Ninja Gaiden II (Xbox 360) is one of my all-time favorite games. I loved everything about the original: the intense combat, the challenging bosses, and the wide variety of weapons. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a fan of the Sigma version because it toned things down and removed the blood and gore. This change altered what made Ninja Gaiden unique, turning it into just another casual button-mashing action game. So, if you didn’t own an Xbox, the Sigma version was the only legal way to experience this game until Black came out. Sadly, this new release is a remake of the Sigma version, but it's understandable since the source code for the original Xbox 360 version is lost, which is a real shame. That said, this version is amazing! The gore and blood are back, and the combat is significantly harder than in Sigma, though it’s still easier than in the original 360 version. The graphics look fantastic, and the combat feels incredibly smooth and satisfying, bringing back that thrilling difficulty fans love. This is the best modern version to play. If I had to rank each version, it would be: Ninja Gaiden II (Xbox 360) > Ninja Gaiden II Black > Ninja Gaiden II Sigma. Overall, if you’re a fan of action games, you should try Ninja Gaiden II Black.

Hate Sigma 2's game balance with free weapon upgrades, additional lame statue bosses (like the "Buddha"), and the removal of gore? Consider grabbing this - it is slightly closer to the OG, although it's mostly just a better Sigma 2 with no censorship. In short, good for beginners, bad for purists, and a field day for whiners. [quote=] [*] Gore is back on the menu along with limbs flying around. Dismemberment behavior is pretty much exactly how it used to be. Can be turned off, if you insist. [*] Surprising solid port with the ability to custom-map joystick and keyboard controls! UE5 yeah, but there are no hiccups at all. The shader compilation happens ahead. (The FPS limit is 120 btw.) [*] New camera assists and camera tuning options made available. Helps numb the usual pain (just a little bit) with the 3D Ninja Gaidens if you choose to, ha! [*] Same OST. Same voices from what I can recall - Japanese at least. Same in-game notes. This is all so spectacularly nostalgic! [*] The combat is still airtight, deep, and world-class as it used to be! Flying Swallows and Izuna drops all day with the right meatiness and impact. [*] Difficulty appears to be somewhere between the insanely brutal OG NG2 and the easy af Sigma 2. Playing on Warrior. (Hard.) [*] Gives the "what Sigma 2 should've been" vibe as in no ultimate charging with the bow, no "Tests of Valor", no underwater battles, no incendiary shuriken, and no single-player Mission Mode in sight. Only the same/similar tag missions from Sigma 2. OG Ninja Gaiden 2 is quite possibly the greatest 3D action game ever made, at least in terms of combat depth and unique weapon mechanics. Sure, it's rough around the edges with at least a couple obscenely cheap sections. (Oh, I f'n loathe the OG jungle with its projectile spammers.) I'm glad Team Ninja respects the OG's vision a bit more albeit not living up to the "definitive edition" claim. In other words, the OG (chiefly in the Series X with auto HDR) continues to be the best version of this uncompromising one-of-a-kind hardcore yet intensely rewarding experience in video gaming history. Sweet start to 2025 with this shadow drop. Can't wait for NG: Ragebound, and NG4 later this year. Glad to be alive in the Year of the Ninja!

Not the "Definitive" Ninja Gaiden II experience as advertised, but it's a solid remake/remaster and the best NG game on PCs. It's more of a shiny and heavily edited Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. We're missing NG+ mode, NG II DLC Missions, Ninja Race, tests of valor, incendiary shurikens, the windmill shuriken, the gatling spear gun, and a plethora of costumes. Blood, gore, and dismemberment are nice additions to be returned to the game, and weapon upgrading using essence is like the original, too, but enemy spawns are somewhere in between vanilla 2 and Sigma 2; they're not as bombastic as the original, but not as barren as Sigma. I'd say this package is wonderful for those that grew up with Sigma, or those new to the series, but hardcore fans of the original Ninja Gaiden II on Xbox 360 will probably find themselves disappointed. Maybe mods will do the work for Team Ninja. But hey, at least it's better than the Master Collection. tl;dr: Fun game. Missing stuff.

As loyal ninjas, one of our favourite activities is debating the nuances of every version of this series ever released and forever debating which is best. However, in today’s gaming landscape, any Ninja Gaiden remaster or port is a gift to be savoured. Keep those Izuna Drops clean my ninjas.
