As a long-time Kingdom Rush fan since the very first game, Kingdom Rush: Vengeance stands out as one of the most bold and refreshing entries in the entire franchise. Ironhide Game Studio took a risk by flipping the perspective, and it absolutely paid off. Instead of defending the kingdom, this time you step into the role of Vez’nan himself—the once-feared Dark Wizard whose story takes center stage. The game begins after Vez’nan escapes his imprisonment in the Rift of Cinders, following Linirea’s forces defeating Moloch, the ruler of that realm. What he returns to is not the kingdom he once fought against, but something even more absurd and chaotic: his own castle has been turned into a bizarre theme park, and much of the surrounding forest has been destroyed in the process. From there, Vez’nan’s journey becomes one of calculated vengeance and restoration of power. Instead of rushing directly to King Denas, he takes his time dismantling Linirea’s forces one region at a time, reclaiming influence and reestablishing his dominance across the land. This slower, more strategic narrative progression makes the campaign feel personal and methodical, rather than just another war for survival. What makes Vengeance especially memorable is how it deepens the Kingdom Rush universe by showing events from the “other side.” Seeing familiar heroes now positioned as adversaries gives the world more depth, and Vez’nan’s character is explored in a way that makes him feel far more than just a villain—he becomes a force shaped by betrayal, ambition, and necessity. The gameplay itself remains classic Kingdom Rush at its core, but with a darker twist. The enemy-focused tower design and hero synergies make each stage feel distinct and strategically engaging. It challenges players to think differently compared to previous titles, especially when playing as the forces of darkness instead of the kingdom’s defenders. The post-launch content further strengthens the experience. The game already includes two excellent DLC campaigns: • Hammerhold Campaign • Pirate Kings Campaign Each DLC adds meaningful expansion to the world, introducing new factions, battles, and lore that continue to enrich the Kingdom Rush universe rather than simply adding extra content for the sake of it. Ironhide Game Studio once again demonstrates its mastery of tower defense design and long-term worldbuilding. Vengeance doesn’t just continue the franchise—it reframes it, showing that even villains have stories worth telling. For fans of the series, this is an essential chapter. For newcomers, it’s a bold and refreshing take on a familiar formula. 9.5/10 — A powerful, villain-centric evolution of the Kingdom Rush saga that delivers both gameplay depth and rich storytelling.

TLDR: The best Kingdom Rush yet. Customizable tower loadouts and a modernized UI breathe fresh life into the formula, even if balance issues and a lack of endgame content still hold it back. PROS: ➕New upgrade tree/format ➕New towers that you can pick and equip ➕New UI look and feel ➕Actual settings within the game now ➕Playing as the bad guys is a nice switch CONS: ➖Balance issues - Overpowered/underpowered heroes and towers often create a defined meta ➖Lacks longevity/endgame - no endless levels or leaderboards My reviews for past Kingdom Rush games here: KR1: [url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/Synikx/recommended/246420?snr=1_5_9__402]Kingdom Rush (KR1) KR2: [url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/Synikx/recommended/458710?snr=1_5_9__402]Kingdom Rush Frontiers (KRF) KR3: [url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/Synikx/recommended/816340?snr=1_5_9__402]Kingdom Rush Origins (KRO) This is the 4th game of the series. They don’t have a cohesive story, so you can skip around, you just might miss out on some fan service references. Content (Game world/Narrative) – The game world is very similar to other KR entries, just new level setups/biomes. There also seems to be some small-hidden puzzles and/or achievements on most levels. These often contain funny memes like Kermit drinking tea. The narrative has taken an abrupt switch with the player now playing as the bad guys. The story is still presented sporadically at set intervals, so it’s not a major overhaul other than mostly being a palette swap to the bad guys. A nice change, but overall, kind of meaningless. Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – The mechanics have undergone a massive revamp, and contain both good and bad changes. The biggest change is the amount of towers available as well as the ability to choose your “Tower build”. There’s something like ~20 different towers (some locked behind paid DLC) and you can choose up to 5 to bring into a level, up from the standard 4 non-choosable towers of the previous KR games. There’s a similar amount of heroes, and they function similarly to KRO - levels carry over between runs, and you pick abilities to level up. The issue here between allowing more options (mostly through towers) is that some of the towers are terrible and others are amazing. This leads to an issue in meta. And while the heroes are the same setup to KRO, they didn’t escape the lack of balance. The beginning heroes are terrible and make stages harder than they should be, whereas the later heroes (looking at you, Eiskalt) are super strong and single-handedly make those same stages a cakewalk. There is a new talent tree that replaces the star system of the previous titles. In the end, it’s mostly the same, a couple choices to make. The difficulty seems to be more forgiving than past entries, but holds a similar spike for post-campaign levels where the final campaign level is easy, even on the hard difficulty, and the next level after that is very hard, on the same difficulty. Graphics (Quality/Technical) – Graphics here are only slightly better than KRO, but that slightly is enough to make it the best in the series, there’s a noticeable increase in fidelity, almost like something from a PS3 to PS4-era. Much more than the graphics is the UI, a complete overhaul. It looks and feels much more modernized and is a big factor in revitalizing the game. On the technical side, there’s not a huge amount of options like most PC games would have, but there is still a solid increase from past versions that only had a volume slider. I didn’t notice any bugs. 1440p @ 240hz | installed on SSD Audio – The audio is mostly the same as prior entries. Nothing noteworthy here, typical same tracks in the levels and level select and heroes voiced on movement. I want to emphasize how repetitive it can get. Some of the heroes have annoying voice lines and they spam the same few lines over and over each time you move them. I wish there was an option to turn this off and I found myself decreasing the volume due to annoyance. Replay Factor (Longevity) – The replay value is as good as past KR games, but it still lacks the unique endless levels in KRF. Without buying DLC, there’s over 20 levels content, and each level can be run 3x for the campaign run, heroic run, and iron mode run. Other than that, there’s not much else aside from achievement hunting. Final Verdict – Kingdom Rush Vengence (KRV) is the 4th installment in the Kingdom Rush franchise. This version shakes up the traditional foundation that the previous three installments have kept by adding tons of new towers that allow you to choose a loadout before a level. This is by far the largest change to the series so far, and while I do think it’s a net positive change, it does come with some downsides, namely metagaming. By offering so many options now with towers, I feel as though the balance suffers a bit with there generally being clear useful towers and others that are terrible and will never be used outside of mandatory Iron mode runs. Still, having the ability to choose which towers you want instead of being confined to the same 4 is a major change that I love. Another change, though not as impactful, is the look and feel of the game. The graphics seem better, the UI is completely different, and there are much more technical options available. It still has a feel of a mobile game, but this is the first entry where I can say it appears as though effort has gone into the PC version. Overall, I would say this is my favorite version of KR so far. It’s not perfect, and it can definitely use some sort of endgame or longevity factor, but I adore the changes made since Origins. If I had to rank all the KR games so far: Vengeance Frontiers KR1 Origins Recommend? (Price) [Y/N] Yes $20 is a bit much for this game. The historical low sale price of $8 is very worth it though. Kingdom Rush game where you play as the villain and heroes from previous Kingdom Rush games are your enemies? Amazing. I played a bit and 16 hours flew by like nothing. And the variety of towers is just crazy. Very good tower defense and highly addictive.

I have been a fan of the Kingdom Rush games for quite some time and always loved the little Easter eggs that are in some of the stages of this game. The addition of different towers and heroes makes things very interesting.
