Mr. Prepper is a side-scrolling survival, crafting, and base-building game set in a dystopian police state. The premise is straightforward: you want to escape, but the secretive government won't let you. To regain your freedom, you must secretly excavate a multi-level underground bunker beneath your house, craft an escape vehicle, and maintain the illusion of a model citizen every time the Inspector comes knocking. Fact: Unlike the bleak moral choices in This War of Mine, your main headache here isn't psychological trauma - it's panicking to cover up your underground hatch with a rug right as the government inspector rings the front doorbell! The Short Answer: Is It Worth Buying? Yes, though catching it on a Steam sale is ideal. If you enjoyed This War of Mine for its shelter management and side-scrolling survival perspective, this title delivers a similar core layout with easier, more enjoyable base progression. Playtime 5/10 It takes roughly 25–30 hours to clear the story and complete your escape setup. Story 4/10 Trapped in an authoritarian country, you build a secret underground bunker and prepare a radical escape plan right under the nose of government agents. Music 4/10 Fairly sparse and repetitive - after about 5 hours, the soundtrack starts wearing pretty thin. Graphics 3/10 Standard mid-to-late 2015s 2.5D visual presentation. Mechanics 5/10 The gameplay loop starts out quite monotonous; the first 10 hours essentially play like a grueling carpenter simulator before true expansion kicks in. Designing and expanding your underground shelter feels genuinely rewarding, though base development hits a hard wall near the end game. Combat and shooting mechanics feel clunky and unpolished. Technical issues are a major annoyance: the game is prone to random freezes and crashes. Losing an entire day's worth of meticulous progress due to a crash (which happened to me 3 times) is incredibly frustrating. While DLCs (such as Animal Farm or Project Uranium) aren't mandatory, they add nice narrative bits and stretch out the progression loop. Overall, compared to games like This War of Mine, Mr. Prepper trades heavy moral dilemmas for simpler, much more satisfying shelter building and resource management. Personal Take A solid survival-crafting management game once you push past the initial slow burn. The constant tension of juggling base building, foraging, and keeping up appearances for the Inspector keeps the routine interesting. It suffers from end-game stagnation, mediocre combat, and aggravating crashes, but the core bunker-building loop remains a fun, lower-stress alternative to darker survival sims. Overall Score: 72/100
While the game can be a bit of a slog in the beginning, Mr Prepper offers a lot that provides a very entertaining experience. While I did not play the base vanilla version on its own, the DLC helps make your bunker almost entirely self sustaining. My only remaining hopes for the future DLCs (what few there still are) would be the ability to bring trusted members into the bunker that provide assistance, more decoration items and the ability to upgrade materials, like beds/couches being improved to rest faster or fridges holding more/cooling longer
Mr. Prepper is the only game where I can spend 90% of my time digging a suspiciously large hole under my house and the other 10% pretending to be a normal, functioning member of society. It’s basically a simulator for living a double life, except instead of being a secret agent, I’m a dude who panic‑hides cabbages every time the inspector knocks. The game starts simple: “Build a bunker,” it says. “Prepare for the end,” it says. Next thing I know, I’m 40 feet underground, building a hydroponic mega‑farm, crafting illegal machinery, and hoarding resources like a raccoon who just discovered Costco. Every time the government inspector shows up, I transform into a frantic cartoon character. I’m sprinting around my house shoving generators into closets, hiding suspicious items under the bed, and praying he doesn’t notice the GIANT SECRET ELEVATOR IN MY KITCHEN FLOOR. He walks in like, “Hmm. Something feels off.” Yeah bro, maybe it’s the fact that my electricity bill is higher than the sun. The neighbors are no help either. They’re all weird in their own special ways, which honestly makes me feel like I fit right in. One minute I’m trading vegetables, the next I’m helping someone with a problem that definitely puts me on at least three watchlists. But the bunker? Oh, the bunker is my kingdom. My masterpiece. My subterranean empire of questionable decisions. I start with one room. Then two. Then suddenly I’m building a multi‑level underground labyrinth like I’m auditioning to be the final boss in a post‑apocalyptic RPG. I’ve got farms, workshops, generators, labs — at this point, if the world ends, I’m not just surviving. I’m thriving. I’m flourishing. I’m basically the mayor of Dirt City. Mr. Prepper is the perfect game for anyone who wants to feel productive, paranoid, and powerful all at once. It lets me live out my dream of being a polite suburban citizen on the surface and a full‑blown doomsday architect underground. This game doesn’t just let me prepare for the apocalypse. It lets me become the apocalypse.
It's honestly just an okay game. Stylistically this plays a lot like This War of Mine, but the UX is not nearly as well refined. Crafting and building feels cumbersome, with little oddities that just make the game feel unpolished. Resource gathering is just boring, and the fact you can't zoom out when outside the house makes navigating locations feel like an old-school point and click adventure (and not in a good way). As others mention, the time scaling is too high, especially with just how incredibly slow the character does *everything*. I don't know that the game is worth $20, but it squeaks by at the sale price.
The kind of game you develop a special itch for that no other game can ever quite scratch. I'm not usually the type to really play post-apocalyptic games, mostly because I find them depressing. But Mr. Prepper does a lot more than similar games I've seen in that it doesn't force you into misery - just awareness. As long as you keep your stuff in order and don't do reckless things, you're just fine. If you start slacking, the government is on your behind faster than you can say "But there's a carpet over the trapdoor!" I'll definetely be coming back for another playthrough + the dlc some time :)
