Kats Trigger TL;DR if you're here for the cool looking art, come right in, you'll love it here! No number grade! The game is not finished yet so i don't feel fair to judge an incomplete incarnation on its flaws and strengths. For the not so short version, have a lot of words to say but i will try to keep it short. First of all, i bought the game because "The Cover art looks cool and it's only 8$" and i don't regret it at all i would pay well into about 15$ if not more. What you get is twofold: a story that at first makes you think "wow that's a lot to dump on me, i just sat down" and it honestly drags you all the way down with our protagonist Otter (sounds silly i know but Otters are badass). Otter had some real bad ♥♥♥♥ happen to him and now he's really sad. Like so sad he wants to kill himself sad, but Otter took a page out of the book of Batman. He decided his vengeance descends upon the world at night. Kats Trigger in it's early access incarnation(as of 24-08-2026[dd-mm-yyyy]) has you play as edgy batman at night, and regular nobody #23 during the day. Altough playing is a large word for the daytime segment as it's mostly story sections, by no means boring and you CAN skip all of it. Although i do think that skipping the story segments would be a grave injustice to the experience as a whole. This game has very polished movement, combat and level design. To the point you'd forget this is an early access game. This game could release the way it is and i wouldn't have any complaints about it. This game is one that lets you play how you want, if you wanna stealth through it, you can. But if an enemy spots you, they have to go or you can't progress to the next room. An important addition as well is that the game right now has no music, but honestly in some of the fights it kinda added to the atmosphere and in others there was so much going on you don't really notice. The game has plenty of pretty difficult bosses which has honestly kinda make me rethink the way steam defines "hack n slash" because yes you have to hack and slash a bunch, wouldn't really define the stuff i did as hack and slash. In a way combat went reminded me more of soulslike and metroidvania style combat where you go room to room and don't try to get yourself killed when killing your opponents. Then the "gameplay" is honestly soulcrushing in a good way. You see the struggles of a common man who has lost that which most precious to him and now wants to make the piper pay his dues. The way this is done is so well written out that at multiple points i was pleading to the man to make this decision. I begged him to not go down this path because i know how it ends. and i think mr. Otter knew too, and he willingly still did it. and i cannot help but respect the fortitude he has shown. The teaser to the part that's not out yet is honestly a bit devoid of answering the question "but what is their goal now then?" and that's okay, maybe for the better. If we knew too much the wait would be too long... Then finally, the title card drop was THE coldest ♥♥♥♥ i've ever seen. Usually i make the "THEY SAID THE THING, THEY SAID THE NAME OF THE GAME" joke but i was just genuinely shooketh with how they dropped that titlecard. All in all game's a banger and when we are closer to release i would love to just see how far i can push the game speedrunning it. I'd give it a number rating, but like i said at the start: no number ratings until it's complete, when it IS complete i would love to disect why i think it deserves what it gets. Oh right, i played it on one, so i should include this section as well: I played it on a Steam deck and it held a steady 60 FPS throughout the whole game perfectly without any tweaks being neccesary. i had no need for rebinds as the controls were very intuitive and natural. Kind of a battery life eater but also it makes phenomenal use of the OLED screen on the deck. DISCLAIMER: i spent almost an hour writing this review and i STILL couldn't get everything out i was thinking of. So if this much didn't convince you yet, i can't help you anymore man.
For an Early Access this is great! Imagine Katana Zero, now add a grappling hook and actual verticality and you have one hell of a good time on your hands. The fast-paced gameplay is solid and enjoyable, even if there is no music during the combat stage. Outside of that the story might be a bit hit or miss - personally I quite enjoyed the interpersonal drama and more casual dialogues scenes between chapters, but it might not sit well with those expecting nonstop action. Either way the two main leads are written well enough to be engaging. Overall would recommend, easily one of the better games I have played in a while.
Absolute CINEMA is the way to describe it. For starters, I don't remember the last time I had this much fun with a platformer. The deflecting system, the different bullets, the maneuvering and the grapple, the interactivity of each boss. Honestly, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but damn if it doesn't spin it perfectly - when you get into action, it you can really feel yourself flying through everything. Honestly, when that Rogue Mode releases I can see this replayable for tons of fun. Even as I'm writing the review the trailer shows one or two things I didn't try. And frankly, even due some frustrating situations or enemies, it was worth every bit of the trip. Now, speaking of the trip... the plot is fantastic. You can really taste the mild insanity that goes on Otter's mind when he's on the suit and I'm not talking about the situations you'll find on scene transitions. The dialogue is occasionally nonsensical and it is absolutely fun. And it even got a few chuckles out of me on occasion. Even the Arsène-esque look they went for Otter turned out great, you can really feel where the inspiration came from - not the biggest fan, but I can give credit to the source and now to this: it's FANTASTICALLY dashing. To contrast that, the plot that runs along is genuinely really good. All the stray cat business is usually extremely adorable and it really made you want to cheer for the whole situation going right, no matter HOW you were cheering. It has every bit and taste of a good plot. It's short lived, but it's every bit sweet and quite frankly, every bit of the narrative it's just about as great as the rest of the game. If you watched HigeHiro, it is exactly like that with the spice of being Batman from Flashpoint on the side. Quite frankly, I wanna write much, much more about this game, but I can't help feel like I'd be able to do that without throwing a load of spoilers on the table and experiencing the whole deal by yourself is worth every second. Also, although most CGI seems to be different artists, all of them go perfectly well together and look absolutely beautiful. Every piece is absolutely masterful, including the cut-ins for dialogues. The only realistic complain I have about it, and it might be something I wasn't able to fix it on my side in any way, but during QTEs it prompts you to press the left mouse button but it actually wants the right or side mouse button. It happened a grand total of 100% times and since I played on Hard, if I ended up on a QTE and it asked for a mouse prompt, it was a 50/50 on which it wanted. It might've been me being stupid, however - I did remap one particular control to a different button on my mouse and that might've screwed how the QTE showed, but I digress. I'm electing to say it is my fault, but mentioning anyway in case anyone has that issue or if it is something that can be looked to into the future. Quite frankly, my only regret was buying it on sale because - and I don't say it often - this deserved its full price. Best of luck in the future and really looking forward to the full game!
