Kingdom Rush Frontiers is proof that a tower defense game can make you feel like a tactical genius and a complete idiot in the same five minutes. You place your towers with the confidence of a seasoned general, and then a pack of desert bandits strolls past your carefully planned defense like it's a casual afternoon walk. The desert setting is a breath of fresh air, with new enemies, new maps, and new tricks that force you to rethink everything you learned. Upgrading towers is dangerously satisfying, and picking the right heroes feels like assembling the Avengers, if the Avengers were a wizard, a pirate, and a very angry warrior with questionable fashion choices. The art is bright and charming, the humor is sharp, and the difficulty has that perfect "just one more try" bite. Three stars on every level? Sure, I'll just casually give up my free time and my sanity. 10/10, my towers have defended more bravely than I ever have in real life.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a very good sequel. The original set the bar pretty high, so I was a bit afraid that this one wouldn’t live up to it, but fortunately, it did not disappoint. I thought that it would be “more of the same,” and in a sense it was, but in a positive way. You could actually think of it as a continuation of the first game, but set in deserts, jungles, and caves. Gameplay-wise, it is more balanced and less frustrating. The tower types are the same, but the new designs are innovative and fun. It also introduces the ability to upgrade heroes, whose progress carries over between levels, something that was missing big time from the original. For me, another solid 8.5/10. Technical: I found the macOS version terribly laggy... not sure why for such a simple game. I used CrossOver instead, and it ran flawlessly.
A bit sceptical about this one. In the first game every tower came in handy at one point, but in this game barracks were pretty much useless. Not entirely, but it wasn't a smart idea to actually use them in most cases, as they were rather weak. Liked the new map and enemies, good to see more of the world of Kingdom Rush; however, there wasn't as many extra content as there was in the first game, that was a bit disappointing. And oh, they've also increased the difficulty quite a lot, I'll give that. Some stages were too hard even in Casual mode, so I'd say this is the best choice if you're looking for a real challenge. They've also introduced a new leveling system for heroes, where they now earn experience and stay at a particular level, instead of resetting to level 1 every time a stage is started. I personally prefer the old one, but it's just me. Heh. The game also features item shop (and of course, items that comes with it) and endless modes. For some reason, they never add those two to the Steam versions of KR games, but good thing they did in this one. So, yeah! That's pretty much it. Still as great as the previous game if you'll ask me.
Such a classic tower defense game that still holds up really well today. The gameplay is simple to pick up but gets pretty challenging at times, which makes winning even more satisfying. It has that old-school charm that makes you want to keep playing “just one more level”. Definitely worth playing!
