Sept. 2025
Notch – The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS, developed by Angels Blue Digital Entertainment and DigitalEZ, is a visual novel that leans heavily into psychological horror, surrealism, and emotional turmoil, blending these themes within a narrative that explores trauma, guilt, and the fragility of memory. Set in a dreamlike and isolated town, the game presents itself as a mystery on the surface—one built around a series of murders and fading recollections—but gradually evolves into something more abstract and introspective. It is a story that deliberately resists easy interpretation, choosing instead to unravel in complex layers through a mix of nonlinear storytelling, heavy symbolism, and emotional intensity. The game is divided into two main narrative arcs—Alpha and Omega—each of which is designed to present multiple endings and perspectives. These arcs provide different lenses through which to experience the broader storyline, which revolves around a protagonist attempting to piece together a fragmented past, all while confronting the sins and emotional scars of those around him. While it presents the appearance of a traditional mystery in its early moments, Notch is far more concerned with existential questions and metaphysical dilemmas than with a clear-cut whodunit. The further one delves into the plot, the more surreal and ambiguous it becomes, challenging the player to interpret meaning from emotional cues and abstract imagery rather than linear exposition. Visually, the game is striking. The artwork is deeply expressive, leaning into a unique blend of gothic and anime-inspired aesthetics. Characters are beautifully rendered, and the game uses its event CGs effectively to punctuate emotional and psychological turning points. The art direction creates an atmosphere that is often melancholic, eerie, or outright disturbing, depending on the scene. Paired with this is a soundtrack that consistently elevates the mood, with over 50 original compositions ranging from haunting piano melodies to aggressive rock and orchestral scores. The music rarely fades into the background—instead, it frequently leads the emotional weight of the story, providing much of the atmosphere when the text and visuals become especially abstract or symbolic. Despite its strong audiovisual presentation, the game is not without issues, particularly in its writing and pacing. The English localization is frequently criticized for being awkward, overly literal, or repetitive, which can dull the impact of otherwise dramatic or emotional scenes. While the original Japanese writing may be more fluid, the English version suffers from a lack of nuance, making some dialogue feel stilted or redundant. This, combined with the game’s tendency toward philosophical monologues and cryptic exchanges, can create fatigue over long sessions, particularly for readers who expect a tighter, more coherent narrative structure. Narrative cohesion is another point of contention. The story, while ambitious, often sacrifices clarity for thematic depth. Characters sometimes behave in ways that seem inconsistent or hard to relate to, and important plot developments can feel unearned or underexplained. Themes such as abuse, obsession, and self-destruction are touched on with varying degrees of sensitivity, and not all players will find the handling of these subjects satisfying or justified. While the game attempts to use its fragmented storytelling to reflect the inner turmoil of its characters, the result can feel more confusing than enlightening, especially without a clear emotional anchor to guide the player through the chaos. That said, Notch is a game that rewards patience and reflection. Beneath its cryptic dialogue and sprawling narrative are moments of genuine poignancy and insight. When the story clicks—when a symbolic scene suddenly gains clarity, or when a subtle clue from an earlier chapter is echoed in a new context—it delivers emotional payoffs that are hard to forget. The multiple endings offer different interpretations of the central mystery, and players willing to explore the full range of narrative branches will likely appreciate the effort that has gone into constructing a complex and thematically layered experience. For some, the game will feel like a hidden gem—an emotionally resonant and visually beautiful journey into the mind of someone broken by love, memory, and regret. For others, it will be a frustrating, overly ambitious story that never quite brings its threads together. Its appeal depends largely on the player’s tolerance for abstract storytelling and their willingness to look past a rough translation and uneven pacing to appreciate the emotional artistry at its core. Regardless of how one ultimately interprets it, Notch – The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS is an experience that lingers. It is flawed, yes—but also undeniably sincere in its attempts to tell a story that feels uniquely personal, tragic, and haunting in a way few visual novels dare to be. Rating: 9/10

Came here looking for your average horror VN and found a gem. Only two things I didn’t like: - Some dialogues are painfully long without advancing the plot. - The “building” of the scenery at the beginning of the story doesn’t make sense at all ( Regarding the parents leaving his child go into a forest for days in order to pursue a killer ).
