Absolute CINEMA is the way to describe it. For starters, I don't remember the last time I had this much fun with a platformer. The deflecting system, the different bullets, the maneuvering and the grapple, the interactivity of each boss. Honestly, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but damn if it doesn't spin it perfectly - when you get into action, it you can really feel yourself flying through everything. Honestly, when that Rogue Mode releases I can see this replayable for tons of fun. Even as I'm writing the review the trailer shows one or two things I didn't try. And frankly, even due some frustrating situations or enemies, it was worth every bit of the trip. Now, speaking of the trip... the plot is fantastic. You can really taste the mild insanity that goes on Otter's mind when he's on the suit and I'm not talking about the situations you'll find on scene transitions. The dialogue is occasionally nonsensical and it is absolutely fun. And it even got a few chuckles out of me on occasion. Even the Arsène-esque look they went for Otter turned out great, you can really feel where the inspiration came from - not the biggest fan, but I can give credit to the source and now to this: it's FANTASTICALLY dashing. To contrast that, the plot that runs along is genuinely really good. All the stray cat business is usually extremely adorable and it really made you want to cheer for the whole situation going right, no matter HOW you were cheering. It has every bit and taste of a good plot. It's short lived, but it's every bit sweet and quite frankly, every bit of the narrative it's just about as great as the rest of the game. If you watched HigeHiro, it is exactly like that with the spice of being Batman from Flashpoint on the side. Quite frankly, I wanna write much, much more about this game, but I can't help feel like I'd be able to do that without throwing a load of spoilers on the table and experiencing the whole deal by yourself is worth every second. Also, although most CGI seems to be different artists, all of them go perfectly well together and look absolutely beautiful. Every piece is absolutely masterful, including the cut-ins for dialogues. The only realistic complain I have about it, and it might be something I wasn't able to fix it on my side in any way, but during QTEs it prompts you to press the left mouse button but it actually wants the right or side mouse button. It happened a grand total of 100% times and since I played on Hard, if I ended up on a QTE and it asked for a mouse prompt, it was a 50/50 on which it wanted. It might've been me being stupid, however - I did remap one particular control to a different button on my mouse and that might've screwed how the QTE showed, but I digress. I'm electing to say it is my fault, but mentioning anyway in case anyone has that issue or if it is something that can be looked to into the future. Quite frankly, my only regret was buying it on sale because - and I don't say it often - this deserved its full price. Best of luck in the future and really looking forward to the full game!
This game's premise is pretty relatable. A man loses everything and consequently goes on a journey of self-destruction and revenge. The pixel visuals work well to sell the Katana Zero-like action as you cut through swathes of enemies who are unlucky enough to stand in your way. You've got a grappling hook and an invincible dash for evasion and movement, you can attack and parry enemy melee attacks and projectiles with your knife, and you get a gun that can load different types of ammo. Do you like explosions? You'll experience tons of those during the boss fights, too. The dynamics of the protagonists and their backstories are quite interesting. I had basically no expectations going into this game, but I'm beyond pleasantly surprised. The pixel art is gorgeous, and if there's any one particular negative it's that I can't remember any of the music. Everything else is great, though, especially for the price tag.
You know a game is going to be peak, when you curse the day she asks you to fetch a can of Pringles on the way out. -Goated game! A story of sorrow, vengeance, violence, nostalgia, suffering, and recovery. The characters are interesting, the protagonist is a man of many faces, struggles, and carries the weight of all his Sins along with the memory of his loved ones. I am yet to finish the game, but from the start the plot is awesome and keeps getting better. Character sprites are well polished, as so are the different styles of animations. While there is no background music atm during levels, this simply gives it a darker vibe that fits well with the moment. The MC is is basically Hyde at night, and once he comes home he knows he will be a Chad Jekyll because someone has been waiting eagerly for his return! At times you may feel like you're playing as Jack the Ripper, and at others a father that lost it all and to preserve the little he had of his humanity and hopes, he sought the abyss. EDIT 1/8/026: So I finally finished the game, and this was a masterpiece in the making for me even if early access. The plot had me holding unto my heart, since the feels were preety intense. I might be overreacting when it comes to these things perhaps, but the game did tear me apart emotionally speaking. It's been 13 years or more since the last time I cried. Even though I am not in favour of the ending I witnessed, I sure can't wait to see where the final project leads. I'm not going to spoil anything, so you guys play the game and find out for yourselves just how hard of an impact the story is to you all.
