Underrated little roguelike that really deserved better than it got. It felt a little too easy early-on, made me question why so many of the mechanics existed at all when you could just run and mash melee to win. With just a little progress, however, things start getting interesting. Move fast, hit hard, bounce around acrobatically. Alternate between guns, swords, and special abilities, with a good variety of weapon and skill choices, passives, meta-progression. Worth buying at full price. It even has a cool/interesting backstory and some legitimately atmospheric moments, though it plays it very mysterious with all of that stuff, and it can be ignored if you want.
Every time someone calls this a Dead Cells clone, I know they haven’t played anything else in the genre. Yes, the parry is easy against basic enemies. That’s on purpose. The game throws so many enemies at you at once that a strict parry window would just be miserable. The easy parry is why diving into a crowd feels so good. Bosses and elites are a whole different thing. They will absolutely wall you until you actually learn their moves, and then they get easy, which is how it should work. Also, if the screen is too busy for you, there are a bunch of accessibility settings, and they actually help. Use them. One guy made this game. Insane. 10/10.
Okay, so real talk, I almost refunded this in the first hour. Enemies die so fast at the start that the combat feels shallow, and I get why people with like 20 minutes played are leaving negative reviews. But that’s the thing. The game doesn’t show you what it actually is until you get your first win. After that, the enemy density ramps way up, and all that technical stuff in the combat that you never needed suddenly matters a lot. Also, yeah, it looks like Dead Cells, but it does not play like Dead Cells. It’s way faster, and the whole vibe is more like Dead Space body horror. Stick with it, seriously. I’m glad I didn’t quit.
Katanaut may a perfect game, but it does a lot of things right. Movement and combat feel fast and fun, the atmosphere, pixel graphic and setting are great. The story has me intrigued and I hope I can finally get into the higher difficulties and uncover more of it. Most importantly though, I was never really frustrated when I died, even if it was to the final boss of a run. I just wanted to jump into the next one. Katanaut became one of my Steam Deck comfort games to play while lying in bed with my cats, I got everything I hoped out of it and then some. I just really wish I wouldn't suck so much at playing it lol
This is arguably one of the best roguelikes I've played purely because of its aesthetic and similarities to Dead Cells which is one of my favourite games of all time. The recent review for this game have me creasing because how can you negatively review a game that you have 0.3 hours on lmao. 10/10 so underrated.
