Kinny and the Cosmic Cauldron is a delightful little pantry-building roguelite where you collect questionable ingredients to feed increasingly ravenous monsters… so they don't eat you instead. It leans more cozy than challenging, but I'm 100% here for the witchy vibes, lovely pixel-art, and clever synergies. Story + Gameplay Trapped in the Stewpendous Spoons, Lyla must combine and level up ingredients using the Cosmic Cauldron to satiate hungry aliens for (30) days. Start a run by picking one of four difficulties and selecting three starting cards. Each round, toss up to twenty ingredients into a pot, score points based on how often the bits bump into each other, and score bonus points after everything settles. At the beginning of each day and end of each round, add one of six ingredients to your pantry. Every other week or so, fight a picky eater. Controls. Great with mouse. Deck verified. Playtime. Runs are brief and can be saved at any time (click ESC > "To title"). Maybe ~1-2hrs to beat your first run? 100% will take longer. Settings/Options. Basic fare: Windowed/fullscreen, audio sliders. What Works For Me ✅ Creative and lovely character/monster art. (Carcellan!) ✅ If you have more than 20 ingredients, they're selected randomly. ✅ So deck management is required . ✅ Fun synergies between items and tags. ✅ You're definitely cooking some humans and monsters. ✅ "Cards" create long-term effects that actually impact gameplay. ✅ Random events introduce new cards and challenges. ✅ Easy to pick up and play in short bursts or long sessions. What Doesn't Work For Me 🟥 Some synergies are clearly stronger than others. 🟥 So there are some obvious strategies. 🟥 I don't know what a kinny is. An alien cat species?* 🟥 Is it me, or does the story not make much sense? 🟥 Random events and associated dialogue can be repetitive. Final Thoughts + Recommendation Kinny is such a lovely surprise. I went in expecting the Pop Rocks version of [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1404850/Luck_be_a_Landlord/?curator_clanid=45365863]Luck Be A Landlord , and that's kinda what I got, but it's elevated by quirky ingredients, truly cute artwork, and just -- genuinely addictive gameplay. This is something you can play in 15-minute bursts or binge for hours. I know because I've done both. It does have two glaring weaknesses. First: As you unlock more ingredients and figure out how everything fits together, you'll find some clear imbalances in different deck builds. Second: It opens with a cut scene that doesn't seem relevant to anything else, and characters are introduced like old friends without any fanfare or explanation. If you're here to crawl through the min/maxxing weeds or explore a deep story, this isn't for you. That said, Kinny is perfect for my witchy friends who love creative settings, fantasy vibes, and/or strategic chaos. I'm having a lot of fun with this, and hope you do too. This is the first rougelite I've played in a minute that scratches that Balatro/Luck be a Landlord itch. It's just engaging enough that I don't get bored and can replay it a million times, but I also don't have to think tooooo hard (some people may not like this, but for me it's perfect).
This game is seriously addictive! I was a bit dubious upon first booting up, as I wasn't sure how engaging a game about watching balls roll around in a pot would be... then I blinked and three hours had passed. So, needless to say, pretty engaging! I've been having a really good time with it. I love the pixel art style, all the different types of items you can unlock, and all the reactions you can experiment with. It makes for a very fun and varied experience, and it makes me curious to always keep discovering more, which is exciting. I do agree with other comments saying it could do with some balancing -- right now, removing items from your deck seems disproportionately difficult, and quite a few strats feel like dead ends. I also really wish there was a way to upgrade the number of items that can fit in your cauldron without hugely nerfing yourself. The one thing this game needs most of all, though, is ENDLESS MODE! I can't believe it doesn't have endless mode. This is exactly the type of game that's built for the purpose of going on forever in a series of random matches until you inevitably lose. Instead, there's only one set storyline, with the same levels and enemies every time, and a final boss upon which the game inevitably ends. Man, come on! Let me keep going! Anyway, all in all it's still definitely worth your money for how fun, innovative and well-crafted it is. But with some updates it could go from great game to total masterpiece, so I really hope the devs consider working on it more in the future!
There is a lot of beautiful art work in this game and funny/interesting characters that it keeps the rogue-like gameplay loop interesting. It is satisfying to watch the ingredients bounce around in the cauldron, and there are obvious synergy combos to pursue the more you play. I think the biggest complaint is that the RNG and balance seems all over the place, but they seem to be doing balance patches daily to help address and tweak the game which is greatly appreciated. I'd advise that less is more in your cauldron once you get past the first boss in each run!
