Nov. 2025
Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony, developed by Frontier Aja in collaboration with CFK Co., Ltd. and published by CFK Co., Ltd., feels like a carefully preserved time capsule—an updated, polished revival of a beloved Touhou fangame that originally built its reputation on the unexpected merging of bullet hell sensibilities with gothic action-platforming. Its premise is immediately familiar to fans of the series: an ominous disturbance spreads across Gensokyo, and Reimu Hakurei’s investigation leads her toward the Scarlet Devil Mansion and its enigmatic mistress, Remilia. The story remains intentionally concise, functioning mostly as a stage-to-stage thread, but there’s a sense of theatricality to every encounter. Short cutscenes, brisk character exchanges, and playful banter help maintain Touhou’s trademark balance of supernatural intrigue and comedic looseness. The narrative never dominates the experience, yet it gives just enough personality and structure to make each boss confrontation feel character-driven rather than purely mechanical. The gameplay formula blends old-school side-scrolling combat with Touhou’s danmaku heritage in a way that feels both intuitive and distinct. Reimu’s standard attacks and movement options would be at home in a classic action platformer—precise jumps, midair adjustments, melee attacks, and ranged amulets—yet the game’s identity crystallizes when bullet curtains start filling the screen. Bosses and stronger enemies unleash patterned projectile spreads that demand studied movement rather than blind aggression, introducing moments of spatial puzzle-solving within otherwise traditional combat. The addition of support characters expands strategic expression, allowing players to summon allies like Marisa or Sakuya for brief, thematic attacks that can interrupt pressure or provide crowd control. Stages are compact but varied, each presenting environmental hazards, enemy densities, and pacing shifts that prevent the experience from feeling repetitive. Although the campaign can be completed in a single sitting, the encounter design ensures that the journey remains consistently engaging. Visually, the remaster turns what was once a gritty, stylized fangame into a crisp, contemporary action title. Anime portraits have been redrawn with sharper detailing and more expressive emotion, backgrounds are drenched in gothic atmosphere, and lighting effects reinforce the ambiance of moonlit courtyards, stained-glass corridors, and crimson-saturated dreamscapes. The art direction leans into Castlevania-inspired elegance without abandoning Touhou’s recognizable charm, creating an aesthetic fusion that feels reverent rather than derivative. Spellcard attacks, boss introductions, and hit effects are theatrically animated, amplifying moments that might otherwise feel simple in design. The soundtrack deserves equal praise—arranged versions of classic Touhou compositions blend orchestral glamor, rock flair, and haunting melodic textures, lending each stage a sense of scale and supernatural drama. Newly added voice acting further strengthens the remaster, grounding character personalities and giving emotional texture to dialogue that once only existed textually. Despite its enhancements, Scarlet Symphony still carries the structural DNA of its original release. The adventure is short, offering only a handful of stages and boss fights, and players seeking extensive progression systems, expansive exploration, or metroidvania complexity may find the experience limited. Platforming sections remain straightforward, prioritizing combat flow over mechanical experimentation. While controls are responsive, some hitboxes and movement transitions retain a slightly stiff, retro quality, reminding players that this began life as a fangame rather than a large-budget commercial production. The game offers harder difficulty modes and additional unlockable challenges, but replayability ultimately depends on one’s affection for refining performance, appreciating character art, or returning to favorite boss encounters. These constraints may deter players seeking a lengthy or multilayered action title, yet they also preserve the pacing and clarity that define the experience. What makes Koumajou Remilia enduring, however, is not its size, but its sense of purpose. It knows exactly why it exists—celebration, reinterpretation, homage—and every element reflects that intent. Fans of Touhou will find joy in seeing iconic characters reimagined through a gothic, theatrical lens, while players with nostalgia for classic sidescrollers will appreciate its deliberate structure, boss-focused design, and emphasis on style over excess. It feels handcrafted, not calculated, driven more by admiration for the source material than by commercial expansion. The remaster ensures that modern players can access and enjoy this once-hard-to-find gem without losing the texture and spirit that made it meaningful to long-time followers. In the end, Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony succeeds because it revels in its identity—a concise, atmospheric, character-driven action adventure that bridges fandom passion and traditional game design sensibilities. It invites players into a Gensokyo filtered through gothic drama and arcade precision, respects their time, and leaves before its ideas wear thin. For those who cherish stylish 2D action, reverent reinterpretations of existing worlds, or simply want a shorter but memorable supernatural journey, it remains a distinctive and lovingly crafted tribute—one that proves fangames can be artistic statements in their own right when given room to shine. Plays like classic Castlevania, for good and ill. This means linear, arcade style levels and limited lives. Dying starts you at the beginning of the room, losing all your lives restarts the level entirely. This generally isn't an issue for me except for the fact the game had bullet hell features much like you'd expect for a Touhou game. The reason that can be an issue is the controls feel a bit stiff at times. Movement is not quick, especially not flight, and it can be frustrating when the bosses are moving so smoothly or teleporting around the screen while you have such sluggish feeling movement. Jumping is floaty and tied to how long you hold the button so can take some getting used to. Overall, I'm mixed on the game but do recommend it if you want a classic Castlevania style game set in Gensokyou with Touhou style mechanics. Just be warned movement feels like it's working against you and the learning curve is STEEP. It reminds me of Rondo of Blood in how much fun it is despite how horribly frustrating it can be.
