Joyquarium is a chill idle game where you raise fish and other aquatic creatures. Once your pets grow up, they generate passive income, or you can sell them. You can spend the money on buying more expensive fish or decorations like rocks, plants, backgrounds, filters, and more. Some decorations provide bonuses, like increasing income, adding more space in the aquarium, and so on. Overall, it’s a cute and relaxing game, perfect for background play. But if you try to speed through it, it turns into a boring routine: buy fish → wait → sell → repeat. I have played way to much of this silly little fish tank game in such a short amount of time. I like that it keeps track of your earnings even while you are not logged into the game. Makes it pretty easy to progress. I wish it had a bit better of a on boarding system but for the $2 I paid for it, I am very happy with it. Even at full price this game is worth it if you like fish keeping games. Lots of fish variety and for being pixal art their markings and shapes are correct, not like some fish games where you get a "goldfish" and you question if it really is a goldfish or not. But there are also two fun alt varieties you can get which are there just for something fun to chase to fill out your fishdex. But its totally possible to make a realistic and correct fish tank if you don't want to keep the fun alt colors.
This is another game I wish there was a neutral option for. Since I still enjoy checking in on it every now and then, I'm going to recommend it with caveats. Joyquarium is obviously a Chillquarium clone with a more realistic art style. I genuinely enjoy looking at the fish, even if they don't really do much. I also like that there is an extra freshwater tank so you can do a themed aquarium once you've finished filling your fishdex. The music is really "meh" for me. None of it really stands out and is a little too generic for my tastes, so I play with it completely turned off. However, the ambient options allow me to make a decent representation of what I imagine R'lyeh would sound like, minus Cthulhu, so that is fun. As far as the saltwater fish go, don't even bother. They generate no passive income, which means it takes forever to even unlock them, and decorations for that portion of the game do basically nothing as far as I can tell. Also, the nudibranchs don't actually crawl along the bottom, but hover a couple of millimeters above the sand, which breaks immersion. That being said, if this is on a steep discount and you just want another idle game where you can collect and look at pretty fish, it does an okay job scratching the itch. It's not the best game in the genre, but it's not the worst either.
I got this at 70% discount for £1.49, and I think if you're just looking for a simple relaxing aquarium game, this was pretty decent. The gameplay is simple, just open up packs of baby fish, sell them when they're grown, and unlock more fish/decor/aquariums. There are 9 freshwater fish tanks to fill, then 3 saltwater fish tanks at the end. Decorations and having a specific number of rare/epic/shiny fishes can give some bonuses to selling price/ exp/etc. But this doesn't need any particular strategy, and your fish can't die. No caring for the fish is needed, there is an auto feeder which feeds the fish for you. For the price of £1.49, I enjoyed unlocking the fish and aquarium decor. I liked decorating the tanks and creating my own pretty aquarium to look at. There is a "wallpaper mode", where the aquarium becomes part of your desktop wallpaper and you can watch the fish swim around on your desktop wallpaper (so cute). But be aware in this wallpaper mode, you can't access game functions like selling the fish/decorating. So treat the wallpaper mode as just a fun live wallpaper, and when you want to interact with the game, go back into the normal modes. It's taken me about 14 hours to unlock the last saltwater fishtank and fill it with fish. I still probably have a couple more hours to go while I wait for some in-game currency to build up so that I can decorate the saltwater tanks to my liking. In short, if you're looking for a relaxing simple aquarium live wallpaper with some game functions of unlocking fish and decorating your tank, this was a pretty decent experience. If you're wanting to get this, do it when it's discounted, since the full price of £4.99 is probably a bit much for this type of game. While I am expecting to run out of things to do in-game once I've unlocked all the fishes and decorated the tanks to my liking, I think I'll still get use out of this game since I'm going to pretend I have pet fishes that I can look at on my computer. It's just really cute doing work on my laptop, but also seeing the fish swim past my desktop wallpaper. I think it'll be quite calming, to do some journaling or drawing while having these fishes swim around in front of me.
I've seen some folks not recommend this game because it's a dupe of other games like Chillquarium, but as someone who has played what feels like 400 dupes of Stardew Valley, including down to using many of the same assets and sound effects, I am team "the more the merrier" - as long as it's good. Unfortunately, Joyquarium suffers from some quality of life issues, for example you need to collect 100 King Fish to get a specific achievement, but you can't actually sort by King Fish meaning you have to kind of painstakingly scroll through looking for the small crown to find them, which adds a lot of needless time to the game. There's other bugs/glitches that were minor for me. It's obvious Saltwater fish isn't anywhere near developed (no income earning, no extra 'perks' for buying corals etc.), but they're still pretty. The art in this is quite nice, and I do enjoy the graphics overall. I also really liked the soundtracking, which has been a lot more thoughtful than other idler / collectathon games I've played. Overall also quicker to complete than games like Chillquarium which feel almost impossible to complete overall, which can be offputting. So I'm recommending this despite its flaws! There's a lot of room for growth. It's also a shame that there's basically no activity in the Discussions section aside from questions right now, but hopefully that picks up with time.
