EDIT: It's been about 2 days and 10 gameplay hours since my initial review, and I must make some adjustments about my claims. I think the best way to enjoy the game(something the team has been emphasizing a LOT) is treating it like a package console game, rather than a classic mobile rhythm game with constant updates. Taking your time to read the story might feel like a chore, but that's because you're expecting a pure 100% rhythm game. After spending multiple hours backtracking through the story(I hope they also make this easier by the way), I can be pretty certain when saying that the 'best way' of taking in In Falsus is seeing it as multiple genres in one title, simultaneously enjoying the story progression, occasional card crafting puzzles, and of course the great songs. Some people might not find it their taste to be forced to play the game a certain way, but it'll most likely be worth the extra time and effort if you give it a go. I recommend the game, but there're some major concerns that I hope reach the devs. I'd like to clarify beforehand that I've been an avid fan of Arcaea for over 8 years and my criticisms were made to hopefully help improve the parts I(and probably other players) found uncomfortable. Firstly the aspects I liked: The game is uniquely challenging, the inherently complex input system made me feel like a rhythm game beginner all over again which was refreshing. The puzzle element in card crafting is very fun, having to make compromises and prioritizing specs rather than finding the perfect answer from the beginning was a cool concept. Finally the songs are all around very high quality and absolute bangers. My concerns however are: Again, the inherent difficulty. Just getting used to basic controls took hours(including the demo), and probably even more for beginners to rhythm games. I'm worried that aside from functioning as a barrier to new players, it might also either cause restrictions when making difficult charts, or make them very uncomfortable. Arcaea's strength was that despite having a high skill of entry, getting used to the input system and adjusting to its subtle playstyle nudges and considerately designed patterns felt rewarding. I'm not sure if In Falsus can recreate that satisfaction with having to deal with 6 lanes one-handed on top of constantly looking out for the sky input. Currently even the tough charts have relatively simple looking patterns when looking at the floor and sky area separately; it's only because you have to process the two at once that any difficulty exists at all. It's not like Sound Voltex either where both hands could handle whichever part is needed. Each hand is strictly bound to its respective area unless the player goes out of their way to find some other method of input. There're also moments where I feel like the game could've been more considerate. It's borderline impossible to check your timing in gameplay because of the large gap between the floor and sky note, especially since the two have near zero interaction. Being able to skip the story was nice, but having an unskippable front segment with the date and RMI condition felt frustrating. Near complete lack of keyboard input support was also something that felt odd, as apart from esc to open settings or return to the previous screen, even basic functions like pressing Enter to play the currently selected song are missing at the point of review(EDIT: This has been addressed). Navigating the card crafting UI also feels a bit janky and less smooth than what it could be with a bit more polish. This feels like an integral aspect for a Steam game where the majority of the playerbase would be on keyboard, and is something I hope gets improved on in the near future. I hope the developers at some point can get around to patching aspects of the game here and there and ultimately improve the experience for everybody.

In Falsus, by the devs behind Arcaea (one of the biggest and most innovative mobile rhythm games), has finally arrived to PC combining rhythm game, visual novel, and puzzle elements. The Good: + You might think the price tag is steep, but you get over 70 playable songs and a pretty good and LONG VN experience. As far as content is concerned, the price is appropriate. + Unlike other rhythm games, it's not live service and acts as a full title on its own. Expect a full experience. + By virtue of being a VN, the story is very digestible. It starts out kinda sus but is emotionally tuned well as it goes on. + CV is good, fitting, and adds soul. + The UI and soundtrack are well-polished and sound quality is pretty good. + The song selection is great and they even brought in some very good tracks from Arcaea. + The card crafting system adds brain churning and satisfying puzzle elements, though it can get repetitive and grindy with the amount of trial and error and parts farming. The Bad: In Falsus' biggest pain is that it's unique control scheme is so complex and unintuitive it leads to an EXTREMELY steep learning curve. It's so weird that the game is SCREAMING to have a controller made just for it. In fact, people have been taking that into their own hands. Your right hand is tied up with the mouse, leaving your left hand to manage six keys on its own. You are expected to hold your left hand in an unwieldy position and shift it left and right to move your three middle fingers. It's very easy to lose track of where your left hand is. The far left and far right lanes (SHIFT and SPACE, respectively), are not easy to notice and feel pretty unnatural to hit, especially in combination with other notes. Another thing I will say in regards to this: Disabling the game's demo with a control scheme as beginner unfriendly as this is a scummy move. Verdict: In Falsus is a difficult game to recommend to the general crowd. Not because it's bad, but because of what it's trying to be. It's not a rhythm game first. It's not a visual novel first. It's not a puzzle game first. All three are intertwined as part of the whole system needed for progression. - You need to play the VN to unlock songs and cards. - You need to craft good enough cards to win in the rhythm game as part of story battles. - You have to succeed at the rhythm game and tough out getting used to an unfamiliar control scheme to get good parts to craft better cards and progress the story. However, for those who manage to make all these systems click, the game's content and progression feels extremely rewarding to get done. I had some growing pains with the controls but after that I'm having a blast so far (having played the demo + rhythm game experience helps but doesn't nullify learning the control scheme). Overall, it's worth a shot, but the lack of a demo after release complicates this.

PLEASE give us a way to make the notes on shift/space lines more visible seeing them is by far the hardest obstacle in the game so far

These games live or die by their song selection, thankfully just like Arcaea the music in this game is fantastic. The structure and presentation reminds me of Cytus 2, everything looks good and is where you expect it to be. Story is interesting so far even if the pacing could be better. It's worth your money. They clearly put a lot of effort in this.

Great gameplay concept that's inspired by other arcade rhythm games similarly how they did Arcaea. Although I'm on a ISO keyboard layout, the one with small shift, and it's hard to hit the left side note when there's an extra button. For that reason I remapped my mouse in it's software to hit side notes with left and right click, and also using a SayoDevice 03C++ because I have a membrane (gotta get a new keyboard lol) Another thing to mention is that on my specs there are random lag spikes that throw me off and sometimes break the combo. I think the renderer is defaulted to Vulkan, which on my specs is mega stuttery, but I'll see if I can use DirectX instead with launch commands. Either way without that technical ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the game is amazing and is worth every penny
