wow i just saw all the bad reviews and was shocked. I really like the game! Was looking for new updates and probably will buy the dlcs. It's fun and was working nice for me. Played on win and steamdeck. Hope the dev can fix the performance issues for others, it doesnt deserve the bad reviews :(

tl;dr: Decent Walking-Tower-Defense with issues of not really having an end/goal, bugs, performance & partly awful music. Recommended, but just so. Maybe on sale. The basic gameplay loop of Monsters Are Coming! is great. Circle your walking city of towers, gather resources, kill monsters, upgrade and survive from checkpoint to checkpoint. Since the last update, the game now has an endless mode so it no longer feels like you are forced to stop playing once your build comes online, which is great! This is ultimately what makes me recommend the game. But there are also many issues left: - The music is, partly, awful. The basic composition is fine, but some of the tracks sound like someone was torturing the poor instruments and/or recorded it all through multiple layers of styrofoam. Just very off-putting if one of those tracks plays. - The performance starts seriously tanking once endless starts. The game clearly does not have good optimization at all. - There is no save during a run. Yes, they are short, but still - such an oversight shouldn't really happen in CurrentGamingYear. - The game still has plenty of bugs. Sometimes, towers won't shoot or your character won't use their weapons/mine. At least enemies seem to be affected by the same... - The game lacks a proper end/goal. At least I reached the Ark with all cities and on all maps, but I got nothing. If there is some kind of "story end", I have no clue what would need to be done to get it. At this point, I got all cities and most of the unlocks, so I just feel like I'm done here.

So there is good and bad, the good is the mechanics are fun, plenty of different builds between characters, bases, and base addons and more. Once you find that right build its pretty satisfying. Now the bad, you can't save partway through a session, at least not that I could find. If you have a good run it can last for hours, which is cool but a little bit of a commitment. And it really sucks when you find a great build and play for about 3 hours in one run and then the game crashes and you lose all your progress. which isn't surprising because you can add alot to your base, I have a 4080 super and it still crashed on me. If they did find a way to fix that then this would be 8/10 but with the crash im giving it a 6/10

I had fun playing the game, but I found a few things a bit odd: 1. Monsters really only spawn from the top and right side of the screen. 2. You can ignore bosses, they'll disappear and never really attack the city. 3. You can effectively become invincible and sit outside of a gate gaining levels and resources until you get bored. It'd be nice if it were more challenging and the different zones were unique in ways other than just appearance. You're only going to get about 30 hours of play time, but that's fair given the price.
