Dec. 2025
I went into this game and really wanting to love it. I’m a long time Junji Ito nerd, the kind who’s been genuinely unsettled by his work and still thinks about certain panels years later. So i sat down excited and ready to be uncomfortable! And when I finished it.. I mostly felt like Yea..that was nice :) Which is.. not exactly what i’m looking for from Junji Ito horror. Its mostly slow exploration. You creep through this big beautifully haunted mansion, that looks like it was decorated by a serial killer with an art degree and unlimited emotional damage, picking up items, solving simple puzzles and shoving yourself into closets and hoping whatevers chasing you loses interest.. Character-wise, you play as Yota, who wakes up with zero memories because of course he does. He's fine, but i never felt super connected to him. He feels less like a person and more like a camera with legs. The other characters are interesting on paper, especially my ghoul Tomie showing up, which should’ve immediately made me want to uninstall aha, but instead it felt more like spotting a celebrity at the grocery store.. Oh wow, its you.. ANYWAY I kept waiting for the obsession, the psychological unraveling, the moment where everything goes horribly wrong, BUT and thats my biggest issue: the game is too nice. Junji Ito horror is usually relentless. It stares at you and dares you to look away. And the horror? The art and atmosphere are genuinely nice and there are creepy ideas everywhere! Hair doing weird things, bodies not behaving right.. it feels polite, safe, almost cozy in a weird way, but only scratches the surface of what Junji Ito horror can be. And then there’s the movement.. Ohh my god, the movement!! Your legs feel like they’re made of lead the entire time. Every step is a slow slog, like your character just discovered how much gravity sucks. Honestly, it was funny. I kept thinking Are you tired? Need a break? Want me to carry you? It kind of adds tension not gonna lie aha. I didn’t hate my time with it. I was never bored and i appreciate the attempt to translate such a specific kind of horror into a game. In the end, its a sweet little tribute to Ito. It just isn’t the full on spiral into madness i was craving 🖤

Junji Ito Maniac is a first person view horror game that takes place entirely inside a haunted house. In this house you explore creepy areas and solve puzzles while headless statues try to grab and kill you. You can hide from these statues in closets, lay bear traps that cause the statues to fall and break, or throw environmental items such as vases at the statues in order for them to fall and break. The game has 3 endings. The first playthrough will take you around 2-3 hours to complete. To 100% all of the achievements, it will take you around 5.5 hours. + The atmosphere of the game is creepy and exploring the house is a lot of fun. The layout of the house is excellent, there are many secret passageways and discoveries to find. The graphics have a very polished and clean look in the game. The game also runs very smoothly, it is well made. + The story is interesting and branches off into 3 different directions during the second half of the game, depending on your character's choices. The game provides you with a save point half way through the game so you can follow up with any of the endings at any time, which is useful. +/- The puzzles in this game are a little on the easy side, and I didn't find any of the puzzles interesting. However, the puzzles are not obtuse and no guide was needed, which I appreaciated. - The game does not feel like Junji Ito's work. There are a few characters from Junji Ito's stories in the game, however the grotesque body horror that is the epitome of Junji Ito's work is totally missing. The game feels like Junji Ito meets "RL STINES: Goosebumps", for teens. - The main character is super annoying to listen to, constantly whining about everything. The worst part is the running. Every time you run for over 3 seconds the character breathes heavily and coughs like he just ran a marathon. This is extremely grating on the headphones. The stamina management in this game generally is super annoying and not realistic. If you come into this game wanting to play in a Junji Ito style atmosphere, you might be diasppointed. However this is a solid "Explore a haunted house" game in its own right. Overall: 7.5/10

First off everyone needs to accept the fact that Junji Ito's work is best with his line-work and expressiveness that only manga can allow. If you go into this expecting a true perfect 1:1 experience (as many often do with the anime adaptations) you're guaranteed to be disappointed. The game is an original story with aspects of the Junji Ito Maniac anthology series woven into it. It's also very clearly made by a small indie team and has the issues that go with it. Mildly frustrating design choices at specific parts aside this game is absolutely worth playing. It's a very fun time oozing with charm and love for the source material.

So far its okay, instantly bought it since I love junji ito but the game feels off. The monsters don't pose any real threat and are more just kind of there you can easily outrun them or just hide not offering much in that aspect. The story feels a bit messy and some of the characters espescially Tomie feel a bit off. The fact it uses AI for the story is a disappointment and overall the game feels like it focused more on graphics than on actual gameplay. For the price its okay but if you can and are willing to wait I'd honestly just buy it on sale. I'd still recommend it to fans but to the average person not so much

Art Gallery mansion Horror fun game 7/10 puzzle through the mansion so far I've been entertained by the puzzles and Monsters Yikes! a lot of anime and manga references here at least Junji Ito Media. and possibly other easter eggs. Nude statue monsters, Tomie is here too shes so great! I say sarcastically maybe. Multiple endings. AI generated content isn't too obvious thats a really low blow but storytelling is fine. it could be 10/10 without AI generated content don't support AI games but this horror experience was better than most.
