No Man's Sky had the best comeback story in gaming history. They could have been like other devs and abandoned the game but they decided to improve on it since launch. Take notes, Star Citizen & Starfield, this is how it's done. There's no microtransactions and the updates have been free for the past 10 years. I wish more game devs were like Hello Games.
My favorite game, BUT in 10 years, there's a lot of junk. I dream of an update that will clean things up, put everything in its place, and remove items from old quests that are unclear where and why they'll be needed in the future. Basically, I'm waiting for the 'Cleanliness and Order' update =)
This game is not what I expected at all. I normally don't like games with no real ending. I prefer progression, a clear goal, and knowing that eventually I will reach a final point and move on. Endless games usually lose me because after some time it starts feeling repetitive or directionless. But this game somehow hits differently. When I started, I thought it was just another space survival game: collect resources, build things, repeat. I wasn't expecting much. Then weird things started happening. I discovered my own star system and realized I could rename it with my IGN. Then I found out that if I upload it, other players who reach that place can actually see that I discovered it first. Suddenly the universe stopped feeling like a generated map and started feeling like a shared world. The scale of the game is hard to describe. You realize you're not exploring a small handcrafted map, you're inside something absurdly huge. The crazy thing is that the game doesn't force you into one path either. One minute I was looking for copper to repair things, the next I found a crashed B-class ship and started debating whether I should repair it, scrap it, or keep it. Then I ended up learning about salvaging, discovering planets, inventory management, and ten other things I wasn't even planning to do. What surprised me most is that there is always something pulling your curiosity forward. You constantly tell yourself: "one more thing before I stop." I'll check this planet. I'll finish this mission. I'll see what that signal is. I'll repair this ship. Then suddenly a lot more time has passed than expected. I still don't know how long I will stick with this game. Maybe I'll play for 50 hours, maybe hundreds. But I can already say this game completely changed my expectations. I expected an endless game that I would get bored of quickly. Instead I got a game that keeps making me curious. There is so much to do, but it somehow doesn't feel overwhelming. Great game.
I played... my son got old enough to sit with me and explore... then old enough to take the controller and go on his own adventures. Incredible game, we leave it on. Literally a lifetime worth of content. Get in the mix with a battle if youre feeling frisky, explore the deepest oceans, build the highest bases, or be lazy and look for lush systems with unique environments. I'm writing this on the 10th anniversary update as it downloads a ton of new (and always free!) content. Never wrote a review before, probably wont again.
