy and risky idea for an indie studio to make a turn based strategy game like Heroes without being sure Ubisoft would agree to provide the rights to use the IP, and tbh they would be absolutely right as it's a crazy idea indeed haha. But Denis decided to try taking that risk anyway and now we have Olden Era :)

This is the moment my dreams finally come true — a real HoMM experience! The game captures the soul of the classic series while feeling fresh. I’m absolutely in love with the deep mechanics, the vibrant art style, and the overall logic of the world. The campaign is engaging from the very first minute. It’s everything a fan could hope for!
